  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Middle Eastern Literatures. - 1475-262X. ; 9:2, s. 179-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses some aspects of the 'problem of identity' explored in the novel al-Rish (1990) by the Syrian-born Kurdish writer Salim Barakat (b. 1951), against the background of the typology of history suggested in Bernard Lewis's "History: remembered, recovered, invented" (1975). As a member of a minority community denied their full cultural and political rights, Barakat is arguably particularly sensitive both to the constructed nature of history and identity, and to how the process of remembering, discovering/recovering and inventing works. The article presents a detailed analysis of al-Rish, concluding that the 'problem of identity' is never solved in the work: rather, the novel presents us with an array of partly conflicting, partly complementary identities, while the characters remain caught in a quest for a stable identity that disintegrates like a mirage as they approach it.

  • In the Presence of Absence: Mahmoud Darwish's Testament
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies. - 0806-198X. ; 8:2008, s. 11-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish is well known for his intertextual playfulness and inventiveness, and indeed, in one of his last books, Fi Hadrat al-ghiyab (In the Presence of Absence, 2006) he alludes to classical Arabic poetry, the Quran and his own previous oeuvre. Drawing on a celebrated qasida by the Umayyad poet Malik Ibn al-Rayb as his model, Darwish composed this work as a funeral speech for himself. Essentially, it is an oration in prose, but snatches of poetry also appear in a stylistic pattern where rhetorical figures abound. Speaking from the barzakh between life and death, the poet reflects on his wordly existence from cradle to grave. Published less than two years before Darwish death in August 2008, the text has the double character of prediction and testament. The thesis of this article is that the death of the author adds meaning to it not by his absence, but paradoxically, by his increased presence as an unavoidable point of reference and source of identification for the reader.

  • Searching for the Navel: Love Voices in the Poetry of Adonis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Desire, Pleasure and the Taboo: New Voices and Freedom of Expression in Contemporary Arabic Literature / edited by Sobhi Boustani [and others].. - Pisa : Fabrizio Serra Editore. - 9788862277020 ; , s. 169-183
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I examine a work of love poetry by one of the key figures of Arab modernism, Adonis (b. 1930). The aim is to study the textual voices in his late collection "Awwal al-jasad aakhir al-baHr" (Beginning of the Body End of the Sea, 2003) and compare them with those that speak in his earlier works. Explicit representations of sexual desire and pleasure have been a standing feature of Adonis's poetry throughout his career. I argue that although the poet expresses some fresh visions and original emotions in "Awwal al-jasad", the language, imagery and themes echo previous texts remarkably much. Ultimately this continuity in Adonis's production leads me to question the notion that sexual outspokenness is an altogether new phenomenon in modern Arabic literature and suggest some relevant historical links.
