  • Surgical Morbidity and Mortality From the Multicenter Randomized Controlled NeoRes II Trial : Standard Versus Prolonged Time to Surgery After Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy for Esophageal Cancer.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Surgery. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0003-4932 .- 1528-1140. ; 272:5, s. 684-689
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate if prolonged TTS after completed nCRT improves postoperative outcomes for esophageal and esophagogastric junction cancer.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: TTS has traditionally been 4-6 weeks after completed nCRT. However, the optimal timing is not known.METHODS: A multicenter clinical trial was performed with randomized allocation of TTS of 4-6 or 10-12 weeks. The primary endpoint of this sub-study was overall postoperative complications defined as Clavien-Dindo grade II-V. Secondary endpoints included complication severity according to Clavien-Dindo grade IIIb-V, postoperative 90-day mortality, and length of hospital stay. The study was registered in Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02415101).RESULTS: In total 249 patients were randomized. There were no significant differences between standard TTS and prolonged TTS with regard to overall incidence of complications Clavien-Dindo grade II-V (63.2% vs 72.6%, P = 0.134) or regarding Clavien-Dindo grade IIIb-V complications (31.6% vs 34.9%, P = 0.603). There were no statistically significant differences between standard and prolonged TTS regarding anastomotic leak (P = 0.596), conduit necrosis (P = 0.524), chyle leak (P = 0.427), pneumonia (P = 0.548), and respiratory failure (P = 0.723). In the standard TTS arm 5 patients (4.3%) died within 90 days of surgery, compared to 4 patients (3.8%) in the prolonged TTS arm (P = 1.0). Median length of hospital stay was 15 days in the standard TTS arm and 17 days in the prolonged TTS arm (P = 0.234).CONCLUSION: The timing of surgery after completed nCRT for carcinoma of the esophagus or esophagogastric junction, is not of major importance with regard to short-term postoperative outcomes.

  • SPE and HPLC/UV of resin acids in colophonium-containing products.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of separation science. - Weinheim, Fed. Rep. of Germany : Wiley. - 1615-9314 .- 1615-9306. ; 31:15, s. 2784-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method, involving SPE and HPLC/UV diode-array detection (DAD), was developed for the quantification of colophonium components in different consumer products, such as cosmetics. Colophonium is a common cause of contact dermatitis since its components can oxidize into allergens on exposure to air. Three different resin acids were used as markers for native and oxidized colophonium, abietic acid (AbA), dehydroabietic acid (DeA), and 7-oxodehydroabietic acid (7-O-DeA). The SPE method, utilizing a mixed-mode hydrophobic and anion exchange retention mechanism, was shown to yield very clean extracts. The use of a urea-embedded C(12) HPLC stationary phase improved the separation of the resin acids compared to common C(18). Concentrations higher than 2 mg/g of both AbA and DeA were detected in wax strips. In this product also 7-O-DeA, a marker for oxidized colophonium, was detected at a level of 28 microg/g. The LODs were in the range of 7-19 microg/g and the LOQs 22-56 microg/g. The method is simple to use and can be applied on many types of technical products, not only cosmetics. For the first time, a method for technical products was developed, which separates AbA from pimaric acid.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - Stockholm : Sveriges läkarförbund. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 92:12, s. 1213-1214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Skönlitteraturen i historievetenskapen : några metodologiska reflektioner [Methodological reflections on fiction in historical research]
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - Stockholm : Svenska historiska föreningen. - 0345-469X .- 2002-4827. ; 133:3, s. 384-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can novels and short stories be used in historical research? There seems to be three different approaches to the relationship between fiction and so- ciety among Swedish historians today: Fiction as reflection of society, fiction as action that influences society and fiction as dialogue between text and society. The main advantage of using literary sources is that they can contribute to a deeper understanding of social phenomena. This is because novels and short stories are often biased, subjective and fictitious. Although the selec- tion of appropriate novels and short stories for use in historical research raises questions of representativeness, similar methodological problems are part of all historical research. In general, it probably seems more proper to historians to choose realistic fiction that describes the contemporary society of the novelist, but this is not an absolute rule. Historians should not view the research methods employed to analyze fiction as particularly unique. Common historical approaches such as comparisons, argument analysis, discourse analysis of ideas, constructions and representations etc. can be ap- plied to novels and short stories as well as to other types of written sources. In three readings of the same short story, ‘Tvifvel’ by Anne Charlotte Lef- fler, we provide three examples, based on different research interests, of how historians can analyze a fictional text. These examples also demonstrate dif- ferent methodological approaches. One reading takes individual words and their meanings and connotations as a starting point. Another emphasizes dialogue in order to scrutinize the fictional characters’ views and positions. A third reading focuses on key episodes in the story. As these readings show, fiction can be valuable in historical research by complicating, refining, and qualifying our understanding of the past.

  • Speciation of heavy metals in road runoff and roadside total deposition
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Water, Air and Soil Pollution. - 0049-6979 .- 1573-2932. ; 147:1-4, s. 343-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, W and Zn were measured in road runoff and total deposition at two Swedish field sites during one year. It was found that the concentrations of most elements increased significantly during the winter, up to one order of magnitude. For cobalt and tungsten, it was found that around 90% of the total mass transport occurred during the winter, whereas for Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn and Na, the corresponding figures were 70–90, 40–80, 60–90, 50–70 and >99% depending on site specific conditions. The deicing salts (rock salts) did not significantly contribute to the increase in trace element concentrations. Instead, the increased concentrations were due to more intense wearing of the pavement during the winter because of the use of studded tires in combination with the chemical effects caused by the use of deicing salts. New potential elemental markers for roads and traffic are suggested.

  • Influence of ethyl acetate production and ploidy on the anti-mould activity of Pichia anomala
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: FEMS Microbiology Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0378-1097 .- 1574-6968. ; 238:1, s. 133-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A diploid and a haploid strain of Pichia anomala were tested for their biocontrol ability against the spoilage mould Penicillium roqueforti in glass tubes filled with grain at two water activities (a(w)). At a(w) 0.98, the two yeast strains grew and inhibited mould growth equally well and showed similar patterns of ethyl acetate production, reaching maximum values of 10-14 mug ml(-1) headspace. At a(w) 0.95, both growth and biocontrol performance of the haploid strain were reduced. Ethyl acetate formation was also substantially reduced, with maximum headspace concentrations of 4 mug ml(-1). We conclude that ethyl acetate is a major component of the anti-mould activity. The inhibitory effect of ethyl acetate was confirmed in a bioassay where the pure compound reduced biomass production of P. roqueforti.
