  • Linking service design to value creation and service research
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Service Management. - 1757-5818 .- 1757-5826. ; 27:1, s. 21-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for understanding service design and how service design relates to central concepts within service marketing. Design/methodology/approach - For companies, service design is growing in importance and has become a crucial capability to survive in the service-dominant economy. Service design increases the capacity to improve not only service experiences but also organizational design. On this premise, the authors propose a conceptual framework. Findings - By relating service design to research efforts within service marketing, dual value creation can be enhanced. As such, the conceptual framework portrays service design as an enhancer of customer experience and organizational performance. Originality/value - To the authors knowledge, service design has not been discussed in the service marketing literature. Thus, this is the first attempt to see service design in light of well-established service marketing models such as SERVQUAL and an updated version of the Service-profit-chain.

  • Lysine demethylase inhibition protects pancreatic β cells from apoptosis and improves β-cell function
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0303-7207. ; 460, s. 47-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transcriptional changes control β-cell survival in response to inflammatory stress. Posttranslational modifications of histone and non-histone transcriptional regulators activate or repress gene transcription, but the link to cell-fate signaling is unclear. Inhibition of lysine deacetylases (KDACs) protects β cells from cytokine-induced apoptosis and reduces type 1 diabetes incidence in animals. We hypothesized that also lysine demethylases (KDMs) regulate β-cell fate in response to inflammatory stress.Expression of the demethylase Kdm6B was upregulated by proinflammatory cytokines suggesting a possible role in inflammation-induced β-cell destruction. Inhibition of KDM6 demethylases using the selective inhibitor GSK-J4 protected insulin-producing cells and human and mouse islets from cytokine-induced apoptosis by blunting nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response gene expression. GSK-J4 furthermore increased expression of insulin gene and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Expression of genes regulating purinergic and cytokine ligand-receptor interactions was downregulated following GSK-J4 exposure, while expression of genes involved in cell maintenance and survival was upregulated. These data suggest that KDMs are important regulators of inflammation-induced β-cell dysfunction and death.

  • Affective Computing in Marketing : Practical Implications and Research Opportunities Afforded by Emotionally Intelligent Machines
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Marketing letters. - : Springer. - 0923-0645 .- 1573-059X. ; 33, s. 163-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After years of using AI to perform cognitive tasks, marketing practitioners can now use it to perform tasks that require emotional intelligence. This advancement is made possible by the rise of affective computing, which develops AI and machines capable of detecting and responding to human emotions. From market research, to customer service, to product innovation, the practice of marketing will likely be transformed by the rise of affective computing, as preliminary evidence from the field suggests. In this Idea Corner, we discuss this transformation and identify the research opportunities that it offers.

  • Emotional arousal in customer experience : A dynamic view
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Customer emotion in services has been extensively studied, but prior research has overlooked the dynamics of emotion over time. Our research addresses this gap by studying how emotional arousal varies throughout a service encounter. Drawing from the psychology literature, we identify certain features (or patterns) that characterize how arousal varies throughout a service encounter and predict how they may affect customer approach response (e.g., spending, unplanned purchases). We explore the effect of these features in field studies in two stores using a psychophysiological measure (electrodermal activity) to capture arousal over time. We find that (1) the highest arousal level reached during the encounter and (2) the skewness of the distribution of arousal levels (i.e., the frequency of lower arousal levels relative to higher ones) predict customer approach response. This paper opens new avenues for understanding customers from an emotional perspective, which can improve the customer experience in service encounters.

  • The use of electrodermal activity (EDA) measurement to understand consumer emotions : A literature review and a call for action
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - New York, USA : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 104, s. 146-160
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a psychophysiological indicator of emotional arousal. EDA measurement was first employed in consumer research in 1979 but has been scarcely used since. In the past decade, the ease of access to EDA recording equipment made EDA measurement more frequent in studies of consumer emotions. Additionally, recent calls to include physiological data in consumer studies have been voiced, which in turn is increasing the interest in EDA. Such a growing interest calls for assessing why and how EDA measurement has been used and should be used in consumer research. To this end, we undertook a critical review of studies of consumer emotions that employed EDA measurement. We found that most of these studies did not sufficiently report how they recorded and analyzed EDA data, which in turn impeded the replication of the findings. We therefore make recommendations derived from the psychophysiology literature to help consumer researchers get meaningful insights from EDA measurements. Finally, we call on researchers to be more transparent when reporting how they recorded and analyzed EDA data.

  • Grey seal Halichoerus grypus recolonisation of the southern Baltic Sea, Danish Straits and Kattegat
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Wildlife Biology. - : Wiley. - 0909-6396 .- 1903-220X. ; :4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grey seal became locally extinct in the southern Baltic Sea, Danish Straits and Kattegat in the early 1900s after prolonged culling campaigns. Here, we combine national monitoring and anecdotal data from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Poland to report on the grey seal's recolonisation of those areas and the initial reestablishment of breeding colonies. Grey seal occurrence has steadily increased since year 2003 as evidenced by the coordinated Baltic Sea moult censuses. At the first census in 2003, there were 146 grey seals along the southern Baltic coasts of Sweden and Denmark, ca 1% of the total Baltic Sea population count. Since 2015, this has increased to 2000–2600 grey seals, or ca 7% of the total population count. Since the local extinction, there have been sporadic breeding events in the 1940s on sea ice around Bornholm and in the 1980s and 1990s on haul-outs in Kattegat. In 2003, the first two pups in the southern Baltic Sea were recorded at Rødsand, Denmark. This is to date the only site in the southern Baltic Sea with regular annual pupping since the recolonisation. Since 2000, there have also been sporadic breeding events in Danish Kattegat, southern Sweden, Poland and Germany. At Rødsand, there have been at least 3–10 pups recorded every year since initiation of monitoring in 2011, with an increasing tendency until 2017 with 10 pups counted, which subsequently decreased to 5–6 pups annually in 2018–2020. Compared to recolonising events in the Atlantic, the numbers of pups are low. This may be caused by differences in population dynamics, recolonisation distances, habitat and mortality and effects of rehabilitation programmes. It is likely that the breeding distribution will spread throughout the southern Baltic, Danish Straits and Kattegat if appropriate protection measures of seals and haul-outs are installed.

  • Gestational diabetes and maternal obesity are associated with epigenome-wide methylation changes in children
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: JCI Insight. - : American Society for Clinical Investigation. - 2379-3708. ; 3:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Offspring of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at increased risk of developing metabolic disease, potentially mediated by epigenetic mechanisms. We recruited 608 GDM and 626 control offspring from the Danish National Birth Cohort, aged between 9 and 16 years. DNA methylation profiles were measured in peripheral blood of 93 GDM offspring and 95 controls using the Illumina HumanMethylation450 BeadChip. Pyrosequencing was performed for validation/replication of putative GDM-associated, differentially methylated CpGs in additional 905 offspring (462 GDM, 444 control offspring). We identified 76 differentially methylated CpGs in GDM offspring compared with controls in the discovery cohort (FDR, P < 0.05). Adjusting for offspring BMI did not affect the association between methylation levels and GDM status for any of the 76 CpGs. Most of these epigenetic changes were due to confounding by maternal prepregnancy BMI; however, 13 methylation changes were independently associated with maternal GDM. Three prepregnancy BMI-associated CpGs (cg00992687 and cg09452568 of ESM1 and cg14328641 of MS4A3) were validated in the replication cohort, while cg09109411 (PDE6A) was found to be associated with GDM status. The identified methylation changes may reflect developmental programming of organ disease mechanisms and/or may serve as disease biomarkers.

  • Neurologic disorders in 4858 survivors of central nervous system tumors in childhood-an Adult Life after Childhood Cancer in Scandinavia (ALiCCS) study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1523-5866 .- 1522-8517. ; 21:1, s. 125-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A comprehensive overview of neurologic complications among survivors of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in childhood is lacking. We aimed to investigate the risk for these disorders in a large, population-based study with outcome measures from nationwide hospital registries. Methods: We identified 4858 five-year survivors with diagnoses of CNS tumor in childhood in Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden in 1943-2007, and 166658 matched population comparison subjects. Inpatient discharge diagnoses of neurologic disorders were used to calculate relative risks (RRs) and absolute excess risks (AERs). Results: A neurologic disorder was verified in 1309 survivors, while 92.4 were expected, yielding an overall RR of 14.2 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 13.3-15.1) and an AER of 20 hospitalizations per 1000 persons per year. The risks remained increased more than 20 years after diagnosis (RR: 6.3, 95% CI: 5.6-7.2; AER: 11, 9-12). The most frequent diagnoses were epilepsy (affecting 14.1% of all survivors) followed by hydrocephalus (9.5%) and paralytic syndromes (4.2%), with RRs of 28.7 (95% CI: 26.0-31.6), 243 (95% CI: 190-311), and 40.3 (95% CI: 33.1-49.2), respectively. Of these outcomes, 30%-40% were diagnosed prior to or synchronously with the CNS tumor. The survivors had highly increased RRs for infectious diseases of the CNS, disorders of cranial nerves, and degenerative diseases of the nervous system. Conclusions: Survivors of childhood CNS tumors are at markedly increased risk for neurologic disorders throughout their lives. Health care professionals must be aware of survivors who might benefit from preventive interventions and intensive follow-up.
