  • 1060 nm VCSELs for long-reach optical interconnects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9912 .- 1068-5200. ; 44, s. 36-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reach extension of high capacity optical interconnects based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and multimode fibers (MMFs), as needed for large-scale data centers, would benefit from high-speed GaAs-based VCSELs at 1060 nm. At this wavelength, the chromatic dispersion and attenuation of the optical fiber are much reduced in comparison with 850 nm. We present single and multimode 1060 nm VCSELs based on designs derived partly from our high-speed 850 nm VCSEL designs. The single-mode VCSEL, with a modulation bandwidth exceeding 22 GHz, supports back-to-back data rates up to 50 Gbps at 25 °C and 40 Gbps at 85 °C under binary NRZ (OOK) modulation. Using mode-selective launch, we demonstrate error-free 25 Gbps transmission over 1000 m of 1060 nm optimized MMF. Higher data rates and/or longer distances will be possible with equalization, forward-error-correction, and/or multilevel modulation.

  • 1060 nm Single-Mode VCSEL and Single-Mode Fiber Links for Long-Reach Optical Interconnects
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 37:13, s. 2963-2969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the use of a 1060 nm single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a 1060 nm single-mode fiber as a competitive single-mode technology for cost-and power-efficient long-reach optical interconnects. Error-free transmission (bit error rate < 10-12) over 2 km is demonstrated at bitrates up to 40 Gb/s under on-off keying non-return-to-zero (OOK-NRZ) modulation, without equalization, forward-error correction, or other forms of digital signal processing. The VCSEL is extensively characterized with respect to its static and dynamic performances, including the power-voltage-current characteristics, spectral characteristics, beam divergence, modulation response, relative intensity noise, and frequency chirp. The measured dependence of power penalty on fiber length is consistent with an analysis of chirp-induced pulse compression and broadening along the negative chromatic dispersion fiber.

  • Artificial intelligence for diagnosis and Gleason grading of prostate cancer: the PANDA challenge
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-170X .- 1078-8956. ; 28:21, s. 154-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise for diagnosing prostate cancer in biopsies. However, results have been limited to individual studies, lacking validation in multinational settings. Competitions have been shown to be accelerators for medical imaging innovations, but their impact is hindered by lack of reproducibility and independent validation. With this in mind, we organized the PANDA challenge—the largest histopathology competition to date, joined by 1,290 developers—to catalyze development of reproducible AI algorithms for Gleason grading using 10,616 digitized prostate biopsies. We validated that a diverse set of submitted algorithms reached pathologist-level performance on independent cross-continental cohorts, fully blinded to the algorithm developers. On United States and European external validation sets, the algorithms achieved agreements of 0.862 (quadratically weighted κ, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.840–0.884) and 0.868 (95% CI, 0.835–0.900) with expert uropathologists. Successful generalization across different patient populations, laboratories and reference standards, achieved by a variety of algorithmic approaches, warrants evaluating AI-based Gleason grading in prospective clinical trials.

  • Foaming of polypropylene glycols and glycol/MIBC mixtures
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Minerals Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0892-6875 .- 1872-9444. ; 18, s. 179-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surface tension and foamability of a series of polypropylene glycols (PPG) with average molecular weights (MW) ranging from 200 to 2000 g mol-1 and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values ranging from 10.4 to 5.8 were compared to methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 4-methyl-2-pentanol (MW102 g mol-1 and HLB 6.1). Experiments were carried out using a modified Bikermann column in which the foam heights were determined at a range of gas flow rates and retention times were calculated at different foamer concentrations. These studies show the six-carbon polypropylene glycol (PPG400) with HLB value of 9.7 is an unusually strong frother. Since many industrial foamers/frothers commonly contain a mixture of chemical types, we have also studied the foaming behaviour of mixed systems of PPGs and MIBC at a range of concentrations. The foaming data indicated that a synergistic effect occurred for several of the mixed systems with differences in HLB values, which resulted in an increase in foam height compared to the performance of the individual systems. Dynamic surface tension measurements, determined in the short time span range of 0.1–10 s, correlated with the synergistic effect and it was found that the blended systems gave a higher dynamic surface tension gradient compared to the individual PPGs. It could be suggested that the mixed foamer (containing high HLB and low HLB value components) produce closed packed, molecular cohesive films at the air/solution interface giving greater surface elasticity, which appeared to increase foamability

  • Improved mechanical properties of a Ti-48Al alloy processed by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Today Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-4928. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bulk Ti-48Al alloy samples were prepared by the high energy ball milling (HBM) of elemental powders, followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) of the HBM processed powders. The microstructure, phase evolution and mechanical properties of the bulk alloy were studied. The resulting TiAl + Ti3Al two phase alloy possessed an equiaxed fine grain structure, unlike the usual lamellar structure produced by arc melting. The process parameters of HBM and SPS, e.g., milling speed, milling time and sintering temperature were used to tune the phase fraction, microstructure, and grain size. A very high nanohardness of up to ∼12 GPa was obtained, ∼2.4 times higher than the corresponding value of the as-cast counterpart. The combined influence of powder size reduction during HBM, high Ti3Al phase fraction and microstructural development during SPS resulted in higher hardness, wear resistance and yield pressure. Thus, a HBM+SPS processing approach is a promising processing route for the manufacture of high hardness bulk TiAl alloys.

  • Cakes That Bake Cakes: Dynamic Computation in CakeML
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages. - 2475-1421. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have extended the verified CakeML compiler with a new language primitive, Eval, which permits evaluation of new CakeML syntax at runtime. This new implementation supports an ambitious form of compilation at runtime and dynamic execution, where the original and dynamically added code can share (higher-order) values and recursively call each other. This is, to our knowledge, the first verified run-Time environment capable of supporting a standard LCF-style theorem prover design. Modifying the modern CakeML compiler pipeline and proofs to support a dynamic computation semantics was an extensive project. We review the design decisions, proof techniques, and proof engineering lessons from the project, and highlight some unexpected complications.
