- APEX, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, has been successfully commissioned and is in operation now. This novel submillimeter telescope is located at 5107 m altitude on Llano de Chajnantor in the Chilean High Andes, on what is considered one of the world's outstanding sites for submillimeter astronomy. The primary reflector with 12 m diameter has been carefully adjusted by means of holography. Its surface smoothness of 17-18 μm makes APEX suitable for observations up to 200 μm, through all atmospheric submm windows accessible from the ground.

- The contamination, enrichment and source of arsenic (As) and other heavy metals in the soil and plants of famous coal mining city of central India, Korba are described. The black carbon and Fe in the surface soil was ranged from 11.4-21.7 and 12.3-39.9%. The concentration of other heavy metals i.e. manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) also present in the soil above the tolerance limits. They accumulated in the surrounding plants at the elevated levels.

- The distribution of arsenic (As) in the soil, rice grain and straw of Kaudikasa, Rajnandgaon, central India is described. Speciation of monomethylarsenonate (MMA) and dimethylarsinite (DMA) and As(III) in the rice grain is presented. A remarkably high concentration of arsenic in soil is observed. The geogenic sources of arsenic and other metals in the soil were apportioned.

New Grid Scheduling and Rescheduling Methods in the GrADS Project

- Summary form only given. The goal of the Grid Application Development Software (GrADS) project is to provide programming tools and an execution environment to ease program development for the grid. We present recent extensions to the GrADS software framework: 1. A new approach to scheduling workflow computations, applied to a 3D image reconstruction application; 2. A simple stop/migrate/restart approach to rescheduling grid applications, applied to a QR 3. A process-swapping approach to rescheduling, applied to an N-body simulation. Experiments validating these methods were carried out on both the GrADS MacroGrid (a small but functional grid) and the MicroGrid (a controlled emulation of the grid) and the results were demonstrated at the SC2003 conference.

- Dedicated, unbiased spectral scans of asymptotic giant branch stars have so far been published only for a few carbon-rich stars, with a strong focus on the nearby and bright IRC +10216. We present results from a spectral survey of the circumstellar envelope of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK Tau obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at similar to 0 ''.9 angular resolution in the frequency range 279 - 355 GHz, expanding the molecular inventory for M-type evolved stars and filling an observational gap. The survey shows over 140 emission lines, belonging to more than 30 species. The emission of AlO and of several vibrationally excited species traces the acceleration of the wind. Isotopic ratios for carbon, silicon, and sulfur will be derived from the observed emission of isotopologues of CO, SiO, SiS, HCN, SO, and SO2. This will allow us to constrain the AGB nucleosynthesis of IK Tau. We highlight the first detection of PO and PN around an oxygen-rich AGB star, detected at unexpectedly high abundances, and emphasise the importance of unbiased spectral surveys of AGB stars and the need for updated chemical models.
