  • The upgraded DO detector
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 565:2, s. 463-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The DO experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid -argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run 1, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to DO.

  • The large observatory for x-ray timing
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 9780819496126
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final downselection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supranuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1° collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the status of the mission at the end of its Phase A study.

  • LOFT - The large observatory for x-ray timing
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819491442 ; , s. 84432D-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultradense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV, with a 10 m2 peak effective area and an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV. The WFM will operate in the same energy range as the LAD, enabling simultaneous monitoring of a few-steradian wide field of view, with an angular resolution of <5 arcmin. The LAD and WFM experiments will allow us to investigate variability from submillisecond QPO's to yearlong transient outbursts. In this paper we report the current status of the project.

  • Evidence for the antiferromagnetic ground state of Zr2TiAl : a first-principles study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 29:26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed study on the ternary Zr-based intermetallic compound Zr2TiAl has been carried out using first-principles electronic structure calculations. From the total energy calculations, we find an antiferromagnetic L1(1)-like (AFM) phase with alternating ( 1 1 1) spin-up and spin-down layers to be a stable phase among some others with magnetic moment on Ti being 1.22 mu B. The calculated magnetic exchange interaction parameters of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and subsequent Heisenberg Monte Carlo simulations confirm that this phase is the magnetic ground structure with Neel temperature between 30 and 100 K. The phonon dispersion relations further confirm the stability of the magnetic phase while the non-magnetic phase is found to have imaginary phonon modes and the same is also found from the calculated elastic constants. The magnetic moment of Ti is found to decrease under pressure eventually driving the system to the non-magnetic phase at around 46 GPa, where the phonon modes are found to be positive indicating stability of the non-magnetic phase. A continuous change in the band structure under compression leads to the corresponding change of the Fermi surface topology and electronic topological transitions (ETT) in both majority and minority spin cases, which are also evident from the calculated elastic constants and density of state calculations for the material under compression.

  • High performance metal nitrides, MN (M = Cr, Co) nanoparticles for non-aqueous hybrid supercapacitors
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advanced Powder Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-8831 .- 1568-5527. ; 26:3, s. 783-788
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, metal nitrides MN (M = Cr, Co) nanoparticles of particle size similar to 20-30 nm have been prepared under NH3 + N-2 atmosphere at relatively low temperature. The Cr-urea complex was directly converted to CrN with an intermediate formation of Cr2O3, whereas CoN was prepared from Co3O4. These compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques. The electrochemical properties were evaluated by galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical performance of the resultant MN nanoparticles showed that they can be used as potential electrode materials for non-aqueous hybrid electrochemical supercapacitors (HESCs). The MN/AC showed high specific capacitance of 75 and 37 F g (1) for M = Cr, Co, respectively when cycled at 30 mA g (1) in non-aqueous electrolyte.

  • Review of microplastic degradation : Understanding metagenomic approaches for microplastic degrading organisms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Polymer testing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9418 .- 1873-2348. ; 128, s. 108223-
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental problems caused by plastic pollution are among the most pressing issues of our time. In recent years, metagenomics has become a powerful tool for understanding the microbial communities responsible for plastic biodegradation. In this review, recent developments and trends in metagenomics are discussed, and a comprehensive overview of the metagenomic methodology, analysis, and comparison of plastic-degrading bacteria is provided. In addition, the environmental consequences of plastic degradation are discussed, such as the impact on soil, water, and air quality, as well as the potential health risks posed by ingesting and inhaling microplastics. Possible solutions to the plastic degradation problem, such as using biodegradable materials and implementing recycling programs, are also explained. This review highlights the potential impact of metagenomics on the development of sustainable solutions to plastic pollution.

  • Morphology induced large magnetic anisotropy in obliquely grown nanostructured thin film on nanopatterned substrate
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The artificial tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by manipulating surface and interface morphology is attracting widespread interest for its application in spintronic and magnetic memory devices. Here oblique angle deposition on a nanopatterned rippled substrate is presented as a novel route of inducing large in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) in magnetic thin films. For this purpose, Cobalt films and rippled SiO2 substrates have been taken as a model system for the present study. Here, nanopatterned substrates are prepared by low energy ion beam erosion (IBE), above which films are deposited obliquely along and normal to the ripple directions. A clear anisotropy in the growth behavior has been observed due to the inhomogeneous in-plane organization of adatoms in the form of columns. The increased shadowing effect in the films deposited obliquely normal to the direction of the ripple patterns causes preferential coalescence of the columns along the substrate ripples, resulting in stronger in-plane UMA in the film. This peculiarity in magnetic behavior is addressed by considering the morphological anisotropy governed by enhanced shadowing effect, the shape anisotropy and the dipolar interactions among the magnetostatically coupled ripple structure.

  • Preparation of seaweed polysaccharide based hydrophobic composite membranes for the separation of oil/water emulsion and protein
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Biological Macromolecules. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-8130 .- 1879-0003. ; 199, s. 36-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agarose is a seaweed-based polysaccharide and is widely used for the separation of nucleic acids in molecular biology. Cross-linked agarose beads are also used as solid-phase matrices in size exclusion chromatography for the separation of proteins. To find the application of agarose for the separation of oil/water emulsion and protein, herein hydrophobic derivative of the seaweed biopolymer [M-W (1.27 +/- 0.17) x 10(-5) g/mol; sulphate content (0.29 +/- 0.09) %, gel strength (2242 +/- 21) g/cm(2)] is prepared by reacting the biopolymer with stearic acid and was used to prepare a composite membrane on polyester fabric. The oil and BSA rejection performance of the composite membrane was greater than 98%. The rejection rate increased with the increase in polymer content in the respective membranes for both oil/water and protein separation. The composite membrane showed a stable oil/water emulsion and protein separation performance over a period of six hours. Due to the biodegradable nature of the major components of the membrane, it has the potential for industrial applications.
