    • The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) and relativistic configuration interaction methods are used to provide excitation energies, lifetimes, and radiative transition data for the 604 (699, 702, 704, 704, 704, and 699) lowest levels of the 3s (2)3p (2), 3s3p (3), 3s (2)3p3d, 3p (4), 3s3p (2)3d, 3s (2)3d (2), 3p (3)3d, 3s3p3d (2), 3s3d (3), 3p3d (3), 3p (2)3d (2), 3s (2)3p4s, 3s (2)3p4p, 3s (2)3p4d, 3s (2)3p4f, 3s3p (2)4s, 3s3p (2)4p, 3s3p (2)4d, 3s3p (2)4f, 3s (2)3d4s, 3s (2)3d4p, 3p (3)4s, 3p (3)4p, 3s3p3d4s, 3s (2)3p5s, and 3s (2)3p5p configurations in Cr xi, (Mn xii, Fe xiii, Co xiv, Ni xv, Cu xvi, and Zn xvii). Previous line identifications of Fe xiii and Ni xv in the EUV and X-ray wavelength ranges are reviewed by comprehensively comparing the MCDHF theoretical results with available experimental data. Many recent identifications of Fe xiii and Ni xv lines are confirmed, and several new identifications for these two ions are proposed. A consistent atomic data set with spectroscopic accuracy is provided for the lowest hundreds of levels for Si-like ions of iron-group elements of astrophysical interest, for which experimental values are scarce. The uncertainty estimation method suggested by Kramida, applied to the comparison of the length and velocity line strength values, is used for ranking the transition data. The correlation of the latter with the gauge dependency patterns of the line strengths is investigated.

  • Effect of nonionic and amphoteric surfactants on salivary pellicles reconstituted in vitro

    • Surfactants are important components of oral care products. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is the most common because of its foaming properties, taste and low cost. However, the use of ionic surfactants, especially SDS, is related to several oral mucosa conditions. Thus, there is a high interest in using non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants as they are less irritant. To better understand the performance of these surfactants in oral care products, we investigated their interaction with salivary pellicles i.e., the proteinaceous films that cover surfaces exposed to saliva. Specifically, we focused on pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) as model nonionic and amphoteric surfactants respectively, and investigated their interaction with reconstituted salivary pellicles with various surface techniques: Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation, Ellipsometry, Force Spectroscopy and Neutron Reflectometry. Both C12E5 and CAPB were gentler on pellicles than SDS, removing a lower amount. However, their interaction with pellicles differed. Our work indicates that CAPB would mainly interact with the mucin components of pellicles, leading to collapse and dehydration. In contrast, exposure to C12E5 had a minimal effect on the pellicles, mainly resulting in the replacement/solubilisation of some of the components anchoring pellicles to their substrate.

  • Efficient capture, rapid killing and ultrasensitive detection of bacteria by a nano-decorated multi-functional electrode sensor

    • In this work, we demonstrated a nano-decorated porous impedance electrode sensor for efficient capture, rapid killing and ultrasensitive detection of bacteria. The multi-functional sensor was prepared by a facile sono-chemical method via in situ deposition of antibacterial prickly Zn-CuO nanoparticles and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets on a Ni porous electrode. Due to the surface burr-like nanostructures, the nano-decorated impedance sensor exhibited very good bacterial-capture efficiency (70 - 80% in 20 min) even at a low concentration of 50 CFU mL(-1), rapid antibacterial rate (100% killing in 30 min) and high detection sensitivity (as low as 10 CFU mL(-1)). More importantly, the nano-decorated sensor has proven to be highly effective in quantitative detection of bacteria in a biological sample, for example, a rat blood sample spiked with E. coll. Despite the complexity of blood, the sensor still exhibited excellent detection precision within 30 min at bacteria concentrations ranging from 10 - 10(5) CFU mL(-1). The simplicity, rapidity, sensitivity, practicability and multifunctionality of this impedance sensor would greatly facilitate applications in portable medical devices for on-the-spot diagnosis and even the possibility for simultaneous therapy of diseases caused by bacterial infections.
