  • Multi-Decadal Changes in Tundra Environments and Ecosystems : Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 705-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the responses of tundra systemsto global change has global implications. Most tundraregions lack sustained environmental monitoring and oneof the only ways to document multi-decadal change is toresample historic research sites. The International PolarYear (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such researchthrough the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project#512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 paperswithin this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes includeglacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increasedsnow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, andincreased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden;drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availabilityin Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at mostlocations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relativelyminor plant community change at two sites in Greenland tomoderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increasesin shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in subarcticSweden. The population of geese tripled at one sitein northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plotsdoubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTFstudy forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds andincreases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado overthe next century. In general, results support and provideimproved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies.

  • Effects of sex, feed and pre-slaughter routines on technological meat quality in carriers and non-carriers of the RN- allele
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica - Section A: Animal Science. - : Taylor and Francis AS. - 0906-4702 .- 1651-1972. ; 53:3, s. 147-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this project was to study the effects of feeding system (dry or wet feeding with whey), dietary lysine level and pre-slaughter routines on technological meat quality in entire male, female and castrated male pigs, which were carriers or non-carriers of the RN- allele. The feeding system only affected the yield of processed meat, resulting in lower Napole yield (87.5% vs 89.4%) for meat of whey fed pigs. Further, lower dietary lysine levels resulted in higher drip loss of the meat compared with high dietary levels (5.3% vs 4.8%). Mixing of unfamiliar pigs prior to slaughter led to meat with lower internal reflectance values (28.3 vs 32.2) and glucose + G-6-P concentrations of the meat juice (46.3 vs 49.7 μmol/ml) compared with pen-wise slaughtering. In comparison with non-carriers, RN- carriers had significantly lower ultimate pH, shear force values and water-holding capacity. Mixing of non-carrier pigs prior to slaughter gave higher Napole yield compared with those handled pen-wise. Females had lower ultimate pH and higher Napole yield compared with entire males.

  • Nurses' experiences of using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale with patients in specialized palliative care : A qualitative focus group study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nursing Open. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 2054-1058. ; 10:12, s. 7639-7649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM : To explore nurses' experiences of using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) as a communication tool in specialized palliative care. DESIGN : This study employed a qualitative inductive approach. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research were followed for reporting. METHODS : Five focus groups were conducted with nurses from four specialized palliative care units, and the discussions were analysed with quality content analysis. RESULTS : Using IPOS for communication with the patient gave an opportunity to understand the patient's care needs and to let these care needs guide care interventions. Prerequisites in terms of relation, atmosphere, skills and flexibility were needed to establish an interactive communication. It was challenging to communicate about issues that evoked emotional reactions in the patient. There was a balancing act between the use of a structured scale and overcoming communication challenges. Nonetheless, when the two complemented each other, IPOS was a useful tool for nurses to promote person-centred care.

  • Health and quality of life in an aging population - Food and beyond
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Food Quality and Preference. - : Elsevier BV. - 0950-3293 .- 1873-6343. ; 47, s. 166-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Europe the percentage of citizens aged 65 and over is increasing at an unprecedented rate, and is expected to account for over 30% of the population by 2050. Coupled with an increase in life expectancy, this massive demographic change calls for a major effort to ensure quality of life in our older population. A thorough understanding of the elderly as food consumers, their nutritional needs, their food perception and preferences is increasingly needed. The role of food in healthy aging was a prominent theme at the 6th European Conference on Sensory and Consumer Research, which had quality of life across the life span as a focal point. This short paper is based on a workshop held at the EuroSense meeting, focusing on research from sensory and consumer scientists. The workshop featured contributions focusing on food-related perception, needs and behavior of the elderly, and aimed at demonstrating the relevance of sensory and consumer scientists in promoting food-related well-being in an aging population. The workshop contributions are here reviewed and summarized three main themes: nutritional needs, food perception and aging, and behavioral drivers of food consumption.

  • Sire breed has a larger impact on sensory and technological meat quality than dam breed in beef-on-dairy heifers reared on forage and semi-natural grasslands
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Livestock Science. - : Elsevier. - 1871-1413 .- 1878-0490. ; 282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate the meat quality of beef-on-dairy heifers from Holstein or Swedish Red-and-White dams sired by Angus or Charolais bulls reared on forage and semi-natural grasslands. Production systems with moderately high and low feeding intensities were compared, where animals grazed for one or two summers and were slaughtered at 20 or 27 months of age, respectively. Meat quality of crossbred heifers from Holstein and Swedish Red-and-White dams was comparable in M. longissimus lumborum (LL) and differed in pH, yellowness and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) in M. semimembranosus (SM) with Swedish Red-and-White being less tough. Compared with LL from Charolais crossbreeds, LL from Angus was redder and had lower WBSF, higher intramuscular fat concentration (IMF%), a more pronounced metallic flavour and a more pronounced umami taste. Meat quality of SM did not differ between Angus and Charolais crossbreeds. Generally, the production system with moderately high feeding intensity resulted in less tough beef that was lighter and less red and had higher IMF%. Consequently, beef from Charolais crossbreeds reared at a low feeding intensity exhibited the poorest meat quality with the lowest IMF% in LL (2.80 and 3.77 % for Holstein and Swedish Red-and-White, respectively). Nevertheless, crossbreeds did not differ in sensory meat quality. Generally, meat quality of beef-on-dairy heifers reared on forage and semi-natural grasslands was high, and while Angus crossbreeds delivered high-quality beef from both feeding intensities, Charolais crossbreeds are better suited for the moderately high feeding intensity, when aiming for high meat quality.

  • Using Cards to Facilitate Conversations About Wishes and Priorities of Patients in Palliative Care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing. - : Lippincott Williams and Wilkins Ltd.. - 1522-2179 .- 1539-0705. ; 22:1, s. 33-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To avoid discomfort, health care professionals may hesitate to pursue conversations about end of life with patients. Certain tools have the potential to facilitate smoother conversations in this matter. The objective was to explore the experiences of patients in palliative care in using statement cards to talk about their wishes and priorities. Forty-six cards with statements of wishes and priorities were developed and tested for feasibility with 40 participants, who chose the 10 most important cards and shared their thoughts about the statements and conversation. Data from individual interviews and field notes were analyzed using content analysis. One category describes practical aspects of using the cards including the relevance of the content and the process of sorting the cards. The second category describes the significance of using the cards including becoming aware of what is important, sharing wishes and priorities, and reflecting on whether wishes and priorities change closer to death. The cards helped raise awareness and verbalize wishes and priorities. All statements were considered relevant. The conversations focused not only on death and dying, but also on challenges in the participants' current life situation. For the most ill and frail participants, the number of cards needs to be reduced.

  • Seed dispersal between aquatic and agricultural habitats by greylag geese
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0167-8809 .- 1873-2305. ; 359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waterbirds disperse plant seeds within and between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in their faeces. However, seed dispersal distances, connectivity among habitat types, and implications for dispersal of weeds remain unquantified in agricultural landscapes. Therefore, we GPS-tagged 31 greylag geese Anser anser and collected 300 faecal samples from feeding flocks in seven agricultural habitats (four cereals, hayfields, pasture, and strawberries) across two landscapes in southern Sweden. We identified intact seeds, determined key plant traits, and tested three hypotheses: (1) geese ingest, transport, and egest seeds from a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic plants, including weeds and alien species; (2) the community and trait composition of plant seeds in faeces vary between habitat types; and (3) seed dispersal by geese is a directional dispersal mechanism that connects some habitat types more than others. We recovered 131 seeds from 41 plant species (19 families), including nine agricultural weeds and one alien species. Many seeds were from aquatic plants (45%), dispersed into terrestrial habitats. A connectivity network formed between habitat types (as nodes) and direct flights (as links) revealed that all agricultural habitats were directly connected with each other, although 66% of flights were between aquatic and agricultural habitats. Geese spent most time at lakes (34%), pastures (14%), barley (10%) and wheat (8%) fields, which were also the most interconnected habitats, with high seed species richness and seed abundance in faecal samples. Combining waterfowl movement data with faecal analysis provided support for all three hypotheses. Geese may contribute to previously overlooked agricultural conflicts through weed dispersal. Proximity to aquatic habitats suitable for roosting may increases the use of agricultural habitats, and potentially the seed dispersal into them.

  • A Reduced Deck of Conversation Cards of Wishes and Priorities of Patients in Palliative Care
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing. - : Lippincott Williams and Wilkins Ltd.. - 1522-2179 .- 1539-0705. ; 24:3, s. 175-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The individual wishes and priorities of patients with advanced disease are too often neglected, making a deck of cards with statements reflecting potential wishes and priorities a useful conversation tool. However, in the most ill patients, the card selection and sorting process may be too strenuous. The aims of this study were to explore the wishes and priorities of patients receiving palliative care and to reduce a deck of statement cards to be clinically useable even for the most ill patients. In interviews, participants selected their top 10 from a deck of 46 statement cards. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used. Thirty-nine patients from 5 specialized palliative care units in Sweden participated. Six participants died within 1 month of the interviews. "To be free from pain"was ranked as the highest priority by the majority, and "To have staff I feel comfortable with"was ranked highest by the 6 most ill participants. A deck of cards with the 20 statements most chosen by patients receiving palliative care was created. The cards cover physical, psychological, social, existential, and practical aspects and are helpful for formulating goals of care for patients and informing the development of a core outcome set for palliative care.

  • Bridging gaps in everyday life : a free-listing approach to explore the variety of activities performed by physiotherapists in specialized palliative care
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Palliative Care. - : BioMed Central Ltd.. - 1472-684X. ; 17:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A growing body of studies indicate benefits of physiotherapy for patients in palliative care, for symptom relief and wellbeing. Though physiotherapists are increasingly acknowledged as important members of palliative care teams, they are still an underutilized source and not fully recognized. The aim of this study was to explore the variety of activities described by physiotherapists in addressing the needs and problems of patients and their families in specialized palliative care settings. METHODS: Using a free-listing approach, ten physiotherapists working in eight specialized palliative care settings in Sweden described as precisely and in as much detail as possible different activities in which patients and their families were included (directly or indirectly) during 10 days. The statements were entered into NVivo and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Statements containing more than one activity were categorized per activity. RESULTS: In total, 264 statements, containing 504 varied activities, were coded into seven categories: Counteracting a declining physical function; Informing, guiding and educating; Observing, assessing and evaluating; Attending to signs and symptoms; Listening, talking with and understanding; Caring for basic needs; and Organizing, planning and coordinating. In practice, however, the activities were intrinsically interwoven. The activities showed how physiotherapists aimed, through care for the body, to address patients' physical, psychological, social and existential needs, counteracting the decline in a patient's physical function and wellbeing. The activities also revealed a great variation, in relation not only to what they did, but also to their holistic and inseparable nature with regard to why, how, when, where, with whom and for whom the activities were carried out, which points towards a well-adopted person-centred palliative care approach. CONCLUSIONS: The study provides hands-on descriptions of how person-centred palliative care is integrated in physiotherapists' everyday activities. Physiotherapists in specialized palliative care help patients and families to bridge the gap between their real and ideal everyday life with the aim to maximize security, autonomy and wellbeing. The concrete examples included can be used in understanding the contribution of physiotherapists to the palliative care team and inform future research interventions and outcomes.

  • Sensory characteristics of meat from steers of various breeds and rearing intensities
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The most common category of young cattle slaughtered for beef in Sweden is bulls of dairy breed, most often reared indoors. There is however a potential in raising steers (castrated bulls) for slaughter on semi-natural pasture, which may have an impact on sensory properties of the meat. Furthermore, weight gain and carcass characteristics may be improved by crossing dairy breeds with specialised beef breeds. In combination with the new technique of sex-sorted dairy semen, beef breed semen can be used to the less superior cows in the herd without jeopardizing an adequate number of replacement heifers from the superior cows. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there are any differences in sensory meat quality between cross bred and purebred cattle and between two rearing intensities including semi-natural pasture. Sensory properties were evaluated by a trained, analytical panel consisting of six assessors by the use of descriptive analysis. The intensity of iron, acidic, tallow, milky and barny odour as well as metallic, barny and gamey flavour and basic tastes were assessed in triplicate along with attributes describing the appearance and texture of the meat. Differences were mainly found in appearance and texture attributes, but also gamey flavour and the intensity of umami were affected by the rearing and breeding regimes. The meat quality results from this study will be combined with results from other disciplines such as animal science, business administration and environmental science. It is important to be able to demonstrate various possible added values that comes from pasture-based beef production systems under Swedish conditions.
