  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • Metabolic engineering of Corynebacterium glutamicum for enhanced production of 5-aminovaleric acid
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Microbial Cell Factories. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1475-2859. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: 5-Aminovaleric acid (5AVA) is an important five-carbon platform chemical that can be used for the synthesis of polymers and other chemicals of industrial interest. Enzymatic conversion of l-lysine to 5AVA has been achieved by employing lysine 2-monooxygenase encoded by the davB gene and 5-aminovaleramidase encoded by the davA gene. Additionally, a recombinant Escherichia coli strain expressing the davB and davA genes has been developed for bioconversion of l-lysine to 5AVA. To use glucose and xylose derived from lignocellulosic biomass as substrates, rather than l-lysine as a substrate, we previously examined direct fermentative production of 5AVA from glucose by metabolically engineered E. coli strains. However, the yield and productivity of 5AVA achieved by recombinant E. coli strains remain very low. Thus, Corynebacterium glutamicum, a highly efficient l-lysine producing microorganism, should be useful in the development of direct fermentative production of 5AVA using l-lysine as a precursor for 5AVA. Here, we report the development of metabolically engineered C. glutamicum strains for enhanced fermentative production of 5AVA from glucose. Results: Various expression vectors containing different promoters and origins of replication were examined for optimal expression of Pseudomonas putida davB and davA genes encoding lysine 2-monooxygenase and delta-aminovaleramidase, respectively. Among them, expression of the C. glutamicum codon-optimized davA gene fused with His 6 -Tag at its N-Terminal and the davB gene as an operon under a strong synthetic H 36 promoter (plasmid p36davAB3) in C. glutamicum enabled the most efficient production of 5AVA. Flask culture and fed-batch culture of this strain produced 6.9 and 19.7 g/L (together with 11.9 g/L glutaric acid as major byproduct) of 5AVA, respectively. Homology modeling suggested that endogenous gamma-aminobutyrate aminotransferase encoded by the gabT gene might be responsible for the conversion of 5AVA to glutaric acid in recombinant C. glutamicum. Fed-batch culture of a C. glutamicum gabT mutant-harboring p36davAB3 produced 33.1 g/L 5AVA with much reduced (2.0 g/L) production of glutaric acid. Conclusions:Corynebacterium glutamicum was successfully engineered to produce 5AVA from glucose by optimizing the expression of two key enzymes, lysine 2-monooxygenase and delta-aminovaleramidase. In addition, production of glutaric acid, a major byproduct, was significantly reduced by employing C. glutamicum gabT mutant as a host strain. The metabolically engineered C. glutamicum strains developed in this study should be useful for enhanced fermentative production of the novel C5 platform chemical 5AVA from renewable resources.

  • Magnesium- and intermetallic alloys-based hydrides for energy storage : modelling, synthesis and properties
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Progress in Energy. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 2516-1083. ; 4:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrides based on magnesium and intermetallic compounds provide a viable solution to the challenge of energy storage from renewable sources, thanks to their ability to absorb and desorb hydrogen in a reversible way with a proper tuning of pressure and temperature conditions. Therefore, they are expected to play an important role in the clean energy transition and in the deployment of hydrogen as an efficient energy vector. This review, by experts of Task 40 'Energy Storage and Conversion based on Hydrogen' of the Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Programme of the International Energy Agency, reports on the latest activities of the working group 'Magnesium- and Intermetallic alloys-based Hydrides for Energy Storage'. The following topics are covered by the review: multiscale modelling of hydrides and hydrogen sorption mechanisms; synthesis and processing techniques; catalysts for hydrogen sorption in Mg; Mg-based nanostructures and new compounds; hydrides based on intermetallic TiFe alloys, high entropy alloys, Laves phases, and Pd-containing alloys. Finally, an outlook is presented on current worldwide investments and future research directions for hydrogen-based energy storage.

  • On the breakaway oxidation of Fe9Cr1Mo steel in high pressure CO2
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 130, s. 361-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fundamental insights into the mechanism of breakaway oxidation in Fe9Cr1Mo steel are deduced, through advanced characterisation and modelling. Degradation at 600 °C/∼42 bar CO2 for ∼20,000 h is emphasised: conditions relevant to components such as the finned superheater tubes used for advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors. It is shown that such conditions are sufficient to cause carbon saturation of the metallic substrate, as confirmed by direct observation of extensive carbide precipitation but also numerical analysis of the carbon transport. Thus the observation of graphite precipitation close to the scale/metal interface is rationalised. Nonetheless, the activity of carbon at the scale/metal interface does not reach unity – with respect to graphite – at time zero. A modelling method is proposed which accounts for this kinetic retardation of the attack; this can be used to interpolate across the regimes within which breakaway oxidation is prevalent. It is a plausible model for extrapolation to the lower temperatures relevant to service conditions and is suitable for lifetime estimation – so-called ‘remnant life analysis’ – of such safety-critical components when prone to this form of attack.

  • Studies of wetting characteristics of liquid Fe-Cr alloys on oxide substrates by sessile drop technique
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ironmaking & steelmaking. - 0301-9233 .- 1743-2812. ; 37:7, s. 512-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate the wetting characteristics of three different oxide substrates (alumina, magnesia and dolomite) in order to examine the work of adhesion of Fe-Cr alloys on these substrates. The contact angle of a liquid drop (Fe-Cr alloy) on the oxide substrates was investigated at 1823 K under a H-2 atmosphere by the sessile drop technique. The contact angle slightly decreased on the alumina and dolomite substrates with increasing chromium concentration, but did not change as much on the magnesia substrate. Among the tested substrates, alumina exhibited the highest contact angle and dolomite exhibited the lowest one. Accordingly, dolomite had the strongest work of adhesion, which was in agreement with the observations in the practical process.

  • Smart shipyard platform with computational shipyard dynamics and its application to a forming Shop
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: SNAME Maritime Convention 2019, SMC 2019. - : Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While leading companies in the manufacturing industry are doing their best to implement smart factories along with the wave of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, shipbuilding companies still seem to be a bit distant from the smart factories, due to the characteristics of the industry. In this study, smart shipbuilding platform is defined by studying the necessary elements for realizing smart shipyard in shipbuilding industry, and a forming shop is presented as an example to which the smart shipyard platform is realized and applied. To this end, the purpose of implementing the smart shipyard is discussed first and then the factors necessary to achieve the purpose are identified. These elements are grouped together into one system with the computational shipyard dynamics to define the smart shipyard platform. The platform is then applied to an actual factory of a shipyard to verify its effectiveness.

  • Exploring the usefulness of scenario archetypes in science-policy processes : experience across IPBES assessments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Society. - 1708-3087. ; 24:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scenario analyses have been used in multiple science-policy assessments to better understand complex plausible futures. Scenario archetype approaches are based on the fact that many future scenarios have similar underlying storylines, assumptions, and trends in drivers of change, which allows for grouping of scenarios into typologies, or archetypes, facilitating comparisons between a large range of studies. The use of scenario archetypes in environmental assessments foregrounds important policy questions and can be used to codesign interventions tackling future sustainability issues. Recently, scenario archetypes were used in four regional assessments and one ongoing global assessment within the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The aim of these assessments was to provide decision makers with policy-relevant knowledge about the state of biodiversity, ecosystems, and the contributions they provide to people. This paper reflects on the usefulness of the scenario archetype approach within science-policy processes, drawing on the experience from the IPBES assessments. Using a thematic analysis of (a) survey data collected from experts involved in the archetype analyses across IPBES assessments, (b) notes from IPBES workshops, and (c) regional assessment chapter texts, we synthesize the benefits, challenges, and frontiers of applying the scenario archetype approach in a science-policy process. Scenario archetypes were perceived to allow syntheses of large amounts of information for scientific, practice-, and policy-related purposes, streamline key messages from multiple scenario studies, and facilitate communication of them to end users. In terms of challenges, they were perceived as subjective in their interpretation, oversimplifying information, having a limited applicability across scales, and concealing contextual information and novel narratives. Finally, our results highlight what methodologies, applications, and frontiers in archetype-based research should be explored in the future. These advances can assist the design of future large-scale sustainability-related assessment processes, aiming to better support decisions and interventions for equitable and sustainable futures.

  • Assessment of corrosive attack of Fe9Cr1Mo alloys in pressurised CO2 for prediction of breakaway oxidation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-938X .- 1879-0496. ; 222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To provide clarity on the poorly-understood mechanism of breakaway oxidation, corrosion of Fe9Cr1Mo steel in pressurised CO2 is quantified and modelled. The temperature range 400-640 degrees C, relevant to nuclear power plants, is emphasised. Attack is in the form of combined oxide scale growth and internal carburisation of the metal. Carbon activity in the metal at its surface exhibits a strong time dependence consistent with the kinetically-limited transport of carbon due to the slow Boudouard reaction. Breakaway is associated with the approach to saturation of the steel with respect to carbon. Diffusion modelling agrees well with steel carbide precipitation observations.

  • Topological quantum properties of chiral crystals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Materials. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 1476-1122 .- 1476-4660. ; 17:11, s. 978-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chiral crystals are materials with a lattice structure that has a well-defined handedness due to the lack of inversion, mirror or other roto-inversion symmetries. Although it has been shown that the presence of crystalline symmetries can protect topological band crossings, the topological electronic properties of chiral crystals remain largely uncharacterized. Here we show that Kramers-Weyl fermions are a universal topological electronic property of all non-magnetic chiral crystals with spin-orbit coupling and are guaranteed by structural chirality, lattice translation and time-reversal symmetry. Unlike conventional Weyl fermions, they appear at time-reversal-invariant momenta. We identify representative chiral materials in 33 of the 65 chiral space groups in which Kramers-Weyl fermions are relevant to the low-energy physics. We determine that all point-like nodal degeneracies in non-magnetic chiral crystals with relevant spin-orbit coupling carry non-trivial Chern numbers. Kramers-Weyl materials can exhibit a monopole-like electron spin texture and topologically non-trivial bulk Fermi surfaces over an unusually large energy window.
