- This is a conversation analytic study examining how two ways of answering emergency calls have different implications and consequences for the ensuing interaction. In an older corpus of 22 calls to a Swedish emergency center, the calls were routinely answered with an identification phrase “ninety thousand” (i.e. the telephone number 90 000) or “SOS ninety thousand”, whereas the 52 calls in a recently collected corpus are routinely answered with an identification phrase followed by a question, taking the format “SOS 1-1-2, what has occurred?” The analysis shows how the different answering formats affect what is being brought up at different sequential positions during call beginnings, and also how the standardized relational pair of “help provider” and “help seeker”, each with its respective rights and obligations, is constructed. The article concludes with a discussion of the benefits of the latter way of answering emergency calls, arguing that it helps making the distribution of responsibilities among the interactants clear, and that it allows for a truncation of an unnecessary sequence. In this way, the latter format enhances topical progression and promotes institutional relevance.

- I denna artikel redogör vi för en mindre delstudie i det pågående, och av Vetenskapsrådet finansierade, projektet Från ord till siffror. Hur läsning blir ett samhälleligt och didaktiskt problem. Med hjälp av teoretiska och metodologiska perspektiv från Science- and Technology Studies (STS) undersöker vi i projektet hur forskning, läsfrämjande aktörer och skolans svenskundervisning deltar i och konstruerar diskurser om läsningens nödvändighet. I den delstudie som är aktuell här fokuserar vi på Sveriges Författarförbund (SFF) och deras lansering av ett litteraturpolitiskt program under våren 2022. Vi undersöker på vilka sätt SFF använder exempelvis metaforen om litteraturens ekosystem och siffror som sanningsskapande praktiker. Det empiriska materialet består av SFF:s tryckta litteraturpolitiska program från 2022, en intervju med förbundets vice ordförande, samt fältanteckningar från en heldagskonferens om litteraturpolitik arrangerad av SFF. Analysen visar att ekologi och siffror är kraftfulla tekniker som skapar en berättelse om läsningens nödvändighet och utsatthet, samtidigt som dessa sanningspraktiker också genererar motsägelser och motsättningar. Läsning etableras här såväl som oumbärligt för samhället och individen, och som under hot från en mängd aktörer och processer, däribland marknadifieringen och digitaliseringen.

Population genomics of post-glacial western Eurasia

- Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1–5. Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes—mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods—from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a ‘great divide’ genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate. Large-scale ancestry shifts occurred in the west as farming was introduced, including near-total replacement of hunter-gatherers in many areas, whereas no substantial ancestry shifts happened east of the zone during the same period. Similarly, relatedness decreased in the west from the Neolithic transition onwards, whereas, east of the Urals, relatedness remained high until around 4,000 bp, consistent with the persistence of localized groups of hunter-gatherers. The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 bp, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a ‘Neolithic steppe’ cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

- This dissertation deals with curriculum debates concerning science, mathematics and technology within the Swedish secondary schools between 1900 and 1965. The aim of the study is to analyze different conceptions of these school subjects. How were they looked upon and presented during the debates? What kind of values and functions were they said to promote? I also discuss more principal questions regarding why the school subjects became objects for debate. Why did different actors engage in these discussions? A leading perspective of the study is that schools and their curricula often are used as arenas for larger debates concerning the role of science and technology in society. One of the reasons for this, I argue, is that a curriculum often is seen as representing a standpoint in these broader societal discussions. In the study, this is shown through a number of different debates concerning, for example, the amount of hours devoted to science, student conducted experiments, eugenics and environmental aspects. All of these issues demonstrate how the shape of curriculum was seen as having wider significance for society. An important reason for this is the connection between curriculum and future perspectives. Situations where a curriculum was to be rewritten were apprehended as opportunities to influence and secure the future. Much previous work on curriculum matters has been occupied with the question of what curriculum “does” in schools; it includes and excludes certain ideas, it regulates and governs students to understand and reason about themselves in specific ways. In relation to this, my own research deals with what curriculum – or rather the image of curriculum – does to other groups in society. Through analyzing the engagement of teachers, politicians, authors and editors, I conclude that a curriculum can threaten or promise future perspectives and values that are important to these groups.
