Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

• Prevention of cardiovascular diseases includes actions regarding myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, stroke, and intermittent claudication. Many risk factors for myocardial infarction and fewer for stroke have been identified, but according to intervention studies, only a limited number of them have resulted in decreased disease incidence. An international study has recently shown that nine risk factors explain 90% or more of the population-attributable risk of myocardial infarction. Recommended prevention actions are avoiding tobacco smoking, preventing and treating high blood pressure and diabetes, keeping a diet low in saturated fat, salt, and calories, and keeping a high level of physical activity. When a person has suffered from disease, other factors related to the event add to these actions in secondary prevention. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
