  • Secretory Phospholipase A(2)-IIA and Cardiovascular Disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American College of Cardiology. - : Elsevier. - 0735-1097 .- 1558-3597. ; 62:21, s. 1966-1976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives This study sought to investigate the role of secretory phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2))-IIA in cardiovascular disease. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanBackground Higher circulating levels of sPLA(2)-IIA mass or sPLA(2) enzyme activity have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. However, it is not clear if this association is causal. A recent phase III clinical trial of an sPLA(2) inhibitor (varespladib) was stopped prematurely for lack of efficacy. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods We conducted a Mendelian randomization meta-analysis of 19 general population studies (8,021 incident, 7,513 prevalent major vascular events [MVE] in 74,683 individuals) and 10 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) cohorts (2,520 recurrent MVE in 18,355 individuals) using rs11573156, a variant in PLA2G2A encoding the sPLA(2)-IIA isoenzyme, as an instrumental variable. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults PLA2G2A rs11573156 C allele associated with lower circulating sPLA(2)-IIA mass (38% to 44%) and sPLA(2) enzyme activity (3% to 23%) per C allele. The odds ratio (OR) for MVE per rs11573156 C allele was 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98 to 1.06) in general populations and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.90 to 1.03) in ACS cohorts. In the general population studies, the OR derived from the genetic instrumental variable analysis for MVE for a 1-log unit lower sPLA(2)-IIA mass was 1.04 (95% CI: 0.96 to 1.13), and differed from the non-genetic observational estimate (OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.61 to 0.79). In the ACS cohorts, both the genetic instrumental variable and observational ORs showed a null association with MVE. Instrumental variable analysis failed to show associations between sPLA2 enzyme activity and MVE. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions Reducing sPLA(2)-IIA mass is unlikely to be a useful therapeutic goal for preventing cardiovascular events.

  • Social and moral psychology of COVID-19 across 69 countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2052-4463. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

  • National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Portfolio. - 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic. Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

  • Plasma CD93 concentration is a potential novel biomarker for coronary artery disease
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 270:3, s. 229-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives. A common nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the CD93 gene (rs3746731, Pro541Ser) has been associated with risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). CD93 is a transmembrane glycoprotein, which is detectable in soluble form in human plasma. We investigated whether the concentration of soluble CD93 in plasma is related to risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and CAD, using a case-control study of premature MI (n = 764) and a nested case-control analysis of a longitudinal cohort study of 60-year-old subjects (analysis comprising 844 of 4232 subjects enrolled at baseline). In addition, SNPs in the CD93 gene were studied in relation to plasma CD93 concentration and CD93 mRNA expression. Methods and Results. A sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was established for determination of the plasma CD93 concentration. Subjects were divided into three groups according to tertiles of the distribution of CD93 concentration. Lower odds ratios for risk of MI and incidence of CAD were observed in the middle CD93 tertile (142-173 mu g L(-1)): odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 0.69 (0.49-0.97) and 0.61 (0.40-0.94), respectively. These associations were independent of traditional CAD risk factors. The minor allele of a SNP in the 3' untranslated region of CD93(rs2749812) was associated with increased plasma CD93 concentrations (P = 0.03) and increased CD93 mRNA expression levels (P = 0.02). Conclusion. The results of the present study suggest that the concentration of soluble CD93 in plasma is a potential novel biomarker for CAD, including MI.

  • The Multi-Blade Boron-10-based neutron detector performance using a focusing reflectometer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 15:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Multi-Blade is a Boron-10-based neutron detector designed for neutron reflectometers and developed for the two instruments (Estia and FREIA) planned for the European Spallation Source in Sweden. A demonstrator has been installed at the AMOR reflectometer at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI - Switzerland). AMOR exploits the Selene guide concept and can be considered a scaled-down demonstrator of Estia. The results of these tests are discussed. It will be shown how the characteristics of the Multi-Blade detector are features that allow the focusing reflectometry operation mode. Additionally the performance of the Multi-Blade, in terms of rate capability, exceeds current state-of-the-art technology. The improvements with respect to the previous prototypes are also highlighted; from background considerations to the linear and angular uniformity response of the detector.

  • Infliximab as rescue therapy in hospitalised patients with steroid-refractory acute ulcerative colitis: a long-term follow-up of 211 Swedish patients
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 38:4, s. 377-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundRescue therapy with infliximab (IFX) has been proven effective in a steroid-refractory attack of ulcerative colitis (UC). The long-term efficacy is not well described. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanAimTo present a retrospective study of IFX as rescue therapy in UC. Primary end points were colectomy-free survival at 3 and 12months. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethodsIn this multicentre study, 211 adult patients hospitalised between 1999 and 2010 received IFX 5mg/kg as rescue therapy due to a steroid-refractory, moderate-to-severe attack of UC. Exclusion criteria were duration of current flare for andgt;12weeks, corticosteroid treatment for andgt;8weeks before hospitalisation, previous IFX therapy or Crohns disease. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResultsProbability of colectomy-free survival at 3months was 0.71 (95% CI, 0.64-0.77), at 12months 0.64 (95% CI, 0.57-0.70), at 3years 0.59 (95% CI, 0.52-0.66) and at 5years 0.53 (95% CI, 0.44-0.61). Steroid-free, clinical remission was achieved in 105/211 (50%) and 112/209 (54%) patients at 3 and 12months respectively. Of 75 colectomies during the first year, 48 (64%) were carried out during the first 14days, 13 (17%) on days 15-90 and 14 (19%) between 3 and 12months. There were three (1.4%) deaths during the first 3months. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusionsInfliximab is an effective rescue treatment, both short- and long-term, in a steroid-refractory attack of UC. Most IFX failures underwent surgery during the first 14days, which calls for studies on how to optimise induction treatment with IFX. Serious complications, including mortality, were rare.

  • A fullerene alloy based photovoltaic blend with a glass transition temperature above 200 degrees C
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 5:8, s. 4156-4162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic solar cells with a high degree of thermal stability require bulk-heterojunction blends that feature a high glass transition, which must occur considerably above the temperatures encountered during device fabrication and operation. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a polymer : fullerene blend with a glass transition temperature above 200 degrees C, which we determine by plasmonic nanospectroscopy. We achieve this strong tendency for glass formation through the use of an alloy of neat, unsubstituted C-60 and C-70, which we combine with the fluorothieno-benzodithiophene copolymer PTB7. A stable photovoltaic performance of PTB7 : C60 : C70 ternary blends is preserved despite annealing the active layer at up to 180 degrees C, which coincides with the onset of the glass transition. Rapid deterioration of the power conversion efficiency from initially above 5% only occurs upon exceeding the glass transition temperature of 224 degrees C of the ternary blend.

  • Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the NiO O K-resonance: non-local charge-transfer and double singlet excitations
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: MAX-lab. - Lund : MAX-lab. ; , s. 270-271
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • NiO is one of the prototypical compounds that has highlighted the importance of correlation effects in transition metal oxides. Core level spectroscopies bear evidence for the highly correlated nature of low energy excitations. For instance, the asymmetry of the Ni2p-line shape has been attributed to non-local charge transfer excitations and multi-site cluster calculations show that solidstate effects generally are appreciable for correlated materials, such as cuprates and high Tc-compounds.....
