  • A web based tool for storing and visualising data generated within a smart home
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annual international conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2011. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424441211 - 9781424441228 ; , s. 5303-5306
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing need to re-assess the current approaches available to researchers for storing and managing heterogeneous data generated within a smart home environment. In our current work we have developed the homeML Application; a web based tool to support researchers engaged in the area of smart home research as they perform experiments. Within this paper the homeML Application is presented which includes the fundamental components of the homeML Repository and the homeML Toolkit. Results from a usability study conducted by 10 computer science researchers are presented; the initial results of which have been positive

  • An approach for the creation of accessible and shared datasets
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence. - New York : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783642353765 ; , s. 224-232
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the change in global demographics, a significant amount of research is being directed towards developing solutions to monitor and support the ageing as they perform activities of daily living. Research in this area is, however, being limited by the lack of shareable datasets available to support the development and evaluation of data driven activity recognition models. In our current work we have developed a suite of resources in an attempt to establish an openly available data repository where all datasets share a common format for the purposes of data storage. Within this paper the homeML Toolkit and the homeML Repository are presented. Results from a usability study of interactions with the toolkit, conducted by five computer science researchers are presented; the initial findings of which have been encouraging

  • homeRuleML Version 2.1 : a revised and extended version of the homeRuleML concept
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: XIII Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing 2013. - Wien : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783319008455 - 9783319008462 ; , s. 1262-1265
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a direct result of the changes in global demographics, a significant amount of research has been undertaken in the area of home based support and healthcare provision, particularly in the direction of smart home environments. When applied to data generated within a smart home environment, decision support rules have the potential to recognise an inhabitant’s behaviour and provide suitable support and assistance when required. homeRuleML is an XML-based format for the storage and exchange of decision support rules generated within smart home environments. In our current work we have extended upon the concepts of homeRuleML and have subsequently developed an improved format. The evolution of homeRuleML from version 1.0 to version 2.1 has been documented within this paper.

  • Usability of a new electronic assistive device for community-dwelling persons with mild dementia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 16:5, s. 584-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To evaluate a newly developed integrated digital prosthetic, the COGKNOW Day Navigator (CDN), to support persons with mild dementia in their daily lives, with memory, social contacts, daily activities and safety. Methods: A user participatory method was applied in the development process, which consisted of three iterative 1-year cycles with field tests in Amsterdam, Belfast and Luleå. In the successive cycles 16, 14 and 12 persons with dementia and their carers participated. Data on usability were collected by means of interviews, observations, questionnaires, logging and diaries. The CDN prototype consists of a touch screen, a mobile device, sensors and actuators. Results: The evaluation showed that persons with dementia and carers valued the CDN overall as user-friendly and useful. Conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the system in daily life were limited due to insufficient duration of the testing period caused by delays in development and some instability of the final prototype. Conclusion: With the suggested adaptations, the CDN is expected to be a useful tool for supporting communitydwelling persons with mild dementia and their carers.

  • COGKNOW : helping people with mild dementia navigate their day
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dementia is a progressive, chronic disease affecting 5% of all persons above 65 and over 40% of people over 90. The aim of the COGKNOW project is to achieve a breakthrough with research that addresses the needs of those with dementia, particularly those with mild dementia living in the community. This entails cognitive reinforcement in four main areas: helping people to remember, helping to maintain social contact, helping with performing daily life and recreational activities and finally enhance feelings of safety. Based on a sound foundation of needs reported in dementia literature, workshops and individual interviews have been carried out with dementia sufferers and their carers in three European countries. A ranked analysis of information from workshops and interviews, and the state of the art of successful ICT solutions will be the basis for formulating the functionalities of the technical solution and for the development of a cognitive prosthetic device with associated services for people with mild dementia. The research and evaluation will be conducted from human factors, technology, and business perspectives in three phases of one year each. In this paper we discuss the design of the COGKNOW project, the first results of the user needs inquiry workshops and the ICT solutions the COGKNOW project will focus on in the first year.
