    • In the digitalized era, we do less and less physical work, which in turn leads to less physical activities. Many different wearables and applications try to motivate us to exercise more but people stop using them after a couple of months. One of the reasons people stop using them is because they serve as a post-activity viewing and not as a motivator. Meanwhile, the gaming industry has spent years of perfecting the art of creating addictive games. One idea is to utilize other technology such as virtual reality (VR) to encourage people to exercise more. VR is a computer-generated world, which tracks users and can give users an illusion of participating in a synthetic environment. This paper aims to introduce a Fitness VR application, which was developed and evaluated. The application contains three exercises and a mindfulness scene, the evaluation focus on how different gamification and interaction techniques can be used to motivate users to exercise more. Initial findings show that the participants find the Fitness VR application fun and motivating.

  • Combining apps targeting professionals and senior citizens to improve housing accessibility and influence housing provision policies.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics. - 0926-9630. - 9781614995654 ; 217, s. 300-305
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two separate apps that address the increasingly important issue of accessible housing for senior citizens have been developed in different project settings. One of the apps was developed to facilitate the process for professional raters to assess housing accessibility in the context of individual housing adaptations. The other app was developed for senior citizens to raise their awareness of possible accessibility problems in their current dwelling and in other apartments within the available housing stock. Both apps were developed with a high degree of active user involvement in processes utilizing multiple state of the art methods. The results are two well accepted prototype apps perceived as user-friendly and appropriate for the intended user groups. By combining these two apps, our ambition is for the professional raters to benefit by gaining knowledge of their clients' perceived needs and desires, and for senior citizens to benefit by getting access to a database of professionally rated dwellings. The ultimate goal is the generation of sound knowledge reflecting the needs and desires of senior citizens and professional requirements regarding accessible housing as a means to inform and influence housing provision policies.

  • The "Free from housing accessibility problems" app
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Universal Design 2016: Learning from the Past, Designing for the Future - Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Universal Design, UD 2016. - 0926-9630 .- 1879-8365. - 9781614996835 ; 229, s. 567-570
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study concerns the development of a computerized tool targeting housing accessibility issues. A user-centered approach involving professionals from the housing sector and senior citizens from four European countries resulted in a fully functional prototype of a mobile application (app) including an apartment database. The app raises awareness on housing accessibility and has the potential to support decision making and strengthen all citizens regardless of functional capacity to be more active in their endeavors for a satisfying housing solution. Further refinements and additional features are needed to enhance the potential benefits; they include addressing potential challenges facing senior citizens, developing interactive features that allow users to provide input and adapting to different national contexts to make the app applicable for the European market.
