  • Legal Advisors and Family Business Owners : A Transaction Cost Understanding of “the Ownership Contract”
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Family Business Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0894-4865 .- 1741-6248.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Family business owners are dependent on legal advice to control ownership changes and uphold a functional balance between owners. This advice spans both family law and business law. However, family business owners are found to underutilize the legal instruments available, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises. We explore the market for legal advice provided to family business owners. Our findings describe specific ownership costs that decrease owners’ willingness and ability to contract. This avoidance of ex ante costs puts the owners at risk of extensive ex post costs that could ultimately jeopardize the business.

  • Anterior and posterior ERP rhyming effects in 3- to 5-year-old children
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. - : Elsevier. - 1878-9293 .- 1878-9307. ; 30, s. 178-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During early literacy skills development, rhyming is an important indicator of the phonological precursors required for reading. To determine if neural signatures of rhyming are apparent in early childhood, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) from 3- to 5-year-old, preliterate children (N = 62) in an auditory prime-target nonword rhyming paradigm (e.g., bly-gry, blane-vox). Overall, nonrhyming targets elicited a larger negativity (N450) than rhyming targets over posterior regions. In contrast, rhyming targets elicited a larger negativity than nonrhyming targets over fronto-lateral sites. The amplitude of the two rhyming effects was correlated, such that a larger posterior effect occurred with a smaller anterior effect. To determine whether these neural signatures of rhyming related to phonological awareness, we divided the children into two groups based on phonological awareness scores while controlling for age and socioeconomic status. The posterior rhyming effect was stronger and more widely distributed in the group with better phonological awareness, whereas differences between groups for the anterior effect were small and not significant. This pattern of results suggests that the rhyme processes indexed by the anterior effect are developmental precursors to those indexed by the posterior effect. Overall, these findings demonstrate early establishment of distributed neurocognitive networks for rhyme processing.

  • Global conservation outcomes depend on marine protected areas with five key features
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 506:7487, s. 216-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In line with global targets agreed under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the number of marine protected areas (MPAs) is increasing rapidly, yet socio-economic benefits generated by MPAs remain difficult to predict and under debate(1,2). MPAs often fail to reach their full potential as a consequence of factors such as illegal harvesting, regulations that legally allow detrimental harvesting, or emigration of animals outside boundaries because of continuous habitat or inadequate size of reserve(3-5). Here we show that the conservation benefits of 87 MPAs investigated worldwide increase exponentially with the accumulation of five key features: no take, well enforced, old (>10 years), large (>100 km(2)), and isolated by deep water or sand. Using effective MPAs with four or five key features as an unfished standard, comparisons of underwater survey data from effective MPAs with predictions based on survey data from fished coasts indicate that total fish biomass has declined about two-thirds from historical baselines as a result of fishing. Effective MPAs also had twice as many large (>250 mm total length) fish species per transect, five times more large fish biomass, and fourteen times more shark biomass than fished areas. Most (59%) of the MPAs studied had only one or two key features and were not ecologically distinguishable from fished sites. Our results show that global conservation targets based on area alone will not optimize protection of marine biodiversity. More emphasis is needed on better MPA design, durable management and compliance to ensure that MPAs achieve their desired conservation value.

  • A dyadic dance : pain catastrophizing moderates the daily relationships between parent mood and protective responses and child chronic pain
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pain. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0304-3959 .- 1872-6623. ; 161:5, s. 1072-1082
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children's experience of chronic pain is influenced by the psychological and behavioural responses of their parents. However, the majority of research has been cross-sectional, precluding examination of how these dynamic relationships unfold over time. This study used a microlongitudinal design to examine the daily relationships between parent mood and protective responses and child chronic pain. We also examined the moderating roles of child and parent pain catastrophizing to determine how the affective-motivational context may alter the influence of parent factors. Participants included 95 youth with idiopathic chronic pain (M-age = 14.08; 71.6% female) and their parents. At baseline, parents and youth reported on their catastrophic thinking about child pain. For 7 consecutive days, parents completed daily assessments of their mood and protective responses, while youth completed assessments of their pain intensity, unpleasantness, and interference. Multilevel path analyses were conducted. At a daily level, greater parent protectiveness significantly predicted higher youth pain unpleasantness, interference, and intensity; more negative parent mood significantly predicted higher youth pain intensity and unpleasantness. Higher baseline youth pain catastrophizing predicted a stronger daily association between parent mood and youth pain unpleasantness and intensity. Higher baseline parent pain catastrophizing predicted a weaker daily association between parent protectiveness and youth pain interference. Findings suggest that parent mood and protective responses are dynamic, daily predictors of child pain. Findings also underscore the importance of addressing parents' daily mental health and protectiveness, among youth with chronic pain, and suggest different intervention targets depending on levels of child and parent catastrophizing.

  • Mapping and assessing ecosystem services in the EU - Lessons learned from the ESMERALDA approach of integration
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: One Ecosystem. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 2367-8194. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action ESMERALDA aimed at developing guidance and a flexible methodology for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) to support the EU member states in the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy’s Target 2 Action 5. ESMERALDA’s key tasks included network creation, stakeholder engagement, enhancing ecosystem services mapping and assessment methods across various spatial scales and value domains, work in case studies and support of EU member states in MAES implementation. Thus ESMERALDA aimed at integrating various project outcomes around four major strands: i) Networking, ii) Policy, iii) Research and iv) Application. The objective was to provide guidance for integrated ecosystem service mapping and assessment that can be used for sustainable decision-making in policy, business, society, practice and science at EU, national and regional levels. This article presents the overall ESMERALDA approach of integrating the above-mentioned project components and outcomes and provides an overview of how the enhanced methods were applied and how they can be used to support MAES implementation in the EU member states. Experiences with implementing such a large pan-European Coordination and Support Action in the context of EU policy are discussed and recommendations for future actions are given.

  • Crafting the Future of Computing Education in CC2020 : A Workshop
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A consortium of national and international computing and engineering organizations are currently developing a new set of curricular resources titled Computing Curricula 2020 (CC2020). This project, based on its predecessor CC2005, aims to reflect the state-of-the-art in computing education and practice as well as provide insights into the future of the computing educational field for the 2020s and beyond. This workshop provides an overview of the CC2005 and related reports and links them to the transition into the CC2020 project. It also provides participants with a unique opportunity to collaborate with members of the CC2020 task force and contribute to the development of the resources the project will deliver. The workshop authors and participants will engage in activities to help define how Computing is defined within the project and discuss how to extend its influence in global undergraduate computing education for the future. The authors anticipate full audience involvement and participation in formulating this vision.
