  • Coordination of Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles: Toward safer and more efficient road transportation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1558-0792 .- 1053-5888. ; 33:6, s. 74-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While intelligent transportation systems come in many shapes and sizes, arguably the most transformational realization will be the autonomous vehicle. As such vehicles become commercially available in the coming years, first on dedicated roads and under specific conditions, and later on all public roads at all times, a phase transition will occur. Once a sufficient number of autonomous vehicles is deployed, the opportunity for explicit coordination appears. This article treats this challenging network control problem, which lies at the intersection of control theory, signal processing, and wireless communication. We provide an overview of the state of the art, while at the same time highlighting key research directions for the coming decades.

  • On the limits of digital back-propagation in the presence of transceiver noise
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:4, s. 4564-4578
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017, OSA - The Optical Society. All rights reserved. This paper investigates the impact of transceiver noise on the performance of digital back-propagation (DBP). A generalized expression to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) obtained using DBP in the presence of transceiver noise is described. This new expression correctly accounts for the nonlinear beating between the transceiver noise and the signal in the optical fiber transmission link. The transceiver noise-signal nonlinear beating has been identified as the main reason for the discrepancy between predicted and practical performance of DBP; which has not been previously suggested. This nonlinear beating has been included in the GN model, allowing DBP gains in practical systems to be predicted analytically. Experiments and split-step simulations with and without polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in the transmission link have been performed. The results show that the impact of transceiver noise greatly outweighs that of PMD, and the analytical expressions are confirmed by the numerical simulations.

  • Communication analysis for centralized intersection crossing coordination
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proc. 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems. - 9781479958634 ; , s. 813-818
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coordination of autonomous cooperative vehicles is an important challenge for future intelligent transportation systems. In particular, coordination to cross intersections captures the inherent and connected challenges among control and communication. While intersection coordination and vehicular wireless communication have both received extensive treatment in their respective communities, few works consider their interaction. We provide a communication system analysis for the specific problem of centralized intersection crossing coordination, leading to design guidelines for both uplink (whereby vehicles send intentions to the central controller) and downlink (where the controller prescribes vehicles of safe control actions).

  • An approximate solution to the optimal coordination problem for autonomous vehicles at intersections
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: American Control Conference. - 0743-1619. - 9781479917730 ; 2015, s. 763-768
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we address the problem of optimal and safe coordination of autonomous vehicles through a traffic intersection. We state the problem as a finite time, constrained optimal control problem, a combinatorial optimization problem that is difficult to solve in real-time. A low complexity computational scheme is proposed, based on a hierarchical decomposition of the original optimal control formulation, where a central coordination problem is solved together with a number of local optimal control problems for each vehicle. We show how the proposed decomposition allows a reduction of the complexity of the central problem, provided that approximated parametric solutions of the local problems are available beforehand. We derive conditions for the construction of the parametric approximations and demonstrate the method with a numerical example.

  • Cooperative receding horizon conflict resolution at traffic intersections
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. - 0743-1546 .- 2576-2370. ; 2015-February, s. 2932-2937
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we consider the problem of coordinating a number of vehicles crossing a traffic intersection. The proposed solution is based on a receding horizon formulation with a pre-defined decision order. In this approach, local problems are formulated for each vehicle, which are divided into a finite-time optimal control problem, where collision avoidance is enforced as terminal constraints, and an infinite horizon control problem, which can be solved offline. Feasibility conditions for a given decision sequence are also derived and simulation results are presented.

  • Microstructure control during deposition and post-treatment to optimize mechanical properties of wire-arc additively manufactured 17-4 PH stainless steel
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Additive Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-8604 .- 2214-7810. ; 58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solidification and microstructural evolution during deposition, as well as the structural evolution during post heat treatment, determine the mechanical properties of wire-arc additively manufactured maraging stainless steels. In the present work, we tune the austenite reversion and nanoscale precipitation during post heat treat-ment and achieve an excellent combination of strength and ductility (ultimate tensile strength-1340 MPa and uniform elongation-10.5 %). The structural evolution is studied through computational thermodynamics, electron microscopy, in situ small-angle neutron scattering, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The as-built microstructure is composed of mainly martensite and retained austenite (-30 vol%) together with a minor fraction of delta-ferrite, M23C6, Nb(C, N), spherical and ellipsoidal Cu precipitates and some inclusions. The presence of these phases cannot be fully predicted by the Scheil-Gulliver model due to the complicated thermal history and non-homogenous elemental distribution. The reverted austenite formed during the post heat treatments has high stability and fine grain size (-1 mu m), which contributes to the excellent ductility, while the nanoscale precipi-tation hardening contributes to the achieved high strength.

  • BIDS apps: Improving ease of use, accessibility, and reproducibility of neuroimaging data analysis methods
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PloS Computational Biology. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-734X .- 1553-7358. ; 13:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rate of progress in human neurosciences is limited by the inability to easily apply a wide range of analysis methods to the plethora of different datasets acquired in labs around the world. In this work, we introduce a framework for creating, testing, versioning and archiving portable applications for analyzing neuroimaging data organized and described in compliance with the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS). The portability of these applications (BIDS Apps) is achieved by using container technologies that encapsulate all binary and other dependencies in one convenient package. BIDS Apps run on all three major operating systems with no need for complex setup and configuration and thanks to the comprehensiveness of the BIDS standard they require little manual user input. Previous containerized data processing solutions were limited to single user environments and not compatible with most multi-tenant High Performance Computing systems. BIDS Apps overcome this limitation by taking advantage of the Singularity container technology. As a proof of concept, this work is accompanied by 22 ready to use BIDS Apps, packaging a diverse set of commonly used neuroimaging algorithms.

  • Uranus Pathfinder : exploring the origins and evolution of Ice Giant planets
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Experimental astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 33:2-3, s. 753-791
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The "Ice Giants" Uranus and Neptune are a different class of planet compared to Jupiter and Saturn. Studying these objects is important for furthering our understanding of the formation and evolution of the planets, and unravelling the fundamental physical and chemical processes in the Solar System. The importance of filling these gaps in our knowledge of the Solar System is particularly acute when trying to apply our understanding to the numerous planetary systems that have been discovered around other stars. The Uranus Pathfinder (UP) mission thus represents the quintessential aspects of the objectives of the European planetary community as expressed in ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025. UP was proposed to the European Space Agency's M3 call for medium-class missions in 2010 and proposed to be the first orbiter of an Ice Giant planet. As the most accessible Ice Giant within the M-class mission envelope Uranus was identified as the mission target. Although not selected for this call the UP mission concept provides a baseline framework for the exploration of Uranus with existing low-cost platforms and underlines the need to develop power sources suitable for the outer Solar System. The UP science case is based around exploring the origins, evolution, and processes at work in Ice Giant planetary systems. Three broad themes were identified: (1) Uranus as an Ice Giant, (2) An Ice Giant planetary system, and (3) An asymmetric magnetosphere. Due to the long interplanetary transfer from Earth to Uranus a significant cruise-phase science theme was also developed. The UP mission concept calls for the use of a Mars Express/Rosetta-type platform to launch on a Soyuz-Fregat in 2021 and entering into an eccentric polar orbit around Uranus in the 2036-2037 timeframe. The science payload has a strong heritage in Europe and beyond and requires no significant technology developments.

  • Survey and Evaluation of Tone Mapping Operators for HDR-video
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Siggraph 2013 Talks. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Press. - 9781450323444
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work presents a survey and a user evaluation of tone mapping operators (TMOs) for high dynamic range (HDR) video, i.e. TMOs that explicitly include a temporal model for processing of variations in the input HDR images in the time domain. The main motivations behind this work is that: robust tone mapping is one of the key aspects of HDR imaging [Reinhard et al. 2006]; recent developments in sensor and computing technologies have now made it possible to capture HDR-video, e.g. [Unger and Gustavson 2007; Tocci et al. 2011]; and, as shown by our survey, tone mapping for HDR video poses a set of completely new challenges compared to tone mapping for still HDR images. Furthermore, video tone mapping, though less studied, is highly important for a multitude of applications including gaming, cameras in mobile devices, adaptive display devices and movie post-processing. Our survey is meant to summarize the state-of-the-art in video tonemapping and, as exemplified in Figure 1 (right), analyze differences in their response to temporal variations. In contrast to other studies, we evaluate TMOs performance according to their actual intent, such as producing the image that best resembles the real world scene, that subjectively looks best to the viewer, or fulfills a certain artistic requirement. The unique strength of this work is that we use real high quality HDR video sequences, see Figure 1 (left), as opposed to synthetic images or footage generated from still HDR images.

  • Continuous Data-driven Software Engineering : Towards a Research Agenda
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Notes. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0163-5948 .- 1943-5843. ; 44:3, s. 60-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid pace with which software needs to be built, together with the increasing need to evaluate changes for end users both quantitatively and qualitatively calls for novel software engineering approaches that focus on short release cycles, continuous deployment and delivery, experiment-driven feature development, feedback from users, and rapid tool-assisted feedback to developers. To realize these approaches there is a need for research and innovation with respect to automation and tooling, and furthermore for research into the organizational changes that support flexible data-driven decision-making in the development lifecycle. Most importantly, deep synergies are needed between software engineers, managers, and data scientists. This paper reports on the results of the joint 5th International Workshop on Rapid Continuous Software Engineering (RCoSE 2019) and the 1st International Workshop on Data-Driven Decisions, Experimentation and Evolution (DDrEE 2019), which focuses on the challenges and potential solutions in the area of continuous data-driven software engineering.
