  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Multifunctionality in (K,Na)NbO3-based ceramic near polymorphic phase boundary
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 130:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 0.95K0.42Na0.58Nb0.96Sb0.04O3–0.02BaZrO3–0.03Bi0.5K0.5HfO3 ceramic was fabricated via a conventional solid-state reaction. This ceramic exhibits the diffuse polymorphic phase boundary (PPB) near room temperature. The dielectric, ferroelectric, electromechanical, electrocaloric, and dielectric energy storage properties were studied systemically. The normalized large signal d33* values are approximately 400–600 pm/V at measured temperatures and electric fields, which are larger than or comparable with the values reported in other lead-free compositions. The electrocaloric strength is enhanced at the broad region of PPB provided by the indirect and direct measurements. At low field of 30 kV/cm, the dielectric energy storage is ∼0.12–018 J/cm3 at relative broad temperature range due to the diffuse nature of polymorphic phase boundary. Theoretical simulations reveal that multi-element dopants, such as Sb5+, Hf4+, Zr4+, and Bi3+ ions, could induce the breaking of local structure symmetry in the orthorhombic phase to form the PPB. In addition, the charge distribution may also break the long-range ferroelectric order through the analysis of Bader charge. Our study suggests that the K0.5Na0.5NbO3-based ceramic exhibits improved performance and good thermal stability in piezoelectric, electrocaloric, and dielectric energy storage characteristics in terms of the design of multi-element dopants to form the PPB and it will benefit the promising applications in electronic devices.

  • Time Series Recovery Using Adjacent Channel Data Based on LSTM: A Case Study of Subway Vibrations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-3417. ; 12:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-sensor technology has been widely applied in the condition monitoring of rail transit. In practice, the data of some channels in the high channel counts are often abnormal or lost due to the abnormality and damage of the sensors, thus resulting in a large amount of data waste. A method for the data recovery of lost channels by using adjacent channel data is proposed to solve this problem. Based on the LSTM network algorithm, a data recovery model is established based on the “sequence-to-sequence” regression analysis of adjacent channel data. Taking the measured vibration data of a subway as an example, the network is trained with multi-channel measured data to recover the lost channel data of time-series characteristics. The results show that this multi-channel data recovery model is feasible, and the accuracy is up to 98%. This method can also further reduce the number of channels that need to be collected.

  • Failure and Mechanical Behavior of Transversely Isotropic Rock under Compression-Shear Tests : Laboratory Testing and Numerical Simulation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engineering Fracture Mechanics. - : Elsevier. - 0013-7944 .- 1873-7315. ; 241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The failure and mechanical behavior of transversely isotropic rock are significantly affected by the original bedding planes. Until now, few studies have been performed to investigate the influence of the geometrical and mechanical parameters of the bedding planes on the fracture characteristics of transversely isotropic rocks under planar shear fracture loading conditions. For this purpose, experimental and numerical compression-shear tests on double-notched specimens are conducted to investigate the fracturing characteristics of transversely isotropic rock under planar shear fracture loading. The experimental study that focuses on the influence of bedding plane inclination on fracture load, fracture pattern and AE evolution, and six inclination angles is conducted in this study. Based on the flat joint contact model (for the rock matrix) and smooth joint contact model (for the original bedding plane) in PFC2D (particle flow code), the microscale fracturing process of transversely isotropic rock with different inclinations is simulated and analyzed. The results show that the inclination has an important influence on the fracture load and fracture pattern, and the maximum and minimum fracture loads are obtained for specimens with inclination angles of 30° and 60°, respectively. Moreover, the strength and spacing of the original bedding planes also play an important role in fracture loads. Higher bedding plane strength and wider bedding plane spacing result in higher fracture loads. In addition, with a moderate inclination angle, transversely isotropic rock with higher bedding plane strength tends to form cracks that cut through the rock matrix. However, with the decrease in the bedding plane strength, more fractures form along the bedding planes.

  • Determination of dissolution kinetics of K2SO4 crystal with ion selective electrode
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Science. - 0009-2509 .- 1873-4405. ; 56, s. 7017-7024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dissolution kinetics of potassium sulfate crystals was studied and the effects of hydrodynamic situation and temperature on the dissolution were investigated. The dissolution was determined by measuring the change of electromotive force (E) with the potassium ion selective electrode. From the values of E, the concentration of K+ was calculated combined with an activity coefficient model. The results are accurate and rapid, the maximum deviation is less than 2%. Theory, developed for constant bulk concentration in a rotating disk system, was modified in order to analyze the general grain dissolution process. Normal distribution was introduced in calculating the area of crystals in order to obtain reliable dissolution rate. Using the modified theory diffusion rate constant, equilibrium exchange rate constant and thickness of diffusion layer were obtained. It is found that the diffusion rate constants increase while the thickness of diffusion layer decreases with the increase of temperature and stirring speed; the equilibrium exchange rate is dependent on bulk concentration.

  • Implementation of evolutionary computing models for reference evapotranspiration modeling : short review, assessment and possible future research directions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics. - UK : Taylor & Francis. - 1994-2060 .- 1997-003X. ; 13:1, s. 811-823
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evapotranspiration is one of the most important components of the hydrological cycle as it accounts for more than two-thirds of the global precipitation losses. Indeed, the accurate prediction of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is highly significant for many watershed activities, including agriculture, water management, crop production and several other applications. Therefore, reliable estimation of ETo is a major concern in hydrology. ETo can be estimated using different approaches, including field measurement, empirical formulation and mathematical equations. Most recently, advanced machine learning models have been developed for the estimation of ETo. Among several machine learning models, evolutionary computing (EC) has demonstrated a remarkable progression in the modeling of ETo. The current research is devoted to providing a new milestone in the implementation of the EC algorithm for the modeling of ETo. A comprehensive review is conducted to recognize the feasibility of EC models and their potential in simulating ETo in a wide range of environments. Evaluation and assessment of the models are also presented based on the review. Finally, several possible future research directions are proposed for the investigations of ETo using EC.
