- Until recently, the cognitive and neural mechanisms of age-related changes in cognition were usually studied independently of each other.On one hand, studies in the domain of cognitive psychology of aging investigated the effects of aging on behavioral measures of cognition and characterized a variety of age-related deficits in memory, attention, and the like. On the other hand, studies in the domain of neuroscience of aging investigated the effects of aging on the anatomy and physiology of the brain and described forms of age-related neural decline, such as cerebral atrophy and synaptic loss. Although it is reasonable to assume that cognitive aging is largely a consequence of cerebral aging, the relationships between these two phenomena are still largely unknown. Fortunately, this void is being rapidly resolved by studies focusing on the relationships between the effects of aging on the cognition and on the brain. This group of studies constitutes the new discipline of cognitive neuroscience of aging (CNA). Although CNA has a long past, only lately has it achieved the critical mass to be considered an autonomous discipline. The main goal of this book is to provide an introduction to this exciting new field.

- Monasteries were important cultural centers in the Middle Ages. In monasteries, classical authors were copied and studied, new music and new sermons were composed, and new standards from abroad were introduced and spread throughout an ever larger Europe. Monks and nuns created European networks, connecting them to individuals with whom they shared particular interests in theology and learning, but they also had a keen eye for the importance of cultivating connections to local magnates and kings. In the long 13th century, new orders like the mendicants emerged, and monastic life as a whole flourished. Sustained experimentation, the adaptation of new intellectual inspirations, and the adjustment of organizational structures were major characteristics of this life. There was a balance between contemplating the transcendent and securing the material foundation that allowed the individual monk or nun to disappear into the Divine. Monastic communities were powerful centers for innovation that decisively influenced secular life and shaped European history. The contributions in this festschrift are offered in honor of Professor Brian Patrick McGuire, a recognized authority on the Cistercians, and in acknowledgment of his significant contribution to the study of European monastic culture.

- This book is a commemorative publication, with annotated, posthumously published material, in honor of Professor Bo Gustafsson on the 80th anniversary of his birth. Gustafsson was a professor at the Department of Economic History 1977−2000 at Uppsala University and one of the discipline’s most prominent figures during the late 20th century. The title “Research and Politics” refers to his political and publishing activity in 1960's and the 70’s left-wing movement and to his academic legacy up to the time of his death. His life and work are presented initially in an essay by Lars Magnusson, and thereafter for the first time Bo Gustafsson’s unfinished autobiography is published. The bulk of the book, however, is made up of his posthumously published essay, “The Transition from Domestic Industries to Factories” on the emergence of mechanized cotton spinning in the 18th century. It is a weighty contribution to the debate on the origins of the factory system in England and is presented in an introduction by Klas Nyberg. Finally Bo Gustafsson’s bibliography, compiled by Larisa Oldireva Gustafsson, is published.
