  • A neuromuscular electrical stimulation strategy based on muscle synergy for stroke rehabilitation
  • 2015
  • In: International IEEE/EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, NER. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781467363891 ; , s. 816-819
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent experiments have suggested that the central nervous system (CNS) makes use of muscle synergies as a neural strategy to simplify the control of a variety of movements by using a single pattern of neural command signal. This nature of muscle coordination could have great significance in the treatment and rehabilitation of upper limb impairments for hemiparetic patients post stroke. The use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for neural prosthetics or therapeutic applications has been demonstrated as a promising clinical intervention for stroke patients to recover motor function of the upper extremity. However, the existing NMES systems do not provide control methods for the patient to achieve an individualized and functional rehabilitation training. In this research work, muscle synergies from the flexionextension elbow antagonistic muscles were studied. Using motion information and EMG signals, muscle synergies were extracted using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method. Reconstructed signals obtained from the muscle synergies were then applied to the virtual arm (VA) model to test a synergy based NMES strategy. Results show close resemblance to the original elbow trajectory of normal movements and thus the feasibility to control movements in stroke patients for rehabilitation.

  • Discrimination of tactile rendering on virtual surfaces
  • 2006
  • In: ; , s. 107-108
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An array of vibrating contactors on the fingertip can provide information about virtual objects during active exploration of a virtual environment – for example, information about contact area, edges, corners and surface texture. For the operation of such a device, it is necessary to generate in real time an individually specified drive waveform for each contactor of the stimulator array. To reduce the complexity of the problem, a system has been developed at Exeter in which each drive signal is specified as a mixture of a small number of sinewaves. The aim of this study is to investigate the discrimination of the virtual textures which can be produced in this way, with the aim of developing a library of textures for use in virtual reality applications. Textures produced by mixtures of sinewaves are differentiated in terms of the mean amplitude and the spatial distribution at each sinewave frequency. Experimental questions include the number of categories (i.e., requency/amplitude/spatial combinations) that can be distinguished and the possible correspondence between virtual and real textures.

  • Edutella: A P2P Networking Infrastructure Based on RDF
  • 2002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Metadata for the World Wide Web is important, but metadata for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks is absolutely crucial. In this paper we discuss the open source project Edutella which builds upon metadata standards defined for the WWW and aims to provide an RDFbased metadata infrastructure for P2P applications, building on the recently announced JXTA Framework. We describe the goals and main services this infrastructure will provide and the architecture to connect Edutella Peers based on exchange of RDF metadata. As the query service is one of the core services of Edutella, upon which other services are built, we specify in detail the Edutella Common Data Model (ECDM) as basis for the Edutella query exchange language (RDF-QEL-i) and format implementing distributed queries over the Edutella network. Finally, we shortly discuss registration and mediation services, and introduce the prototype and application scenario for our current Edutella aware peers.

  • Measurement of H2O and OH in a Flame by Optical Frequency Comb Spectroscopy
  • 2016
  • In: Proceedings Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics. - Washington, D.C. : IEEE. - 9781943580118
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We measure broadband H2O and OH spectra in a flame using near-infrared cavity-enhanced Fourier transform optical frequency comb spectroscopy, we retrieve temperature and OH concentration, and compare water spectra to an improved line list.
