  • Two genome-wide association studies of aggressive prostate cancer implicate putative prostate tumor suppressor gene DAB2IP
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of the National Cancer Institute. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0027-8874 .- 1460-2105. ; 99:24, s. 1836-1844
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The consistent finding of a genetic susceptibility to prostate cancer suggests that there are germline sequence variants predisposing individuals to this disease. These variants could be useful in screening and treatment. Methods: We performed an exploratory genome-wide association scan in 498 men with aggressive prostate cancer and 494 control subjects selected from a population-based case-control study in Sweden. We combined the results of this scan with those for aggressive prostate cancer from the publicly available Cancer Genetic Markers of Susceptibility (CGEMS) Study. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that showed statistically significant associations with the risk of aggressive prostate cancer based on two-sided allele tests were tested for their association with aggressive prostate cancer in two independent study populations composed of individuals of European or African American descent using one-sided tests and the genetic model (dominant or additive) associated with the lowest value in the exploratory study. Results: Among the approximately 60000 SNPs that were common to our study and CGEMS, we identified seven that had a similar (positive or negative) and statistically significant (P<.01) association with the risk of aggressive prostate cancer in both studies. Analysis of the distribution of these SNPs among 1032 prostate cancer patients and 571 control subjects of European descent indicated that one, rs1571801, located in the DAB2IP gene, which encodes a novel Ras GTPase-activating protein and putative prostate tumor suppressor, was associated with aggressive prostate cancer (one-sided P value =. 004). The association was also statistically significant in an African American study population that included 210 prostate cancer patients and 346 control subjects (one-sided P value =. 02). Conclusion: A genetic variant in DAB2IP may be associated with the risk of aggressive prostate cancer and should be evaluated further.

  • Effects of uncertainties on the capacity and operation of an integrated energy system
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2213-1388 .- 2213-1396. ; 48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uncertainty is a common and critical problem for planning the capacity and operation of integrated energy systems (IESs). This study evaluates the effects of uncertainties on the capacity and operation of an IES. To this aim, system planning and operation with uncertainties are optimized by a two-stage stochastic programming model and compared with a referencing deterministic case. Specifically, the uncertainties of photovoltaic (PV) generation and energy demand are investigated. Regarding system capacity, a larger energy storage capacity is needed to accommodate a higher uncertainty. The superimposed uncertainties have a higher effect on system capacity than the sum of the effect of each uncertainty. The uncertainty of energy demand has a higher impact than the uncertainty of PV generation. Regarding system operation, the increase in operation cost is smaller than the increase in investment cost and total cost. In addition, the average flexibility provided by the energy storage increases with uncertainty and uncertainties affect the change rate for power charging/discharging of the electric energy storage. Regarding the effect on the grid, the uncertainties increase not only the magnitude of ramping-rate, but also the frequency of power-dispatch.

  • Forecasting the occurrence of extreme electricity prices using a multivariate logistic regression model
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme electricity prices occur with a higher frequency and a larger magnitude in recent years. Accurate forecasting of the occurrence of extreme prices is of great concern to market operators and participants. This paper aims to forecast the occurrence probability of day-ahead extremely low and high electricity prices and investigate the relative importance of different influencing variables. The data obtained from the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) were employed, including historical prices (one day before and one week before), reserve capacity, load demand, variable renewable energy (VRE) proportion and interconnector flow. A Multivariate Logistic Regression (MLgR) model was proposed, which showed good forecasting capability in terms of model fitness and classification accuracy with different thresholds of extreme prices. In addition, the performance of the MLgR model was verified by comparing with two other models, i.e., Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Radical Basis Function (RBF) neural network. Relative importance analysis was performed to quantify of the contribution of the variables. The proposed method enriches the theories of electricity price forecast and advances the understanding of the dynamics of extreme prices. By applying the model in practice, it will contribute to promoting the management of operation and establishment of a robust energy market.

  • Carbon sequestration via shellfish farming : A potential negative emissions technology
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Renewable & sustainable energy reviews. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1364-0321 .- 1879-0690. ; 171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Negative emission technologies driven by nature with less energy input, lower costs, and long carbon storage capacities are essential for meeting ambitious global carbon mitigation goals. This paper evaluates the carbon sequestration potential of bivalve shellfish farming because its sequestration process is driven by nature, and it is cost-effective and energy efficient. The carbon in shells and the carbon that enters sediments via bio-deposition are long-lived forms of carbon. Using China as a case study, a preliminary estimation suggests that the carbon sequestration efficiency and intensity of cultivated shellfishes are much higher than those of artificial forests. In China, approximately 6.23 Mt CO2-eq a−1 was fixed via net carbon sequestration during shellfish growth from 2015 to 2019. In addition, the farmed shellfishes provided 0.37 Mt of harvested protein, and approximately 37.39 Mt CO2-eq a-1 were reduced compared to the same amount of protein provided by beef, and thus, shellfish farming has the win-win benefits of carbon sequestration and high-quality food provision. More importantly, a total of 5.64 Gt CO2-eq, accounting for 17.63% of the total emissions in 2020, can be potentially sequestrated at the global scale under the world's largest farming area scenario.

  • Dynamic operating characteristics of a compressed CO2 energy storage system
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time, the study investigated the dynamic performances of a compressed CO2 energy storage (CCES) system based on a dynamic model, which was validated using experimental data. The dynamic round-trip efficiency (RTE) of a scaled-up CCES system in two typical operation modes was studied, including Mode 1: the basic operation mode, where the inlet pressure of the compressor or the expander is not controlled, and Mode 2: the controlled operation mode, where the capacity for compression or expansion is regulated to remain constant. Dynamic RTE varies in the range 16.7%-56.7% in various operation modes. A new key performance indicator, utilization of tank (UOT), was defined to reflect how much working gas is used in a charging or a discharging process. In general, high charging and high discharging capacities lead to low UOTs and low RTEs. Moreover, the comparison between the dynamic model and its equivalent steady-state model showed a significant difference in system performances. The RTE of the steady-state model reaches 68.5%, which is much higher than the corresponding dynamic RTE of 55.3%. © 2023

  • Optimal planning of intra-city public charging stations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intra-city Public Charging Stations (PCSs) play a crucial role in promoting the mass deployment of Electric Vehicles (EVs). To motivate the investment on PCSs, this work proposes a novel framework to find the optimal location and size of PCSs, which can maximize the benefit of the investment. The impacts of charging behaviors and urban land uses on the income of PCSs are taken into account. An agent-based trip chain model is used to represent the travel and charging patterns of EV owners. A cell-based geographic partition method based on Geographic Information System is employed to reflect the influence of land use on the dynamic and stochastic nature of EV charging behaviors. Based on the distributed charging demand, the optimal location and size of PCSs are determined by mixed-integer linear programming. Västerås, a Swedish city, is used as a case study to demonstrate the model's effectiveness. It is found that the charging demand served by a PCS is critical to its profitability, which is greatly affected by the charging behavior of drivers, the location and the service range of PCS. Moreover, charging price is another significant factor impacting profitability, and consequently the competitiveness of slow and fast PCSs.

  • Statistical analysis of energy consumption patterns on the heat demand of buildings in district heating systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Energy and Buildings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7788 .- 1872-6178. ; 85, s. 664-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precise prediction of heat demand is crucial for optimising district heating (DH) systems. Energy consumption patterns (ECPs) represent a key parameter in developing a good mathematical model to predict heat demand. This study quantitatively investigated the impacts of ECPs on heat consumption. Two key factors, namely, time and type of buildings, were used to reflect various ECPs in DH systems, and a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) was developed to examine their impacts on heat consumption. The model was trained and validated using the measured data from a real DH system. Results show that the factor of time does not represent a good reflection of ECP. In contrast, categorising buildings according to their function is an effective way to reflect ECPs. Based on the defined building types, i.e., commercial, apartment and office, the average absolute deviation of the predicted heat load was about 4-8%.

  • Mining urban sustainable performance : Spatio-temporal emission potential changes of urban transit buses in post-COVID-19 future
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emission benefits of transit buses depend on ridership. Declines in ridership caused by COVID-19 leads uncertainty about the emission reduction capacity of buses. This paper provides a method framework for analyzing spatio-temporal emission patterns of buses in combination with real-time ridership and potential emission changes in the post-COVID-19 future. Based on GPS trajectory and Smart Card data of 2056 buses from 278 routes covering 1.5 million ridership in Qingdao, China, spatio-temporal emissions characteristics of buses are studied. 7589 taxis with 0.2 million passengers’ trips are used for acquiring private cars’ emissions to evaluate the emissions difference between buses and cars. Empirical results show that the average difference between buses and cars with 2 persons can reach up to 117 g/km-person during 7:00–8:59 and 115 g/km-person during 17:00–18:59. However, buses have various emission benefits around the city at different periods. A double increase in emissions during non-rush hours can be observed compared with rush hours. 224 online survey data are used to study the potential ridership reduction trend in post-COVID-19. Results show that 56.3% of respondents would decrease the usage of buses in the post-COVID-19 future. Based on this figure, our analysis shows that per kilometer-person emissions of buses are higher than cars during non-rush hours, however, still lower than cars during rush hours. We conclude that when ridership reduces by more than 40%, buses cannot be “greener” travel modal than cars as before. Finally, several feasible policies are suggested for this potential challenge. Our study provides convincing evidence for understanding the emission patterns of buses, to support better buses investment decisions and promotion on eco-friendly public transport service in the post-COVID-19 future.
