  • Transferring biodiversity-ecosystem function research to the management of 'real-world' ecosystems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Mechanisms underlying the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function. - London : Elsevier. - 9780081029121 - 9780081029138 ; , s. 323-356
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) research grew rapidly following concerns that biodiversity loss would negatively affect ecosystem functions and the ecosystem services they underpin. However, despite evidence that biodiversity strongly affects ecosystem functioning, the influence of BEF research upon policy and the management of 'real-world' ecosystems, i.e., semi-natural habitats and agroecosystems, has been limited. Here, we address this issue by classifying BEF research into three clusters based on the degree of human control over species composition and the spatial scale, in terms of grain, of the study, and discussing how the research of each cluster is best suited to inform particular fields of ecosystem management. Research in the first cluster, small-grain highly controlled studies, is best able to provide general insights into mechanisms and to inform the management of species-poor and highly managed systems such as croplands, plantations, and the restoration of heavily degraded ecosystems. Research from the second cluster, small-grain observational studies, and species removal and addition studies, may allow for direct predictions of the impacts of species loss in specific semi-natural ecosystems. Research in the third cluster, large-grain uncontrolled studies, may best inform landscape-scale management and national-scale policy. We discuss barriers to transfer within each cluster and suggest how new research and knowledge exchange mechanisms may overcome these challenges. To meet the potential for BEF research to address global challenges, we recommend transdisciplinary research that goes beyond these current clusters and considers the social-ecological context of the ecosystems in which BEF knowledge is generated. This requires recognizing the social and economic value of biodiversity for ecosystem services at scales, and in units, that matter to land managers and policy makers.

  • Research of the NUSTAR departments : SHE departments and HIM SHE section
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: GSI-FAIR Scientific Report 2019 : An overview of the 2019 achievements in science and technology - An overview of the 2019 achievements in science and technology. ; , s. 53-59
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The SHE departments devoted to the research of superheavy elements, operate the recoil separators SHIP and TASCA and their ancillary installations including SHIPTRAP and a laser spectroscopy setup at SHIP as well as chemistry and nuclear spectroscopy setups at TASCA. In 2019, the activities at GSI focused on the UNILAC beamtime within the FAIR Phase-0 program and on the analysis of data obtained in prior beamtimes. At HIM, the advancement of actinide sample preparation, manipulation, and characterization for various applications was most central. In addition, technical developments, for example for single-ion mass measurements, have been performed.

  • Historical Ecology : using what Works to Cross the Divide
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Atlantic Europe in the First Millennium BC. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780199567959
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • European first millennium BC studies have witnessed an increasing theoretical divide between the approaches adopted across different European countries. Whilst topics such as ethnicity, identity, and agency have dominated many British studies, such themes have had less resonance in continental approaches. At the same time, British and Iberian first millennium BC studies have become increasingly divorced from studies elsewhere in Europe. While such divergence reflects deep historical divisions in theory and methodology between European perspectives, it is an issue that has been largely ignored by scholars of the period. This volume addresses these issues by bringing together 33 papers by leading Bronze Age and Iron Age scholars from France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, North America, and the United Kingdom. Initial chapters from leading specialists introduce major themes (landscape studies, social organisation, historiography, dynamics of change, and identity), providing overviews on the history of approaches to these areas, personal perspectives on current problems, and possible future research directions. Subsequent chapters by key researchers develop these topics, presenting case studies and in-depth discussions of particular issues relating to the first millennium BC in the Atlantic realm of Western Europe. The chapters reflect a diverse range of theoretical approaches, techniques, and methodologies representing a cross section of current research in Western Europe, and an opportunity to compare approaches to the first millennium BC from different national and theoretical perspectives.
