- Den här skriften handlar om ljus och ljusets betydelse för oss människor. Tolv forskare med vitt skilda bakgrunder samlas och diskuterar frågor som skrider över gränserna. Vad är ljus egentligen? Hur kan vi förstå ljus? Hur påverkar det oss? På vilket sätt kan vi använda oss av det? Vilka tekniska möjligheter har vi att skapa och styra olika sorters ljus? Vilka möjligheter ger det oss inför framtiden? I centrum för dialogen står samarbete och nytänkande. Här ges en inblick i perspektiv på ljus från områden som biologi, teknik, material, fysik, estetik, filosofi, medicin och psykologi, vilka sammantaget, på ett åskådligt och lättbegripligt sätt, presenterar den flervetenskapliga ljusrelaterade kompetensen i Lund. Gruppen av experter hoppas att de frågor som ställs och de svar som ges i den här skriften ska inspirera och leda vidare inom fältet ljusforskning. Tillsammans med Pufendorfinstitutet, genom vilket expertgruppens initiativ getts möjlighet att växa och utvecklas, vill de med andra ord att sätta ljuset på...just ”ljuset”!

- Rapid urbanisation is one of today’s biggest global challenges. Nordic Sustainable Cities is a flagship project under the Nordic Prime Ministers’ initiative Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges that seeks to shed light on this challenge from a Nordic perspective.The White Paper on Nordic Sustainable Cities develops a narrative to describe the “Nordic Sustainable City”. It forms a basis for the knowledge sharing effort that will be carried out by Nordic Innovation, Nordregio’s sister institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2018. This work aims to export Nordic stories as a means of branding the Nordic Region and contributing to global efforts towards urban sustainability.

- Annoyance research typically focuses on single sources and on adverse effects of noise. In contrast, soundscape research focuses on the total sound environment, including all its positive and negative aspects. A major challenge in soundscape research is to develop methods for measuring the perceived soundscape. In the research program “Soundscape Support to Health”, we have developed new methods for this purpose, including listening tests in the laboratory, listening walks in the field and questionnaire studies targeted on the soundscape. We have thus identified major perpetual dimensions of soundscapes (pleasantness and eventfulness), linked these features to important acoustical and informational properties of soundscapes (type of sources), and explored the effect of noise mitigation on soundscape perception. Our research show (a) that pleasantness of soundscapes is related to the presence of natural sounds, whereas eventfulness is related to the presence of sounds from humans, (b) that traffic noise should be reduced to below 50 dBA, in order to have a chance to create good outdoor soundscapes in urban residential and recreational areas, and (c) that mitigation efficiency in sound level of various barriers and facades may overestimate corresponding perceptual mitigation efficiency. Based on these findings, new tools for ‘green labelling’ of soundscapes are being developed.
