  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • In: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Initial multi-node and antenna transmitter and receiver architectures and schemes; Deliverable D5.1
  • 2016
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This deliverable provides the initial concepts and solutions from the technical work related to multi-antenna and multi-node transceiver schemes in millimetre wave (denoted as 6-100GHz) spectrum. It also briefly presents the use cases on which the work will be based and categorises the solutions in terms of their applicability to access, backhaul and relay deployments. Another important contribution from this report is the modelling of the hardware impairments in millimetre wave transceivers and the analysis of their impact on system performance.

  • Frequency noise of a normal dispersion microresonator-based frequency comb
  • 2017
  • In: Optics InfoBase Conference Papers. - 2162-2701. - 9781943580231 ; , s. W2A.6-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Using delayed self-heterodyne coherent detection, we characterized the FM noise across the C-band of a widely spaced microresonator-based frequency comb. The resulting linewidth depends on both the pump laser and the comb line position.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We demonstrate a scheme to scale the bandwidth of a frequency comb generated by phase modulation of CW lasers using four-wave mixing in a silicon nano-waveguides, resulting in >100 comb lines spaced by 10-GHz within 5-dB bandwidth.

  • Metal-insulator transition in manganites: Changes in optical conductivity up to 22 eV
  • 2008
  • In: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 78:12, s. 125110 (art. no.)-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The electronic response of doped manganites at the transition from the paramagnetic insulating to the ferromagnetic metallic state in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) for x=0.3 and 0.2 was investigated by dc conductivity, ellipsometry, and vacuum ultraviolet reflectance for energies between 0 and 22 eV. A stabilized Kramers-Kronig transformation yields the optical conductivity and reveals changes in the optical spectral weight up to 22 eV at the metal-to-insulator transition. In the observed energy range, the spectral weight is conserved within 0.3%. The redistribution of spectral weight in this surprisingly broad energy range has important ramifications for the effective low-energy physics. We discuss the importance of the charge-transfer, Coulomb on-site, Jahn-Teller, and long-range Coulomb screening effects to the electronic structure.

  • Photo absorption enhancement in strained silicon nanowires: An atomistic study
  • 2017
  • In: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 122:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The absorption spectra of silicon nanowires are calculated using semi-empirical sp(3) d(5) s* tight binding and Density Functional Theory methods. The roles of diameter, wave function symmetry, strain, and crystallographic direction in determining the absorption are discussed. We find that compressive strain can change the band edge absorption by more than one order of magnitude due to the change in wave function symmetry. In addition, photon polarization with respect to the nanowire axis significantly alters the band edge absorption. Overall, the band edge absorption of [ 110] and [100] silicon nanowires can differ by as much as three orders of magnitude. We find that compared to bulk Silicon, a strained Silicon nanowire array can absorb infrared photons (1.1 eV) approximately one hundred times better. Finally, we compare a fully numerical and a computationally efficient semi-analytical method, and find that they both yield satisfactory values of the band edge absorption.

  • STRUCTURAL SUPERCAPACITOR COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR
  • 2022
  • In: ECCM 2022 - Proceedings of the 20th European Conference on Composite Materials: Composites Meet Sustainability. ; 5, s. 253-259
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Structural power composites, a class of multifunctional materials, have significant potential to facilitate lightweighting and accelerate widespread electrification in sustainable transportation. In civil aircraft, a bank of supercapacitors can provide power to open the doors in an emergency. Structural power composite fuselage components near the doors could provide this power and eliminate the mass and volume needed for the supercapacitors. To demonstrate this concept, we designed and manufactured a multifunctional component representative of a fuselage rib, which powered the opening and closing of a desktop scale composite aircraft door. This paper provides information about structural supercapacitor technology demonstrators, discusses the fabrication of this demonstrator and concludes by providing an insight into the future challenges that need to be addressed to realise structural power composite components.
