  • Experimental determination of the permeability of engineering textiles : Benchmark II
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Composites. Part A, Applied science and manufacturing. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1359-835X .- 1878-5840. ; 61, s. 172-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this second international permeability benchmark, the in-plane permeability values of a carbon fabric were studied by twelve research groups worldwide. One participant also investigated the deformation of the tested carbon fabric. The aim of this work was to obtain comparable results in order to make a step toward standardization of permeability measurements. Unidirectional injections were thus conducted to determine the unsaturated in-plane permeability tensor of the fabric. Procedures used by participants were specified in the guidelines defined for this benchmark. Participants were asked to use the same values for parameters such as fiber volume fraction, injection pressure and fluid viscosity to minimize sources of scatter. The comparison of the results from each participant was encouraging. The scatter between data obtained while respecting the guidelines was below 25%. However, a higher dispersion was observed when some parameters differed from the recommendations of this exercise.

  • Perspectives on the definition of visually lossless quality for mobile and large format displays
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). - 1017-9909 .- 1560-229X. ; 27:5, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in imaging and display engineering have given rise to new and improved image and videoapplications that aim to maximize visual quality under given resource constraints (e.g., power, bandwidth).Because the human visual system is an imperfect sensor, the images/videos can be represented in a mathematicallylossy fashion but with enough fidelity that the losses are visually imperceptible—commonly termed“visually lossless.” Although a great deal of research has focused on gaining a better understanding ofthe limits of human vision when viewing natural images/video, a universally or even largely accepted definitionof visually lossless remains elusive. Differences in testing methodologies, research objectives, and targetapplications have led to multiple ad-hoc definitions that are often difficult to compare to or otherwise employ inother settings. We present a compendium of technical experiments relating to both vision science and visualquality testing that together explore the research and business perspectives of visually lossless image quality,as well as review recent scientific advances. Together, the studies presented in this paper suggest that a singledefinition of visually lossless quality might not be appropriate; rather, a better goal would be to establish varyinglevels of visually lossless quality that can be quantified in terms of the testing paradigm.

  • Formate overflow drives toxic folate trapping in MTHFD1 inhibited cancer cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Metabolism. - : Springer Nature. - 2522-5812. ; 5:4, s. 642-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cancer cells fuel their increased need for nucleotide supply by upregulating one-carbon (1C) metabolism, including the enzymes methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase–cyclohydrolase 1 and 2 (MTHFD1 and MTHFD2). TH9619 is a potent inhibitor of dehydrogenase and cyclohydrolase activities in both MTHFD1 and MTHFD2, and selectively kills cancer cells. Here, we reveal that, in cells, TH9619 targets nuclear MTHFD2 but does not inhibit mitochondrial MTHFD2. Hence, overflow of formate from mitochondria continues in the presence of TH9619. TH9619 inhibits the activity of MTHFD1 occurring downstream of mitochondrial formate release, leading to the accumulation of 10-formyl-tetrahydrofolate, which we term a ‘folate trap’. This results in thymidylate depletion and death of MTHFD2-expressing cancer cells. This previously uncharacterized folate trapping mechanism is exacerbated by physiological hypoxanthine levels that block the de novo purine synthesis pathway, and additionally prevent 10-formyl-tetrahydrofolate consumption for purine synthesis. The folate trapping mechanism described here for TH9619 differs from other MTHFD1/2 inhibitors and antifolates. Thus, our findings uncover an approach to attack cancer and reveal a regulatory mechanism in 1C metabolism.

  • Wettability of acetylated Southern yellow pine
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Wood Products Journal. - 2042-6445 .- 2042-6453. ; 4:3, s. 197-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this work was to achieve a better understanding of the wettability, i.e. liquids wetting and sorption characteristics (or penetrability), of acetylated Southern yellow pine (SYP) including probable differences in such characteristics between early- or latewood. Matched samples of acetylated and untreated SYP boards were prepared. The wettability of the samples were measured by the Wilhelmy technique using standard probe liquids as well as two different sample coatings, a cationic knot sealer and an acrylic based dye. The results showed that latewood regions of the acetylated wood had a noticeably lower uptake of the non-polar low surface tension liquid octane as well as the polar high surface tension liquid water compared with latewood of the untreated controls. Contact angle analysis based on the Lewis acid-base concept indicated that the acetylated wood is predominantly Lewis basic. A preferential wetting of the knot sealer was observed on the acetylated wood.
