  • Final report of the CCQM-K145 : Toxic and essential elements in bovine liver
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Metrologia. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 0026-1394 .- 1681-7575. ; 57:1 A
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liver plays a major role in metabolism and acts as a source of energy for the body by storing glycogen. With the growing interest and investigation in the biological effects in recent years, it is important and necessary to develop accurate and comparable analytical methods for elements in bio-samples. It has, however, been 10 years since the tissue sample (bovine liver) of CCQM-K49 key comparison. The purpose of CCQM-K145 is to ensure the comparable and traceable measurement results for essential and toxic elements such as P, S, Zn, Mn, Ni, Mo, Sr, Cr, Co, Pb, As and Hg in bovine liver among NMIs and other designated measurement bodies worldwide. The comparison was agreed by IAWG as 6th IAWG Benchmarking Exercise with Zn and Ni as exemplary elements at the meeting in Korea in the early October 2016. The results of CCQM-K145 are expected to cover the measurement capability and support CMCs claiming for inorganic elements in the similar biological tissue materials and food samples. 30 NMIs and DIs registered in CCQM-K145. With respect to the methodology, a variety of techniques such as IDMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS(non-ID), AAS and NAA were adopted by the participants. For Zn, Ni, Sr, Pb and Hg measurements, most participants chose ID-ICP-MS method, which showed the better performance in terms of consistency and reliability of the measurement results. In aspect of the traceability for the measurement results in CCQM-K145, most participants used their own (in house) CRMs or other NMI's CRMs to guarantee trace to SI unit. Most participants used similar matrix CRMs for quality control or method validation. Base on different statistic way to calculate the reference mass fraction values and associated uncertainties for each measurand, removal of the suspected extreme values, and discussion at the IAWG meetings, the median values are proposed as the KCRV for Zn, Ni, Mn, Mo, Cr, Pb and Hg; the arithmetic mean values are proposed as the KCRV for P, S, Sr, Co and As. In general, the performances of the majority of CCQM-K145 participants are very good, illustrating their measurement capabilities for Zn, Ni, P, S, Mn, Mo, Sr, Cr, As, Co, Pb and Hg in a complex biological tissue matrix. Bovine liver contains many kinds of nutrients and microelements, it can be regarded as a typical representative material of biological tissue and food. In CCQM-K145, the analytes involved alkali metals and transition elements, metalloids/semi-metals and non metals with a range of mass fraction from mg/g to μg/kg. CCQM-K145 also tested the ability of NMIs/DIs to determine elements that were easy to be lost and polluted, and interfered significantly. The chemical pretreatment methods of samples used in the comparison is suitable for general food and biological matrix samples. A variety of measurement methods used in the comparison represent the main instrumental technology for elemental analysis. Therefore, for supporting CMC claim, CCQM-K145 is readily applicable to measurement of more elements in a wide range of biological materials (including liquids and solids) and meat products. • Universal Patterns in Color-Emotion Associations Are Further Shaped by Linguistic and Geographic Proximity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Psychological Science. - : SAGE Publications Inc.. - 0956-7976 .- 1467-9280. ; 31:10, s. 1245-1260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many of us “see red,” “feel blue,” or “turn green with envy.” Are such color-emotion associations fundamental to our shared cognitive architecture, or are they cultural creations learned through our languages and traditions? To answer these questions, we tested emotional associations of colors in 4,598 participants from 30 nations speaking 22 native languages. Participants associated 20 emotion concepts with 12 color terms. Pattern-similarity analyses revealed universal color-emotion associations (average similarity coefficient r =.88). However, local differences were also apparent. A machine-learning algorithm revealed that nation predicted color-emotion associations above and beyond those observed universally. Similarity was greater when nations were linguistically or geographically close. This study highlights robust universal color-emotion associations, further modulated by linguistic and geographic factors. These results pose further theoretical and empirical questions about the affective properties of color and may inform practice in applied domains, such as well-being and design. © The Author(s) 2020.

  • SAFEXPLAIN : Safe and Explainable Critical Embedded Systems Based on AI
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings -Design, Automation and Test in Europe, DATE. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9783981926378
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep Learning (DL) techniques are at the heart of most future advanced software functions in Critical Autonomous AI-based Systems (CAIS), where they also represent a major competitive factor. Hence, the economic success of CAIS industries (e.g., automotive, space, railway) depends on their ability to design, implement, qualify, and certify DL-based software products under bounded effort/cost. However, there is a fundamental gap between Functional Safety (FUSA) requirements on CAIS and the nature of DL solutions. This gap stems from the development process of DL libraries and affects high-level safety concepts such as (1) explainability and traceability, (2) suitability for varying safety requirements, (3) FUSA-compliant implementations, and (4) real-time constraints. As a matter of fact, the data-dependent and stochastic nature of DL algorithms clashes with current FUSA practice, which instead builds on deterministic, verifiable, and pass/fail test-based software. The SAFEXPLAIN project tackles these challenges and targets by providing a flexible approach to allow the certification - hence adoption - of DL-based solutions in CAIS building on: (1) DL solutions that provide end-to-end traceability, with specific approaches to explain whether predictions can be trusted and strategies to reach (and prove) correct operation, in accordance to certification standards; (2) alternative and increasingly sophisticated design safety patterns for DL with varying criticality and fault tolerance requirements; (3) DL library implementations that adhere to safety requirements; and (4) computing platform configurations, to regain determinism, and probabilistic timing analyses, to handle the remaining non-determinism.

  • Acousto-optic interaction in polyimide coated optical fibers with flexural waves
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 25:15, s. 17167-17173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acousto-optic coupling in polyimide-coated single-mode optical fibers using flexural elastic waves is demonstrated. The effect of the polyimide coating on the acousto-optic interaction process is analyzed in detailed. Theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement. Although the elastic attenuation is significant, we show that acousto-optic coupling can be produced with a reasonably good efficiency. To our knowledge, it is the first experimental demonstration of acousto-optic coupling in optical fibers with robust protective coating.

  • Proposal of a New Tool for Pre-Straining Operations of Sheet Metals and an Initial Investigation of CR4 Mild Steel Formability
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-899X. ; 1284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increased focus on reducing carbon emissions in the automotive industry, more advanced materials are introduced to reduce the vehicle weight, and more complex component geometries are designed to both satisfy customer demands and to optimize the vehicle aerodynamically. With the increase in component complexity, the strain paths produced during the forming operation of car body components often display a highly non-linear behavior which makes the task of failure prediction during the manufacturing feasibility studies more difficult. Therefore, CAE engineers need better capabilities to predict failure induced by strain path nonlinearity. This study proposes a new tool designed for creating bi-linear strain paths, by performing a pre-strain of a sheet large enough to cut out Nakajima specimens to perform the post-straining in any direction. From five pre-straining tests the tool present a stable pre-straining operation with a uniform strain field in a radius of 100 [mm] from the centre, corresponding to the region of interest of a Nakajima specimen. From the five pre-strained samples, different Nakajima specimens are cut transverse and longitudinal to the rolling direction and a failure prediction approach in an alternative, path independent evaluation space was used to predict the onset of necking with promising results.

  • Ecosystem for customer experience assurance
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 International Conference on Smart Communications in Network Technologies, SaCoNeT 2013. - 9781479906949
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays service providers focus all their effort on customers' satisfaction although determining the Quality of Experience (QoE) is not a trivial task. In addition, the evolution from traditional networks towards Next Generation Networks (NGN) is enabling service providers to deploy a wide range of multimedia services such as Internet Television (IPTV), Video on Demand (VoD), and multiplayer games services, all on the same underlying IP network. However, managing the satisfaction level of customers to provide a good user experience is not being an easy task due to the complexity of orchestrating network and customer data sources. This document proposes an ecosystem that allows managing customer experience in order to guarantee the quality levels delivered to end users, which is being implemented into the Celtic IPNQSIS project. The QoE ecosystem lies on a customer experience architecture formed by Data acquisition level, Monitoring level and Control Level. The work proposed in this paper will settle the basis of next generation Customer Experience Management systems.

  • A global customer experience management architecture
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 Future Network and Mobile Summit, FutureNetw 2012. - 9781905824304
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quality of experience (QoE) is one of the main research lines in ITC industry, which seeks to manage quality as perceived by users. This document analyzes and describes requirements of a QoE driven management system architecture, which has been designed in the Celtic IPNQSIS project. The architecture is grouped into different levels: Data acquisition level, Monitoring level and Control Level. Each level comprises a specific set of capacities, such as Data collector, or Traffic Monitor amongst others. The architecture described in this paper constitutes the guidelines of the IPNQSIS project in terms of a QoE ecosystem that will settle the basis of global customer experience management architecture.

  • Heart fossilization is possible and informs the evolution of cardiac outflow tract in vertebrates
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5:APRIL2016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elucidating cardiac evolution has been frustrated by lack of fossils. One celebrated enigma in cardiac evolution involves the transition from a cardiac outflow tract dominated by a Multi-Valved conus arteriosus in basal actinopterygians, to an outflow tract commanded by the Non- Valved, elastic, bulbus arteriosus in higher actinopterygians. We demonstrate that cardiac preservation is possible in the extinct fish Rhacolepis buccalis from the Brazilian Cretaceous. Using X-Ray synchrotron microtomography, we show that Rhacolepis fossils display hearts with a conus arteriosus containing at least five valve rows. This represents a transitional morphology between the primitive, multivalvar, conal condition and the derived, monovalvar, bulbar state of the outflow tract in modern actinopterygians. Our data rescue a Long-Lost cardiac phenotype (119-113 Ma) and suggest that outflow tract simplification in actinopterygians is compatible with a gradual, rather than a drastic saltation event. Overall, our results demonstrate the feasibility of studying cardiac evolution in fossils.

  • Microstructural study of the NbC to G-phase transformation in HP-Nb alloys
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materialia. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2589-1529. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The microstructure of a centrifugally cast HP alloy was studied in its as-received state and after ageing at 900 °C. A multi-scale approach combining X Ray Diffraction (XRD), advanced electron microscopy modes (scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM, TEM), together with focused ion beam/SEM nanotomography (FIB-nt)) has been carried out to characterize the evolution of niobium carbides during ageing. After thermal treatment, the carbides exhibit a complex microstructure, consisting of a core of untransformed NbC, an intermediate layer of G-phase (Ni16Nb6Si7) with embedded nanometric titanium carbide precipitates, and an outer shell of alternating chromium carbides Cr23C6 and G-phase. A simple diffusion model was used to explain the faster external growth of G-phase compared to the internal NbC dissolution, and to determine a diffusion coefficient of niobium in the G-phase at 900 °C.
