  • Europe ambivalent on biotechnology
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nature. - London : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 387, s. 845-847
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Eurobarometer on Biotechnology (46.1) was conducted during October and November 1996. The survey conducted in each EU (European Union) country used a multi-stage random sampling procedure and provided a statistically representative sample of national residents aged 15 and over. The total sample within the EU was 16,246 respondents (about 1,000 per EU country). The survey questionnaire was designed by the authors as part of a larger study involving the comparative analysis of public perceptions, media coverage and public policy in relation to biotechnology from 1973 to the present.

  • Performance Comparison of Multi-Agent Middleware Platforms for Wireless Sensor Networks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Sensors Journal. - Piscataway, N.J. : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 1530-437X .- 1558-1748. ; 18:7, s. 3039-3049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the numerous possible applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), there is a key disadvantage related to the high complexity in programming WSNs, which is a result of their distributed and built-in features. To overcome this shortcoming, software agents have been identified as a suitable programming paradigm. The agent-based approach commonly uses a middleware for the execution of the software agents. In this regard, the present paper aims at comparing Java-based agent middleware platforms in their performance for the WSN application domain. Experiments were performed to analyze two versions of tracking applications, based on different agent models implemented for a given set of middleware platforms that support programming at a high-level of abstraction. The results highlight the differences in the resource consumption (CPU, memory, and energy) and in the communication overhead, providing an indication of suitability for each type of analyzed middleware, considering specific concerns while developing WSN applications. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

  • Analyzing different levels of geographic context awareness in agent ferrying over VANETs
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2011 ACM Symposium on Applied Computing. - New York : ACM Press. - 9781450301138 ; , s. 413-418
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of mobile software agents is a promising approach to implement services over ad hoc networks. This paper presents an analysis of mobile autonomous agents with different degrees of intelligence that allow them to make usage of the positioning information of vehicle carried sensor nodes with different depth of complexity, considering the nodes’ current and future locations. The agents’ intelligence is used to decide their movement during opportunistic connections among the nodes in order to accomplish missions. In this work, the analysis is done over an application of “virtual sensors”, implemented by services provided by the mobile agents. These agents run on top of an infrastructure-less Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET). Simulation results are presented and discussed to support the proposed ideas.

  • Coordination Mechanism and Customizable Hardware Platform to Provide Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks Support
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an effort to support emerging Wireless Sensor Networks applications composed by different types of sensor nodes. The work is composed by two parts, in which the first is dedicated to provide cooperation abilities to sensor nodes, while the second is a customizable hardware platform intended to provide different types of sensor nodes, from those more resource constrained up to the resource-rich ones. A description of a testbed demonstra- tor of the proposed system is provided and comparisons with previous published simulation results denote the feasibility of the proposal.

  • A triple bottom line construct and reasons for implementing sustainable business practices in companies and their business networks
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Corporate Governance. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1472-0701 .- 1758-6054. ; 15:4, s. 427-443
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this study is to test a Triple Bottom Line (TBL)-construct as well as to describe the TBL-reasons for implementing sustainable business practices in companies and their business networks. This study explores how linking these seemingly disparate pillars of sustainability may be facilitated through a TBL construct. The notion of sustainable business practices has been evolving and is increasingly understood to encompass considerations of economic viability, as well as environmental sustainability and social responsibility.Design/methodology/approach – The research is quantitative in nature, exploring and analysing how companies in different Norwegian industries implement and manage sustainable business practices based on TBL. The survey results are reported here.Findings – The relevance of TBL to different aspects of sustainable business practices is outlined. The study generally supports the view that a heightened propensity for sustainable business practices ensures that organisations are better equipped for meeting the challenge of integrating TBL in companies and their business networks.Research limitations/implications – The study tested a construct of TBL in the context of sustainable business practices. It may be incorporated in further research in relation to other constructs. Suggestions for further research are proposed.Practical implications – Useful for practitioners to get insights into TBL-reasons for implementing business-sustainable practices in companies and their business networks. It may also be valuable to assess the general status of business-sustainable practices in a company and their business networks.Originality/value – Linking two traditionally separate and encapsulated areas of research, namely, the area of business sustainable practices and the area of TBL. The current study has contributed to a TBL-construct in relation to other constructs in measurement and structural models. It has also contributed to provide insights of priority into the main reasons to implement the elements of TBL within companies and their business networks. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
