  • Effective photocatalytic sterilization based on composites of Ag/InVO4/BiOBr : Factors, mechanism and application

    • We hypothesized that photocatalysts with a low band gap could be useful in the sterilization of ceramic tiles in the natural environments of toilets using natural light in those settings. Certain photocatalysts can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light illumination, which in turn are bactericidal. The properties of the BiOBr-containing photocatalysts were tuned by creating junctions and heterostructures with Ag and InVO4 and studied with respect to their bactericidal effect in dispersion. The bactericidal mechanism was studied through experiments in which active species were captured and via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. At an optimal dosage of 0.5 g/L, the Ag/InVO4/BiOBr composite had a sterilization efficacy of 99.9999 % in 30 min under visible light illumination of 1000 W. It retained a sterilization efficacy of 99.999 % after four cycles. Anions such as Cl−, SO42−, and NO3− were shown to have no negative impact on sterilization efficacy. It was shown that the holes in the composite photocatalyst and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were mechanistically critical for the sterilization. The photocatalysts were also studied in the field in the natural environment of a restroom, where they were loaded on ceramic tiles. Samples were collected from the surface of the ceramic tiles and analyzed for bacterial cultures and microbial diversity. The results were compared in the scope of the sterilization ability of various agents at the microbial level. The ceramic tiles loaded with Ag/InVO4/BiOBr showed the least amount of bacteria on their surfaces, and the microbial community richness was also the lowest.

    • Growing concerns about energy conservation and the environmental impacts of greenhouse gas emissions over the world have promoted the development of the electric vehicles (EVs) market. However, one of the biggest barriers in the development of the EV market is the lack of the public charging infrastructure. This paper reviews the factors that can directly and indirectly influence the economics of the public charging infrastructure. The knowledge gaps, barriers and opportunities in the development of the charging infrastructure have been identified and analyzed. In order to promote the development of the public charging infrastructure, more research efforts should be paid on the impacts of psychological factors of customers and the technical development of charging infrastructures and EV batteries. The government support has been proved to play an important role, so that how the government policy can be tailored for the development of the charging infrastructure market should receive more attentions. In addition, the charging price as an endogenous factor should be considered more carefully in modelling the charging infrastructure market. New business models are also urgently needed to accelerate the future development of the public charging infrastructure.

    • This paper demonstrates the use of a new model consisting of a genetic algorithm in combination with thermodynamic calculations and analytical process models to minimize the processing time during a vacuum degassing treatment of liquid steel. The model sets multiple simultaneous targets for final S, N, O, Si and Al levels and uses the total slag mass, the slag composition, the steel composition and the start temperature as optimization variables. The predicted optimal conditions agree well with industrial practice. For those conditions leading to the shortest process time the target compositions for S, N and O are reached almost simultaneously.

    • The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as refrigerant is driven by the need to phase down the traditional synthetic refrigerant so as to mitigate the warming climate. In this study, the thermal performance of a two-stage compression transcritical CO2 refrigeration system with R290 mechanical subcooling unit is conducted. The goal is to obtain the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) of five different mechanical subcooling systems under the optimal subcooling temperature and compressor discharge pressure. The two-throttling and two-stage compression high-pressure mechanical subcooling system is found to have a higher COP. When the evaporation temperature is −30 °C, the COP of the two-throttling and two-stage compression high-pressure mechanical subcooling system is improved by 76.74%. The COP of the two-throttling and two-stage compression high-pressure mechanical subcooling system is 1.52 at an ambient temperature of 40 °C, which is 21.87% higher than that of the two-throttling and two-stage compression low-pressure mechanical subcooling system. The power consumption ratio of one-throttling and two-stage compression low-pressure mechanical subcooling system is significantly higher than that of other systems. From a comprehensive analysis of the proposed four systems, the two-throttling and two-stage compression high-pressure mechanical subcooling system has the best performance over all other systems.

    • This study explored the denitrification performance of solid-phase denitrification (SPD) systems packed with poly (butylene succinate)/bamboo powder composite to treat synthetic aquaculture wastewater under different salinity conditions (0‰ Vs. 25‰). The results showed composite could achieve the maximum denitrification rates of 0.22 kg (salinity, 0‰) and 0.34 kg NO3−-N m−3 d−1 (salinity, 25‰) over 200-day operation. No significant nitrite accumulation and less dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release (<15 mg/L) were found. The morphological and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated the mixture composites degradation. Microbial community analysis showed that Acidovorax, Simplicispira, Denitromonas, SM1A02, Marinicella and Formosa were the dominant genera for denitrifying bacteria, while Aspergillus was the major genus for denitrifying fungus. The co-network analysis also indicated the interactions between bacterial and fungal community played an important role in composite degradation and denitrification. The outcomes provided a potential strategy of DOC control and cost reduction for aquaculture nitrate removal by SPD.

  • Two-step growth of high-quality nano-diamond films using CH 4/H 2 gas mixture

    • Diamond films with fine grain size and good quality were successfully deposited on pure titanium substrate using a novel two-step growth technique in microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (MWPCVD) system. The films were grown with varying the methane (CH4) concentration at the stage of bias-enhanced nucleation (BEN) and nano-diamond film deposition. It was found that nano-diamond nuclei were formed at a relatively high methane concentration, causing a secondary nucleation at the accompanying growth step. Nano-diamond film deposition on pure titanium was always very hard due to the high diffusion coefficient of carbon in Ti, the big difference between thermal expansion coefficients of diamond and Ti, the complex nature of the interlayer created during diamond deposition, and the difficulty in achieving very high nucleation density. A smooth and well-adhered nano-diamond film was successfully obtained on pure Ti substrate. Detailed experimental results on the synthesis, characterization and successful deposition of the nano-diamond film on pure Ti are discussed

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge 2015, VOT2015, aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 62 trackers are presented. The number of tested trackers makes VOT 2015 the largest benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the appendix. Features of the VOT2015 challenge that go beyond its VOT2014 predecessor are: (i) a new VOT2015 dataset twice as large as in VOT2014 with full annotation of targets by rotated bounding boxes and per-frame attribute, (ii) extensions of the VOT2014 evaluation methodology by introduction of a new performance measure. The dataset, the evaluation kit as well as the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Application of Crowdfunding on the Financing of EV's Charging Piles

    • The market penetration of electric vehicle is subject to the capacity of charging facility greatly, however the development of charging facility is influenced by the economic incentives. In this study, the crowdfunding method is applied for financing the construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging piles, and its advantages was focused and proved. A three-stage sequential game model was developed considering power grid, infrastructure operators and crowdfunders to analyze the performance of crowdfunding in charging pile construction. The result shows that crowdfunding can increase charging piles construction amount by 70% and crowdfunding's promoting effect equals the effect of supplying 40% subsidy for construction fee. Thus crowdfunding is a simple but efficient way to boost the penetration of charging piles.

  • A Multi-objective Design Optimization of a Centrifugal Cooling Fan on a TEFC Motor

    • A design optimization method of a centrifugal fan on a totally-enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motor was studied in this paper. A multi-objective optimization problem was formulated which is to decrease noise level of fan and to increase air flow rate at the same time. Two design variables, namely fan diameter (D) and blade height (H), were investigated. Responses surface models were established based on design of experiments to identify the mathematical relationships between fan performances and the design parameters. These models were later used in optimization. As a result, a Pareto front was obtained which illustrated the optimal trade-offs that can be achieved in design. The Pareto front was then experimentally verified on an in-house test rig by using acoustic holography techniques.
