  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • Experimental Realization of Sensitivity Enhancement and Suppression with Exceptional Surfaces
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Laser and Photonics Reviews. - : Wiley. - 1863-8899 .- 1863-8880. ; 15:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By preparing a sensor system around isolated exceptional points, one can obtain a great enhancement of the sensitivity benefiting from the non-Hermiticity. However, this comes at the cost of reduction of the flexibility of the system, which is critical for practical applications. By generalizing the exceptional points to exceptional surfaces, it has been theoretically proposed recently that enhanced sensitivity and flexibility can be combined. Here, an exceptional surface is experimentally demonstrated in a non-Hermitian photonic sensing system, which is composed of a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator and two nanofiber waveguides, resulting in a unidirectional coupling between two degenerate counter-propagating modes with an external optical isolator. The system is simple, robust, and can be easily operated around an exceptional surface. On the one hand, sensitivity enhancement is observed by monitoring the resonant frequency splitting caused by small perturbations. This demonstration of exceptional-surface-enhanced sensitivity paves the way for practical non-Hermitian sensing applications. On the other hand, the suppression of frequency splitting around the exceptional surface is also shown for the first time.

  • Switching Time Delay Optimization for “SiC+Si” Hybrid Device in a Phase-leg Configuration
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536 .- 2169-3536. ; 9, s. 37542-37556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compared to SiC MOSFET, the switching loss of Si IGBT is much higher due to its slow switching speed and tail current. Si IGBT/SiC MOSFET hybrid switch device can reach to optimal performance with low static and dynamic loss, which can improve the current capacity of SiC devices and reduce the power loss of Si IGBT based converters. With the separated gate control signals, the switching moments of the two devices can be controlled independently to ensure Si IGBT under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions. This measurement tends to reduce the switching loss of Si IGBT. However, the switching time delay between these two devices has significant impacts on its power loss. In this paper, the switching time delay optimization method is proposed to minimize the power loss of the hybrid switch. The static and dynamic characteristics of Si IGBT/SiC MOSFET hybrid-paralleled switch are studied, and a generalized power loss model for hybrid switch is developed. The influence of switching time delay on the characteristics of hybrid switch is analyzed and verified through double pulse tests in a phase-leg configuration. The experimental results show that the optimal turn-on delay time is that the two devices turn on at the same time and the turn-on loss can be reduced by about 73% compared with the solely Si IGBT and by about 52% compared with the solely SiC MOSFET. While the optimal turn-off sequence is that the Si IGBT turns off ahead of the SiC MOSFET. Under the proposed optimal turn-off delay time of the hybrid switch, the turn-off loss is reduced by about 61.4%. This optimization strategy is used in a Buck converter to verify the superiority of the SiC/Si hybrid switch and the optimal switching sequence. Simulation results show that the optimal switching sequence is consistent with theoretical analysis, and the efficiency is improved by 2.5% compared with Buck converter using solely Si IGBT.

  • In situ monitoring drying process to disclose the correlation between the molecular weights of a polymer acceptor with a flexible spacer and the performance of all-polymer solar cells
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7534 .- 2050-7526. ; 12:33, s. 13029-13039
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular weight (Mn) and conjugation of polymers can profoundly influence the performance of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) via nanostructures of bulk heterojunctions (BHJs). To study the correlation between Mn and the performance of all-PSCs based on an acceptor with a flexible conjugation-break spacer (FCBS), three batches of acceptors, named PYTS, were synthesized with different number-average Mn from 9, 13 to 19 kDa. Blends with a polymer donor PBDB-T, the all-PSCs based on PYTS with Mn of 9 kDa and 19 kDa, exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 5.99% and 9.43%, respectively, primarily due to the increased short-circuit current density (Jsc) from 13.02 to 18.73 mA cm−2. To disclose the impact of Mn on device performance, dynamics of mixed PBDB-T:PYTS solutions to solid BHJs is studied by monitoring the drying process with home-made in situ multifunctional spectroscopy, which demonstrates that PYTS with Mn of 19 kDa has a longer drying time than the PYTS with Mn of 9 kDa. Prolonged drying of the BHJs with higher Mn PYTS facilitates more tightly packed structures with higher crystallinity. A systematic investigation on the nanostructures of BHJs, charge generation, transport and recombination is carried out with grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) and characterization of all-PSCs. The results indicate that increased crystallinity in the BHJs benefits exciton dissociation, electron transport, prolonged carrier lifetimes, and decreased non-geminate recombination rate constants in the corresponding devices. Combining the in situ study of drying and the investigation on films and devices provides us a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between Mn, the drying process, the nanostructures of BHJs and device performance. This work not only emphasizes the essential role of Mn in governing the device performance, but also exhibits recorded film formation through the in situ spectroscopy, enabling us to manipulate the nanostructure of BHJs by optimizing Mn of polymers and processing parameters.

  • The trade-off between electrochromic stability and contrast of a thiophene-Quinoxaline copolymer
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 253, s. 530-535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The stability of organic electrochromic devices is a crucial issue for their applications. However, until now the degradation mechanism of electrochromic materials are still not fully understood especially for electrochromic conjugated polymers (ECPs). To improve device stability, intensive investigation on the degradation mechanism of ECPs is urgently needed. Here we report our study on the electrochromic degradation in a thiophene-quinoxaline copolymer: poly [2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl) quinoxaline-5,8diyl- alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (TQ1). The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) and UV-vis transmission spectra reveal that there are three main factors during the electrochromic degradation of TQ1. The first one is anion (ClO4-) irreversibly deep trapped, while the second is peroxidation of the thiophene group in TQ1. Both factors reduce the conductivity and electrochromism of TQ1. The third is structural relaxation resulting lager conjugated system of TQ1 molecules in film, which is gradually developed during 400 cycling of CV at a narrow potential range (01 V). When a potential range 0-0.7 V is applied, all three factors are prohibited, no electrochromism degradation is observed anymore, although the contrast becomes smaller. Our investigation systematically discloses the degradation mechanism during the electrochemistry processing of a ECP (TQ1), demonstrating the significance of trade-off between the electrochromic stability and contrast of the ECP.

  • Perylene Diimide-Based Low-Cost and Thickness-Tolerant Electron Transport Layer Enables Polymer Solar Cells Approaching 19% Efficiency
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - 1616-3028 .- 1616-301X. ; 34:34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The materials for electron transport layers (ETLs) play a significant role in the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) but face challenges, such as low electron transport mobility and conductivity, low solution processibility, and extreme thickness sensitivity, which will undermine the photovoltaic performance and hinder compatibility of large-scale fabrication technique. To address these challenges, a new n-type perylene diimide-based molecule (PDINB) with two special amine-anchored long-side chains is designed and synthesized feasibly. PDINB shows very high solubility in common organic solvents, such as dichloromethane (>75 mg ml−1) and methanol with acetic acid as an additive (>37 mg ml−1), which leads to excellent film formability when deposited on active layers. With PDINB as ETLs, the photovoltaic performance of the PSCs is boosted comprehensively, leading to power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 18.81%. Thanks to the strong self-doping effect and high conductivity of PDINB, it displays an appreciable thickness-tolerant property as ETLs, where the devices remain consistently high PCE values with the thickness varying from 5 to 30 nm. Interestingly, PDINB can be used as a generic ETL in different types of PSCs including non-fullerene PSCs and all-polymer PSCs. Therefore, PDINB can be a potentially competitive candidate as an efficient ETL for PSCs.

  • Herschel observations of deuterated water towards Sgr B2(M)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 521, s. L38-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Observations of HDO are an important complement for studies of water, because they give strong constraints on the formation processes - grain surfaces versus energetic process in the gas phase, e. g. in shocks. The HIFI observations of multiple transitions of HDO in Sgr B2(M) presented here allow the determination of the HDO abundance throughout the envelope, which has not been possible before with ground-based observations only. The abundance structure has been modeled with the spherical Monte Carlo radiative transfer code RATRAN, which also takes radiative pumping by continuum emission from dust into account. The modeling reveals that the abundance of HDO rises steeply with temperature from a low abundance (2.5 x 10(-11)) in the outer envelope at temperatures below 100 K through a medium abundance (1.5 x 10(-9)) in the inner envelope/outer core at temperatures between 100 and 200 K, and finally a high abundance (3.5 x 10(-9)) at temperatures above 200 K in the hot core.

  • Local surface plasmon resonance of single silver nanorice particles in the near-infrared
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Mikrochimica Acta. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1436-5073 .- 0026-3672. ; 181:7-8, s. 791-795
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis and optical spectra of silver nanorice particles. Two strong absorption bands are resolved in the near UV and near-IR region, and the dark field scattering spectra are consistent with the absorption spectra. Finite-difference time-domain simulations reveal that the peak in the IR region can be attributed to the E field that is parallel to the long axis, while the peak in the UV can be attributed to the E field perpendicular to the short axis of the silver nanorice particles.
