  • Assessing local yield stress and fracture toughness of carbon nanotube poly(methyl methacrylate) composite by nanosectioning
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A nanosectioning (cutting) method was used to test the local shear yield stress and fracture toughness of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites, and the effect of MWCNT content on the stress and toughness were investigated. The composites were prepared by a solution casting method, with MWCNT content varying from 0.05-1.0 wt%. A critical MWCNT content was found at 0.1 wt%; below such a critical content the shear yield stress increases by the incorporation of MWCNTs, while above this content the yield stress reduces. The fracture toughness of the composite was effectively enhanced by the addition of MWCNTs, from 17 J/m2 for the neat PMMA to 25 J/m2 for the 1.0 wt% composite. The shear yield stresses obtained by nanosectioning were correlated to nanoindentation measurement, and possible contributions from the MWCNTs to the fracture toughness of the composite were analysed.

  • A Device that Models Human Swallowing
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dysphagia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0179-051X .- 1432-0460. ; 34:5, s. 615-626
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pharynx is critical for correct swallowing, facilitating the transport of both air and food transport in a highly coordinated manner, and aberrant co-ordination causes swallowing disorders (dysphagia). In this work, an in vitro model of swallowing was designed to investigate the role of rheology in swallowing and for use as a pre-clinical tool for simulation of different routes to dysphagia. The model is based on the geometry of the human pharynx. Manometry is used for pressure measurements and ultrasonic analysis is performed to analyze the flow profiles and determine shear rate in the bolus, the latter being vital information largely missing in literature. In the fully automated model, bolus injection, epiglottis/nasopharynx movement, and ultrasound transducer positioning can be controlled. Simulation of closing of the airways and nasal cavity is modulated by the software, as is a clamping valve that simulates the upper esophageal sphincter. The actions can be timed and valves opened to different degrees, resembling pathologic swallowing conditions. To validate measurements of the velocity profile and manometry, continuous and bolus flow was performed. The respective velocity profiles demonstrated the accuracy and validity of the flow characterization necessary for determining bolus flow. A maximum bolus shear rate of 80 s−1 was noted for syrup-consistency fluids. Similarly, the manometry data acquired compared very well with clinical studies.

  • Introducing domain knowledge for selection of active factors in designed experiments
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering (IJRQSE). - 0218-5393. ; 7:4, s. 341-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unreplicated factorial designs are widely used for designed experimentation in industry. In the analysis of designed experiments, the experimental factors influencing the response must be identified and separated from those that do not. An abundance of procedures intended to perform this selection have been introduced in the literature. A recent study indicated that the procedure due to Box and Meyer outperforms the lot of the other selection procedures in terms of efficiency and robustness. The procedure of Box and Meyer rests on a quasi-Bayesian foundation and utilizes generic domain knowledge, in the form of a common-for-all-factors a priori probability, that a factor significantly influences the response, to calculate an a posteriori probability for each factor. This paper suggests a strategy for introducing more elaborate domain knowledge about the experimental factors in the procedure of Box and Meyer, aiming to further improve its performance.

  • New press deflection measuring methods for the creation of substitutive models for efficient die cambering
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 1157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cost and time for die tryout are significant within the car industry, and elastic deflections of dies and presses are most commonly not considered during the virtual die design and forming simulation phase. Because of this, active surfaces of stamping dies are only cambered based on previous experiences of tool types and presses. However, almost all stamping dies and presses are unique, and available experiences are not valid for new materials. Partners within the Eureka SMART Advanced Manufacturing research project CAMBER have developed advanced deflection measuring devices to quantify the elastic deformations of presses. Using these measurements, cambering methodologies can be utilized in sheet metal forming simulations. Important breakthroughs in recent years enabling the cambering methodology consists of efficient simulation strategies for full scale simulations with elastic dies and optimization techniques for creating substitutive press structures based on measurements. Furthermore, modern press deflection measurement methods are beneficial in applications such as Industry 4.0, predictive maintenance, product quality control, etc. through a more advanced understanding and live monitoring of the press system.
