    • Bedömning av transversella färdigheter i STEM (ATSSTEM) är ett innovativt utveckling- och forskningsprojekt med en experimentell design, som syftar till att förbättra digitala bedömningsformer av elevers kunskaper och ämnesövergripande färdigheter inom STEM [matematik, naturvetenskap och teknik]. Detta Erasmus+ projekt bedrivs i grundskolor och gymnasieskolor runt om i Europa och pågår mellan 2019–2022. Haninge kommun och Institutionen för lärande vid Kungliga Tekniska högskolan deltar i ATSSTEM-partnernätverket tillsammans med 11 andra utbildningsinstitutioner som befinner sig på olika nivåer av utbildningssystemet i åtta europeiska länder. Ämnesövergripande undervisningsupplägg med fokus på Agenda 2030 utvecklas och prövas tillsammans med lärare från skolor runt om i Europa. Från Sverige deltar sju grundskolor i Haninge kommun. Frågeställningar - Hur kommunicerar vi informerat samtycke i en flerspråkig miljö? - Hur kan vi kommunicera med vårdnadshavare på andra språk än svenska om potentiella fördelarna och risker med praktiknära skolforskning för deras barn? - Hur kan vi engagera vårdnadshavare med olika språkbakgrund för att få dem att känna sig del av forskningen och förklara vårdnadshavarnas och elevernas rättigheter och de garantier de kan förvänta sig? - Vilka logistik- och kostnadskrav ställer detta på forskargrupper? - Hur resurssätter vi lärare och forskare att kommunicera med vårdnadshavare i flerspråkiga miljöer med avseende på informerat samtycke? Resultat och diskussion I syfte att säkerställa att vårdnadshavare och elever på pilotskolorna kunde tillgodogöra sig innehållet i samtyckesformuläret beslutade projektgruppen att översätta dokumentet till några av de mest förekommande språken i Haninge engelska, arabiska, polska, ryska och turkiska. Vi vill till detta seminarium bjuda in publiken till en dialog där vi diskuterar och delar erfarenheter i den etiskt utmanande frågan om hur man kommunicerar informerat samtycke i en flerspråkig skolmiljö.

  • Seeking informed consent in a multilingual school environment : ATSSTEM - project

    • Assessment of Transversal Skills in STEM (ATSSTEM) is an innovative policy experimentation project, which aims to enhance digital assessment of students’ transversal skills in STEM. This Erasmus+ project is situated in primary and secondary schools in and run between 2019– 2022. The Department of Education in Haninge municipality and the Department of Learning at KTH Royal Institute of Technology partake in the ATSSTEM partner network together with 11 other educational institutions, operating on different levels of the educational system across 8 European countries. Integrated STEM learning activities focusing Agenda 2030 is developed and piloted together with teachers in 7 primary and secondary schools in Haninge municipality in Sweden. Following regular ethical requirements for educational research projects; the research team seeks informed consent from the students’ guardians as the students involved are underaged. The pilot schools in municipality of Haninge are fortunate to have students from all over the world, and a number of families have recently immigrated to Sweden. STEM education has a strong policy focus at European and national levels on widening opportunities for under-represented groups. With the purpose to emphasis informed, we therefore decided to translate the informed consent form to a number of languages [e.g. Arabic, Spanish and Polish] spoken at home in our pilot schools. We would like to invite audience to discuss and share experience in the ethically challenging matter of communicating informed consent in a multilingual school environment with the following suggested prompts.How can we communicate with parents in other languages (and with different cultural expectations) about the potential benefits of research to their children?How can we engage parents from different backgrounds to make them feel part of research and explain the rights of parents and students and the safeguards they can expect?What logistic and costs requirements does this place on research teams? How do we resource teachers and researchers to communicate with parents in multi-lingual environments?

    • The ability to construct thin films with controlled thickness on almost any type of surface is of great interestin many research fields. For biomedical applications, thin films on medical devices have been found toimprove the biocompatibility, reduce the immunological response, and deliver medical drugs locally. Thelayer structure is closely related to the function and efficiency of such films. During the last decades, it hasbeen shown that the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of charged macromolecules has created an inexpensiveroute to the formation of thin multilayer films, and the interest in using biomacromolecules (e.g., polysaccharidesand proteins) has emerged in recent years. The LbL technique offers unique opportunities forcontrolling the physical properties of thin surface layers, such as film thickness, chemical and elasticproperties, and stability. In this entry, we will focus on recent advances in the multilayer film area usingbiomacromolecules. We will discuss how different physicochemical properties of biomacromolecules andof the deposition solution affect the formation and structure of LbL-assembled multilayer. Finally, we willaddress some suggested applications for these biopolymer film coatings.

  • Adsorption of IgG on/in a PAH/PSS Multilayer Film : Layer Structure and Cell Response

    • The binding of immunogloblulins (IgG) (mouse monoclonal recognizing IFN gamma) on precoated polystyrene or silica surfaces by the layer-by-layer technique has been investigated with QCM-D and DPI. The aim of the work was to increase the sensitivity of the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot (ELISpot) assay. The polyelectrolytes used to build the multilayers were poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) alternately adsorbed from 150 mM NaCl. The multilayer build up is linear and the internal structure of the PAH/PSS multilayer is compact and rigid as observed by low relative water content (20-25%) and high layer refractive index (n similar to 1.5) after the formation of five bilayers. Incorporation of IgG within the PAH/PSS multilayer did not give rise to overcharging and did not affect the linear build up. ELISpot test on PAH/PSS multilayer modified polystyrene wells showed that the cytokine response was significantly smaller than on the regular PVDF backed polystyrene wells. This may be due to the compact and rigid nature of the PAH/PSS multilayer, which does not allow formation of the kind of three dimensional support needed to achieve bioactive IgG binding to the surface. Immunological tests of the polyelectrolyte multilayers in the absence of IgG showed that PSS terminated PAH/PSS multilayer did not induce any cytokine response whereas PAH terminated did, which suggests that PSS totally covers the surface from the cells point of view.

    • Different aspects of bone surgery simulation has been a popular topic in haptics research field. This demonstration paper has two major results: a free and open source software (FOSS) implementation of a well known algorithm for tool-bone interaction force estimation, and an evaluation conducted as part of a suggested User-centered design approach for creation of a surgery simulator targeting Oral Surgery in particular.

    • We are in this position paper presenting the experiences we have from three medical application projects. A user centered design methodology have been applied in order to ground the design in requirements gathered from field studies of professional medical environments. Methods used have been interviews, user observations in the work context and cooperative evaluations of prototypes. With a particular focus on haptic (touch) feedback, we are exploring how novel medical applications can benefit from feedback to more senses than vision and how needs can berevealed and transformed into effective design.

  • Preparing Spatial Haptics for Interaction Design

    • Spatial haptics is a fascinating technology with which users can explore and modify3D computer graphics objects with the sense of touch, but its application potentialis often misunderstood. For a large group of application designers it is still unknown,and those who are aware of it often have either too high expectations of what is technicallyachievable or believe it is too complicated to consider at all. In addition, spatialhaptics is in its current form ill-suited to interaction design. This is partly because theproperties and use qualities cannot be experienced in an application prototype until asystem is fully implemented, which takes too much effort to be practical in most designsettings. In order to find a good match between a solution and a framing of aproblem, the designer needs to be able to mould/shape/form the technology into a solution,but also to re-frame the problem and question initial conceptual designs as shelearns more about what the technology affords. Both of these activities require a goodunderstanding of the design opportunities of this technology.In this thesis I present a new way of working with spatial haptic interaction design.Studying the serially linked mechanism from a well-known haptic device, and a forcereflectingcarving algorithm in particular, I show how to turn these technologies froman esoteric engineering form into a form ready for interaction design. The work isgrounded in a real application: an oral surgery simulator named Kobra that has beendeveloped over the course of seven years within our research group. Its design hasgone through an evolutionary process with iterative design and hundreds of encounterswith the audience; surgeon-teachers as users and potential customers. Some ideas, e.g.gestalting authentic patient cases, have as a result received increased attention by thedesign team, while other ideas, e.g. automatic assessment, have faded away.Simulation is an idea that leads to ideals of realism; that e.g. simulated instrumentsshould behave as in reality, e.g. a simulated dental instrument for prying teeth is expectedto behave according to the laws of physics and give force and torque feedback.If it does not, it is a bad simulation. In the present work it is shown how some of therealism ideal is unnecessary for creating meaningful learning applications and can actuallyeven be counter-productive, since it may limit the exploration of creative designsolutions. This result is a shift in perspective from working towards constantly improvingtechnological components, to finding and making use of the qualities of modern,but not necessarily absolute cutting-edge, haptic technology.To be able to work creatively with a haptic system as a design resource we needto learn its material qualities and how - through changing essential properties - meaningfulexperiential qualities can be modulated and tuned. This requires novel tools andworkflows that enable designers to explore the creative design space, create interactionsketches and tune the design to cater for the user experience. In essence, this thesisshows how one instance of spatial haptics can be turned from an esoteric technologyinto a design material, and how that can be used, and formed, with novel tools throughthe interaction design of a purposeful product in the domain of dental education.

  • Interactions between surfactants and silver nanoparticles of varying charge

    • The interaction between silvernanoparticles (Ag NPs) of different surface charge and surfactants relevant to the laundry cycle has been investigated to understand changes in speciation, both in and during transport from the washing machine. Ag NPs were synthesized to exhibit either a positive or a negative surface charge in solution conditions relevant for the laundry cycle (pH 10 and pH 7). These particles were characterized in terms of size and surface charge and compared to commercially laser ablated Ag NPs. The surfactants included anionic sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (LAS), cationic dodecyltrimethylammoniumchloride (DTAC) and nonionic Berol 266 (Berol). Surfactant–Ag NP interactions were studied by means of dynamic light scattering, Raman spectroscopy, zeta potential, and Quartz Crystal Microbalance. Mixed bilayers of CTAB and LAS were formed through a co-operative adsorption process on positively charged Ag NPs with pre-adsorbed CTAB, resulting in charge reversal from positive to negative zeta potentials. Adsorption of DTAC on negatively charged synthesized Ag NPs and negatively charged commercial Ag NPs resulted in bilayer formation and charge reversal. Weak interactions were observed for nonionic Berol with all Ag NPs via hydrophobic interactions, which resulted in decreased zeta potentials for Berol concentrations above its critical micelle concentration. Differences in particle size were essentially not affected by surfactant adsorption, as the surfactant layer thicknesses did not exceed more than a few nanometers. The surfactant interaction with the Ag NP surface was shown to be reversible, an observation of particular importance for hazard and environmental risk assessments.

    • A methodology using stripping voltammetry has been elaborated to enable sensitive and reliable protein-chromium complexation measurements. Disturbing effects caused by adsorption of proteins on the mercury electrode were addressed. At low concentrations of proteins (< 60-85 nM), chromium-protein complexation measurements were possible. Chromium(VI) complexation was quantitatively determined using differently sized, charged, and structured proteins: serum albumin (human and bovine), lysozyme, and mucin. Generated results showed a strong relation between complexation and protein size, concentration, and the number of amino acids per protein mass. Complexation increased nonlinearly with increasing protein concentrations. The nature of this complexation was based on weak interactions judged from combined results with MALDI-TOF-MS and adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry.
