- In the Spring of 1968, Herbert Simon gave a series of lectures at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, introducing his idea of a science of the artificial. “The world we live in today is much more a man-made, or artificial, world than it is a natural world,” he began to say, but modern science is a science of nature. “Natural science is knowledge about natural objects and phenomena. We ask whether there cannot also be “artificial” science–knowledge about artificial objects and phenomena.” He then set out to sketch a program for a general science of the artificial, defining it as a science of design: While the natural sciences are interested in how things are, the sciences of the artificial are concerned with how things might be–with design.The lectures were published in a book, The Sciences of the Artificial (MIT Press 1969), which became widely read, much admired and discussed. But readers were intrigued by the details, not by the general program. The idea of a science of the artificial simply never caught on. Simon made occasional attempts to revive it, but without the idea receiving any real attention.In 1993 we decided to try to correct this and launched a small project, sponsored by the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research, to advance the idea of a science of the artificial, beyond Simon’s original program. This book is a first contribution in this direction. In three essays, we discuss the idea of an artificial science, the more general issue of the nature of artifacts and our artificial world, and finally, the particular example of history as an artificial science. Some of these ideas were presented already in December 1994, at a seminar in Stockholm organized by the Council. We are grateful to the Council for its support and to the participants at the seminar for comments, criticism, and ideas.

- Med systemering menar vi utveckling av datorbaserade informationssystem för en verksamhet. Systemering är en process där man utifrån en idé successivt arbetar sig fram till ett färdigt datasystem. Vid systemering är det nödvändigt att arbeta enligt en metod.I denna bok presenterar vi en konkret metod för systemering. En väsentlig del av metoden är att beskriva verksamheter med hjälp av V-grafer (verksamhetsgrafer). Med ett datorstöd kan man skapa V-grafer enklare, säkrare och snabbare. Vi presenterar därför ett praktiskt datorstöd, GraphDoc, som är ett kraftfullt hjälpmedel vid systemering.Vi ser metod, datorstöd och utbildning som tre ledstjärnor för effektivare systemering. Syftet med vår bok är att knyta samman dessa delar till en helhet. Boken ska fungera som en uppslagsbok för metoden, en manual för datorstödet och en lärobok för utbildningsändamål. Det är första gången som ett sådant försök genomförs inom detta område.Till boken finns framtagen en Lärarhandledning "Systemering med datorstöd - En introduktion till verksamhetsbeskrivning", Esselte Studium, Stockholm.Boken finns översatt och utgiven på både norska och holländska

Polar mesosphere winter echoes by ESRAD, EISCAT and lidar

- The ESRAD 52 MHz MST radar (67° 53 ‘ N, 21 ° 06 ‘ E) has observed thin layers of enhanced radar echoes in the winter mesosphere during several recent solar proton events. The detection of these polar mesosphere winter echoes (PMWE) is generally found to correlates well with low values of λ (the ratio of negative ion density to electron density). However PMWE are found to persist for values of λ up to ~100. Present knowledge of the nature of neutral turbulence in the winter mesosphere suggests that such turbulence cannot generate electron density fluctuations with scale-sizes as short as the 3 m needed to produce radar echoes at 52 MHz. This is particularly true as λ increases to ~100. Joint observations from ESRAD and the EISCAT 224 MHz radar suggest that PMWE is also detectable at 67 cm scale-sizes, further increasing the difficulty in explaining the echoes by neutral turbulence. Joint observations from ESRAD and lidar are also inconsistent with the expected behaviour of turbulence. Together with results concerning the thickness, echo aspect-sensitivity and echo spectral-width of the PMWE, these observation leads to the conclusion that the layers cannot be explained by turbulence alone. A role for charged aerosols in creating PMWE is proposed. The presence of aerosols is supported by the lidar observations.

- Huvudbok och fristående Appendix med Checklistor och Kravlistor för inköp av programvara.Att köpa programvara kan ses som ett utmärkt tillfälle att utveckla företaget och därmed stärka dess affärsverksamhet. Val av rätt programvara blir därmed en fråga av stor strategisk betydelse. De nya programvaror som nu finns på marknaden kan ge stora fördelar åt den som kan utnyttja deras möjligheter.Vid köp av progrmavaror måste kundföretagets behov alltid stå i centrum. Att lära känna den egna verksamhetens behov är en viktig förutsättning för val av rätt programvara. Skriften "Välj rätt programvara" lär ut en enkel metod och ger med hjälp av bl.a. check- och kravlistor, konkret hjälp till att analysera den egna verksamhetens behov. Utifrån denna behovsanalys och med hjälp kravlistorna kan kunden undersöka marknaden och därmed lättare värdera de olika leverantörernas produkter. På detta sätt får kunden en inköpsguide till den "djungel" av programvaror som finns på marknaden.Styrelsen för Teknisk Utveckling (STU) har medverkat till att ta fram denna praktiskt orienterade bok som gör det enklare att välja rätt programvara.
