  • Photochemical smog in China: scientific challenges and implications for air-quality policies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: National Science Review. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2095-5138 .- 2053-714X. ; 3:4, s. 401-403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In large areas of China severe air pollution events pose a significant threat to human health, ecosystems and climate. Current reduction of primary emissions will also affect secondary pollutants such as ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM), but the magnitude of the effects is uncertain. Major scientific challenges are related to the formation of O3 and secondary particulate matter including Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOA). Large uncertainties also remain regarding the interactions of soot, SOA and O3 under the influence of different SO2, NOX and VOC concentrations. To improve the understanding of these secondary atmospheric interactions in China, scientific areas of central importance for photochemically induced air pollutants have been identified. In addition to the scientific challenges, results from research need to be synthesized across several disciplines and communicated to stakeholders affected by air pollution and to policy makers responsible for developing abatement strategies. Development of these science-policy interactions can benefit from experience gained under the UN ECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP)

  • Co-Evolution of Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurial Firms and Science Parks in an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: Capabilities supporting BioBay at Suzhou Industry Park, China
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Zheijang University Seminar series.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Public-policy makers in emerging economics often want to stimulate knowledge- intensive industries, as a means to catch-up with innovation-based advanced economies. Literature on regional innovation systems and ecosystems have extensively studied agglomeration effects, and often with a focus upon the particular role of stimulating universities and scientific research. Yet funding science is not enough, due to what we identify as three complex issues related to the development of capabilities in firms and public agencies at the local-global interface. In catch-up theory, public policy which stimulates science-based industries can be seen as policy reacting to a short window of technological opportunity. In this paper, we are specifically focused upon public-private co-evolution in the biotech-pharmaceutical industry, which is highly dependent upon internal R&D and public science but also specific knowledge about national markets and global regulations. Based upon a seven-year qualitative study, we focus upon a science park in a second tier Chinese city, namely BioBay at Suzhou Industry Park. We propose a co-evolutionary process model of one element of the ecosystem, namely how increasing scale, learning and interactions between knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial firms and science parks lead to the development of both public and private capabilities to react upon this technological opportunity through entrepreneurship.

  • Understanding the effects of trust and risk on individual behavior toward social media platforms : A meta-analysis of the empirical evidence
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Computers in human behavior. - : Elsevier BV. - 0747-5632 .- 1873-7692. ; 56, s. 34-44
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trust and risk have been theorized and empirically approved as the most influential factors affecting individual behavior toward social media platforms (SMPs). However, the evidence is scattered and the understanding of the effects is ambiguous:To address this problem, a rigorous and quantitative meta analysis was conducted to investigate the empirical evidence of 43 studies in information systems research between 2006 and 2014. The findings suggested that trust and risk both had significant effects on individual behavior toward SMPs but that trust had a stronger effect. Moderating effects of trust objects (community members vs. platforms) and platform types (virtual communities vs. social networking sites) were found. Surprisingly, culture was found to exert no moderating effect. This paper contributes more generalized knowledge to social media research literature to the theory with regard to the influence of trust and risk on individual behavior toward SMPs. The knowledge serves as the foundation for future research efforts in social media. Implications for practice are discussed.

  • Chinese cross-border M&As in the "One Belt One Road" countries : The impact of Confucius Institutes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: China economic review. - : Elsevier. - 1043-951X .- 1873-7781. ; 61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the "One Belt One Road" (OBOR) initiative enters a new stage of substantive construction, Chinese cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are significantly increasing in the OBOR areas. Acknowledging this trend and drawing on institutional theory, this study investigates the impact of the Confucius Institute on China's cross-border M&As in the OBOR countries. It also examines how this impact is moderated by Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) and by comparable superior economic development and political-institution quality between home and host countries. The findings suggest that Confucius Institutes have a positive effect on the completion of M&As in OBOR countries. The effect is greater if a host country has BITs signed with China or if it has better economic development than China. This implies that, to facilitate Chinese firms' investments in OBOR areas, China should actively participate in cultural exchange activities and the establishment of Confucius Institutes should focus on those countries that have BITs with China, or which have better economic development.

  • Funding Inclusive Green Transition through Greenhouse Gas Pricing : Carbon Pricing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ifo DICE Report. - 2511-7815. ; 18:1, s. 3-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2015 was a special year. During a few months the political stars aligned and made it possible for the international community to agree on the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement to limit global warming. Now the signatories need to find ways to implement these agreements, which not only imply a deep decarbonization of the economy but must also meet the Sustainable Development Goals. In this article we discuss the importance of pricing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions2 to make this happen. Climate abatement is a truly global public good and so we actually have to have a functioning policy in all countries. Our interest is thus on pricing in all countries but in particular the developing countries that are bigger and most crucial to the struggle for a green transition.
