  • Microstructure and tribological properties of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composite materials prepared by hot isostatic pressing (HIP)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Materials and Design. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-4197 .- 0264-1275. ; 115:115, s. 203-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ni3Al-based composites with different Cr3C2 contents were fabricated by the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technique. The microstructure, phase constitution, and tribological properties of the composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and pin-on-disk wear tests. The results revealed that the strengthening phase is distributed homogeneously in the Ni3Al matrix. During the HIP process, M7C3 (M = Cr, Fe) is formed by diffusion of Fe, C, and Cr to the interface between the Cr3C2 particles and Ni3Al matrix. The diffusion process binds the phases and is important for improving the wear resistance of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites. The wear measurements demonstrated that micro-cutting and fatigue wear are the dominant mechanisms for this tribological pair. The wear resistance of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites is significantly improved by the addition of Cr3C2 particles. When the content of Cr3C2 is within a certain range, the wear resistance of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites increases as the Cr3C2 content increases. However, the addition of excess Cr3C2 (for example, 24 vol% in this work) could lead to a decrease in the wear resistance of the composites. In addition, the average friction coefficients and wear of the counterpart decrease with increasing Cr3C2 addition.

  • Detector developments at DESY
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - 0909-0495 .- 1600-5775. ; 23, s. 111-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increased brilliance of state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation sources and the advent of free-electron lasers (FELs) enabling revolutionary science with EUV to X-ray photons comes an urgent need for suitable photon imaging detectors. Requirements include high frame rates, very large dynamic range, single-photon sensitivity with low probability of false positives and (multi)-megapixels. At DESY, one ongoing development project-in collaboration with RAL/STFC, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, Diamond, and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory-is the CMOS-based soft X-ray imager PERCIVAL. PERCIVAL is a monolithic active-pixel sensor back-thinned to access its primary energy range of 250 eV to 1 keV with target efficiencies above 90%. According to preliminary specifications, the roughly 10 cm × 10 cm, 3.5k × 3.7k monolithic sensor will operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz (commensurate with most FELs) and use multiple gains within 27 μm pixels to measure 1 to ∼ 100000 (500 eV) simultaneously arriving photons. DESY is also leading the development of the AGIPD, a high-speed detector based on hybrid pixel technology intended for use at the European XFEL. This system is being developed in collaboration with PSI, University of Hamburg, and University of Bonn. The AGIPD allows singlepulse imaging at 4.5 MHz frame rate into a 352-frame buffer, with a dynamic range allowing single-photon detection and detection of more than 10000 photons at 12.4 keV in the same image. Modules of 65k pixels each are configured to make up (multi)megapixel cameras. This review describes the AGIPD and the PERCIVAL concepts and systems, including some recent results and a summary of their current status. It also gives a short overview over other FEL-relevant developments where the Photon Science Detector Group at DESY is involved. © 2016 International Union of Crystallography.

    • With the increased brilliance of state-of-the-art Synchrotron radiation sources and the advent of Free Electron Lasers enabling revolutionary science with EUV to X-ray photons comes an urgent need for suitable photon imaging detectors. Requirements include high frame rates, very large dynamic range, single-photon counting capability with low probability of false positives, and (multi)-megapixels. PERCIVAL (''Pixelated Energy Resolving CMOS Imager, Versatile and Large'') is currently being developed by a collaboration of DESY, RAL, Elettra and DLS to address this need for the soft X-ray regime. PERCIVAL is a monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS), i.e. based on CMOS technology. It will be back-thinned to access its primary energy range of 250 eV to 1 keV with target efficiencies above 90%. According to its preliminary specifications, the roughly 10 × 10 cm2, 3520 × 3710 pixel monolithic sensor will operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz (commensurate with most FELs) and use multiple gains within its 27 μm pixels to measure (e.g. at 500 eV) 1 to ∼ 105 simultaneously-arriving photons. Currently, small-scale front-illuminated prototype systems (160 × 210 pixels) are undergoing detailed testing with visible-light as well as X-ray photons. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

  • Stochastic self-triggered model predictive control for linear systems with probabilistic constraints
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Automatica. - : Elsevier. - 0005-1098 .- 1873-2836. ; 92, s. 9-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A stochastic self-triggered model predictive control (SSMPC) algorithm is proposed for linear systems subject to exogenous disturbances and probabilistic constraints. The main idea behind the self-triggered framework is that at each sampling instant, an optimization problem is solved to determine both the next sampling instant and the control inputs to be applied between the two sampling instants. Although the self-triggered implementation achieves communication reduction, the control commands are necessarily applied in open-loop between sampling instants. To guarantee probabilistic constraint satisfaction, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived on the nominal systems by using the information on the distribution of the disturbances explicitly. Moreover, based on a tailored terminal set, a multi-step open-loop MPC optimization problem with infinite prediction horizon is transformed into a tractable quadratic programming problem with guaranteed recursive feasibility. The closed-loop system is shown to be stable. Numerical examples illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme in terms of performance, constraint satisfaction, and reduction of both control updates and communications with a conventional time-triggered scheme.

  • Techno-economic evaluation of an optical fiber based hybrid solar lighting system
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy Conversion and Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0196-8904 .- 1879-2227. ; 225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical fiber solar lighting systems are an appealing approach for illumination applications with the aim of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from artificial lighting. This study presented the design, construction and assessment of an optical fiber based hybrid solar lighting system for illumination of interior spaces. The proposed system combines the features of optical fiber daylighting technology and photovoltaic power generation technology. Specifically, a secondary light concentrator was designed to improve the uniformity of flux distribution and solve the overheating problem of PMMA fibers. The technical feasibility of the hybrid solar lighting system was validated using the fabricated prototype in a 5 m2 darkroom during a whole day test. Experimental results showed that, an average illuminance of 105 lx at a distance of 2 m from the end of optical fiber bundle was achieved, saving 316.82 kWh and reducing 251.24 kg carbon dioxide emissions every year in the studied case. Finally, cost analysis of the proposed hybrid solar lighting system was carried out and compared with three conventional lighting systems. The total payback period of the hybrid solar lighting system was 3.7 years and further reduced to 1.7 years in mass production. In the studied case, the hybrid solar lighting system was economically competitive after 2 years and 12 years of operation in comparison with a 100 W incandescent bulb lighting system and a 30 W T8 fluorescent lamp lighting system, respectively.

  • Effects of Cr3C2 content and temperature on sliding friction and wear behaviors of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composite materials
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Wear. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1648. ; 414-415, s. 163-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chromium carbide (Cr3C2)-reinforced Ni3Al matrix composites, which possess excellent high-temperature strength and wear resistance, are considered as potential high-temperature wear-resistant materials. In this study, effects of Cr3C2content on the friction and wear properties of Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites and their counterpart gray cast iron disks were investigated at different temperatures. The worn surface morphologies of the Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites and gray cast iron disks were analyzed to understand their wear mechanisms. The analysis results showed that in the Ni3Al matrix composites, a combination of abrasive wear and adhesive wear occurred at room temperature, whereas adhesive wear was severer at 200 °C. Furthermore, the optimum Cr3C2contents of the Cr3C2/Ni3Al composites were found to be 18 vol% and 12 vol% at room temperature and 200 °C, respectively. The volume loss of the composites increased with an increase in the fraction of the Cr3C2strengthening phase at 350 °C. The wear resistance of the gray cast iron disks decreased with an increase in temperature. In contrast, the wear resistance of the Ni3Al matrix composites increased with an increase in temperature. This increased wear resistance of the composites is attributed to the transformation of their wear mechanism with increasing temperature.

  • Mechanical property and reliability of bimodal nano-silver paste with Ag-coated SiC particles
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Soldering and Surface Mount Technology. - 1758-6836 .- 0954-0911. ; 31:4, s. 193-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited. Purpose: This study aims to develop a bimodal nano-silver paste with improved mechanical property and reliability. Silicon carbide (SiC) particles coated with Ag were introduced in nano-silver paste to improve bonding strength between SiC and Ag particles and enhance high-temperature stability of bimodal nano-silver paste. The effect of sintering parameters such as sintering temperature, sintering time and the proportion of SiC particles on mechanical property and reliability of sintered bimodal nano-silver structure were investigated. Design/methodology/approach: Sandwich structures consist of dummy chips and copper substrates with nickel and silver coating bonded by nano-silver paste were designed for shear testing. Shear strength testing was conducted to study the influence of SiC particles proportions on the mechanical property of sintered nano-silver joints. The reliability of the bimodal nano-silver paste was evaluated experimentally by means of shear test for samples subjected to thermal aging test at 150°C and humidity and temperature testing at 85°C and 85 per cent RH, respectively. Findings: Shear strength was enhanced obviously with the increase of sintering temperature and sintering time. The maximum shear strength was achieved for nano-silver paste sintered at 260°C for 10 min. There was a negative correlation between the proportion of SiC particles and shear strength. After thermal aging testing and humidity and temperature testing for 240 h, the shear strength decreased a little. High-temperature stability and high-hydrothermal stability were improved by the addition of SiC particles. Originality/value: Submicron-scale SiC particles coated with Ag were used as alternative materials to replace part of nano-silver particles to prepare bimodal nano-silver paste due to its high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical property.

  • Effect of Cr3C2 Content on the Microstructure and Wear Resistance of Fe3Al/Cr3C2 Composites
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Coatings. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-6412. ; 12:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an engine piston ring coating comprising composite material of Fe3Al and Cr3C2 mixed powder was prepared by laser cladding onto carbon structural steel. The microstructure and tribological properties of the cladding materials were investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and wear tests. The influence mechanism of the Cr3C2 content in cladding powder was studied. During the process of wear, the soft Fe3Al/Fe2AlCr matrix is first ground off, and the hard Cr7C3 phase initially supports the abrasive surface before being worn away into hard particles, resulting in abrasive wear. With the increase in Cr3C2 content, the hardness of the cladding layer increases, the proportion of the Cr7C3 phase increases, and the morphology changes from a sparse network to a dense floccule. Of the cladding layers with different Cr3C2 content, the 15 wt.% Cr3C2 cladding layer had the lowest friction coefficient, and the 25 wt.% Cr3C2 cladding layer had the lowest wear rate. The low wear rate of the 25 wt.% Cr3C2 cladding layer can be attributed to the fact that adhesive wear does not easily occur and the fine microstructure of the strengthening phase, which facilitates better separation in the grinding surfaces.

  • Gaussian implementation of the multi-Bernoulli mixture filter
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: FUSION 2019 - 22nd International Conference on Information Fusion.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the Gaussian implementation of the multi-Bernoulli mixture (MBM) filter. The MBM filter provides the filtering (multi-target) density for the standard dynamic and radar measurement models when the birth model is multi-Bernoulli or multi-Bernoulli mixture. Under linear/Gaussian models, the single target densities of the MBM mixture admit Gaussian closed-form expressions. Murty's algorithm is used to select the global hypotheses with highest weights. The MBM filter is compared with other algorithms in the literature via numerical simulations.
