  • 10 år med BDD-studien har gett bättre diabetesdiagnos hos barn : Studiens analysbatteri är nu klinisk rutin och kunskapen om olika diabetessjukdomar har ökat

    • The Swedish study Better Diabetes Diagnosis (BDD) has now been ongoing for ten years and detailed information and blood samples have been collected from more than 8000 children and adolescents with newly diagnosed diabetes. We have been able to demonstrate that by means of HLA diabetes antibodies and C-peptide the discrimination between type one and type 2 diabetes is improved. These analyses are therefore included in the clinical check-up for all children and adolescents in Sweden who are diagnosed with diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is by far the most prevalent type of diabetes among Swedish children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is still relatively rare in Sweden but it is urgent to obtain a correct diagnosis as the long-term prognosis depends on a prompt pharmacological treatment. Monogenic diabetes (MODY) is also important to identify early. We therefore recommend that sequencing of MODY genes should be performed if an individual with newly-diagnosed diabetes is auto-antibody negative and has an HLA pattern associated with low risk for type 1 diabetes. However, despite these analytical tools it can be difficult to make the correct diabetes diagnosis initially. It is therefore prudent to re-evaluate the diabetes diagnosis after one year.

  • Folkhälsoskillnaderna består mellan Norrköping och Linköping [Public health differences between »the twin cities« persist].
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - : Sveriges Läkarförbund. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A decade ago, major public health differences between two neighboring, equal sized large Swedish cities, Norrköping and Linköping (»the Twin cities«) were revealed. These differences were considerable for cardiovascular mortality and life expectancy. An important finding was that cardiovascular mortality rates for men and women in the city of Norrköping were highest compared to other major Swedish cities. In this follow-up, a decade later, cardiovascular mortality rates are still highest for the Norrköping population in comparison to the largest Swedish cities. There are also still profound and major public health differences between these twin cities. The differences seem to persist over time. These differences could not be explained by differences in health care, but are rather reflecting different social history and socioeconomic and life style differences in these two cities.

  • Tvillingstäder med stora sociala skillnader i folkhälsa - ett samhällsmedicinskt experiment inleds i Norrköping och Linköping : [Twin cities with big social differences when it comes to public health. A sociomedical "experiment" introduced in Norrkoping and Linkoping]

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An interdisciplinary research group entitled ”Twincities Research Group” has been initiated at Linköping University. The term twin cities refer to the Swedish cities Linköping and Norrköping, neighbours that are nearly equal in size. These two cities, located within a distance of only 40 km, are governed by the same county council and consequently have the same health care structure. However, health is remarkably different in these twin cities. The comparison of public health in these two cities during the development from the industrial to the post-industrial era has a design similar to classical experiments with a control and an experiment group, since the social history and the socio-economic structures of the cities are radically different. Through an interdisciplinary research design including historical, epidemiological and clinical competence we have a unique opportunity to increase our understanding of how social environment may affect public health.
