  • Roadmap for optical tweezers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics-Photonics. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7647. ; 5:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical tweezers are tools made of light that enable contactless pushing, trapping, and manipulation of objects, ranging from atoms to space light sails. Since the pioneering work by Arthur Ashkin in the 1970s, optical tweezers have evolved into sophisticated instruments and have been employed in a broad range of applications in the life sciences, physics, and engineering. These include accurate force and torque measurement at the femtonewton level, microrheology of complex fluids, single micro- and nano-particle spectroscopy, single-cell analysis, and statistical-physics experiments. This roadmap provides insights into current investigations involving optical forces and optical tweezers from their theoretical foundations to designs and setups. It also offers perspectives for applications to a wide range of research fields, from biophysics to space exploration.

  • Performance of timing resistive plate chambers with relativistic neutrons from 300 to 1500 MeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-0221. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (300 to 1500 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstad, Germany. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm2, is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C2H2F4 and 10% SF6. The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Measurements of the time of flight jitter of neutrons, in the mentioned energy range, point to a contribution of the resistive plate chamber in the order of 150 ps, independent of the neutron energy.

  • PILAR : A Federation of VISIR Remote Laboratory Systems for Educational Open Activities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 2018 IEEE International Conference on Teaching, Assessment, and Learning for Engineering, TALE 2018. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538665220 ; , s. 134-141
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social demands have promoted an educational approach based on an 'anywhere and anytime' premise. Remote laboratories have emerged as the answer to the demands of technical educational areas for adapting themselves to this scenario. The result has not only benefit distance learning students but has provided new learning scenarios both for teachers and students as well as allowing a flexible approach to experimental topics. However, as any other solution for providing practical scenarios (hands-on labs, virtual labs or simulators), remote labs face several constraints inherited from the subsystems of its deployment - hardware (real instruments, equipment and scenario) and software (analog/digital conversions, communications, workbenches, etc.}. This paper describes the Erasmus+ project Platform Integration of Laboratories based on the Architecture of visiR (PILAR) which deals with several units of the federation installed in different educational institutions and devoted to analog electronics and electrical circuits. Based on the limitations of remote labs, the need for the federation will be justified and its benefits will be described by taking advantage of its strengths. The challenges that have come up during the different stages and the different approaches to design are also going to be described and analyzed. © 2018 IEEE.

  • Sustainable bioproducts in Brazil: disputes and agreements on a common ground agenda for agriculture and nature protection
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining. - : Wiley. - 1932-1031 .- 1932-104X. ; 10:3, s. 204-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key question for food, biofuels, and bioproducts production is how agriculture affects the environment, and social and economic development. In Brazil, a large agricultural producer and among the biologically wealthiest of nations, this question is challenging and opinions often clash. The Brazilian parliament and several stakeholders have recently debated the revision of the Forest Act, the most important legal framework for conservation of natural vegetation on Brazilian private agricultural lands. Past decades have shown improvements in the agricultural sector with respect to productivity and efficiency, along with great reductions in deforestation and growth of environmentally certified production. However, the opposing sides in the debate have ignored this progress and instead continue to entrench their respective combative positions. A structured exchange involving nine experts associated with major producer interests (livestock, crops, planted forest, and charcoal) and environmental NGOs was moderated based on a framework that sorted viewpoints into four categories: (i) common ground - compatible interests considered to be high priority for Brazilian sustainable agricultural development; (ii) serving exclusive nature conservation interest; (iii) serving exclusive agricultural production interest; and (iv) mainly serving the purpose of sustaining dispute. We conclude that the majority of actions and expected future trends reflect achievements and ambitions to balance production and conservation, but much public opinion - and in turn decisions in the parliament and government for agriculture and conservation - is shaped by a perceived conflict between these objectives and a debate that has become, at least to some extent, an end in itself.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 8, s. 110073-110081
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart vehicles are emerging as a possible solution for multiple concerns in road traffic, such as mobility and safety. This work presents radio localization methods based on simultaneous direction of arrival (DOA), time-delay, and range estimation using the SAGE algorithm. The proposed methods do not rely on external sources of information, such as global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). The proposed methods take advantage of signals of opportunity and do not require the transmission of location-specific signals; therefore, they do not increase the network load. A set of simulations using synthetic and measured data is provided to validate the proposed methods, and the results show that it is possible to achieve accuracy down to decimeter and centimeter-level. © 2013 IEEE.

  • The effect of ball milling time and rotational speed on ultra high molecular weight polyethylene reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Polymer Composites. - : Wiley. - 0272-8397 .- 1548-0569. ; 37:4, s. 1128-1136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were produced using planetary ball milling. The aim was to develop a more wear resistant composite with increased mechanical properties to be used in stress bearing joints. The manufacturing technique, using ball-milling to incorporate MWCNT into UHMWPE matrix was investigated. The effect of manufacturing parameters such as effect of ball milling time and rotational speed on final composite was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), particle size distribution and contact angle measurements. Ball milling as mixing technique for UHMWPE based composites is not a new approach but yet, the effect of time, rotational speed, loading of milling jar and type of ball mill has not been reported properly for UHMWPE. 0.5 and 1 wt% UHMWPE/MWCNTs were manufactured at different rotational speed and mixing time. The results indicate that rotational speed rather than mixing time is important for dispersing MWCNTs

  • Towards a Unified 5G Broadcast-Broadband Architecture
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Fundamentals of 5G Mobile Networks. - Chichester, UK : Wiley-Blackwell. ; , s. 191-206
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • TV broadcasting and mobile broadband are undoubtedly essential parts of today's society. Both of them are now facing tremendous challenges to cope with the future demands. In the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland and Poland the digital satellite platform is the largest TV platform. However, regardless of whether consumers are using digital satellite or DTT to receive their TV content, neither of these platforms currently meets the needs of a growing non-linear, truly on-demand consumption paradigm. Both satellite and High-Power High-Tower Digital TV (DTV) infrastructure have been designed for a one-to-many architecture with limited scope for feedback channels and user-controlled scheduling, especially in mobile and portable situations. Hybrid approaches including mobile broadband are, however, developing progressively in a large number of countries. TV and mobile broadband have strong similarities in their challenges. Moreover, the recent trend in TV consumption patterns suggests that the TV of the future will be quite similar to the mobile broadband of the coming years in many aspects. Both services have to provide the customer with (ultra-)high quality video in a dynamic and interactive manner. This necessitates an efficient solution for converged broadcast and mobile broadband services. In order to address these challenges, some candidate network architectures for future terrestrial TV distribution have been proposed, including a clean-slate approach (all broadband), hybrid and common converged system. However, it is suggested that substantial further study is required to evaluate the benefit of these architectures and to develop a better solution out of the existing ones. In this chapter, we emphasise the current challenges facing the broadcasting and mobile industries to deliver next generation TV services, and provide an overview of these architectures that could potentially be adopted to provide a 'win-win' Broadcast-Broadband (BC-BB) convergence solution for 5G networks.

  • Simultaneous Crystallization of NaCl and KCl from Aqueous Solution : Elementary Phenomena and Product Characterization
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 18:3, s. 1645-1656
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main elementary processes were identified during simultaneous crystallization of NaCl and KCl from aqueous solutions by the batchwise evaporative method using NaCl seeds. In the early stages of the batch operation, when only NaCl crystallizes, the main elementary processes are molecular crystal growth, agglomeration, and secondary nucleation. When the eutonic condition is exceeded, a KCl primary nucleation event takes place in solution. Subsequently, part of the resulting KCl particles agglomerate with the NaCl particles. Besides, epitaxial growth of KCI upon NaCl crystals takes place. Consequently, the product is comprised of mixed composition polycrystalline particles and single crystals of each salt. The elementary phenomena just described were sensitive to crystallization conditions such as evaporation rate, seed size, and seed content, suggesting the possibility of controlling the morphological features of the particulate product as well as the chemical composition of its size fractions. Such knowledge is important in the context of wastewater treatment, where the particulate product should be suitable either for disposal as a residue or for further processing in easily separable size fractions for exploitation of valuable components.
