  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Efficient SO2 capture at ultra-low concentration using a hybrid absorbent of deep eutectic solvent and ethylene glycol
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Liquids. - : Elsevier. - 0167-7322 .- 1873-3166. ; 382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered as the highly effective absorbents for sulfur dioxide (SO2) capture. However, the high viscosity of DESs and the resulting slow absorption rate as well as low absorption capacity at low SO2 concentration seriously hinder their industrial application. In this study, DES of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and imidazole (Im) is simply blended with ethylene glycol (EG) forming a hybrid absorbent, namely MDEA/Im-EG, which exhibits extremely high SO2 capture capacity at low concentration. In particular, SO2 capture capacity in MDEA/Im-EG (molar ratio = 1:1) reaches 0.446 g SO2/g absorbent at 293.2 K with SO2 concentration of 2000 ppm. Moreover, the corresponding desorption enthalpy is only −40.67 kJ/mol. To well understand the results, thermodynamic analysis of SO2 capture is performed and the SO2 capture mechanism is speculated by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

  • Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: A pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4.4 million participants
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 387:10027, s. 1513-1530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are aff ecting the number of adults with diabetes. Methods: We pooled data from population-based studies that had collected data on diabetes through measurement of its biomarkers. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in diabetes prevalence-defined as fasting plasma glucose of 7.0 mmol/L or higher, or history of diagnosis with diabetes, or use of insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs-in 200 countries and territories in 21 regions, by sex and from 1980 to 2014. We also calculated the posterior probability of meeting the global diabetes target if post-2000 trends continue.Findings: We used data from 751 studies including 4372000 adults from 146 of the 200 countries we make estimates for. Global age-standardised diabetes prevalence increased from 4.3% (95% credible interval 2.4-17.0) in 1980 to 9.0% (7.2-11.1) in 2014 in men, and from 5.0% (2.9-7.9) to 7.9% (6.4-9.7) in women. The number of adults with diabetes in the world increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 (28.5% due to the rise in prevalence, 39.7% due to population growth and ageing, and 31.8% due to interaction of these two factors). Age-standardised adult diabetes prevalence in 2014 was lowest in northwestern Europe, and highest in Polynesia and Micronesia, at nearly 25%, followed by Melanesia and the Middle East and north Africa. Between 1980 and 2014 there was little change in age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adult women in continental western Europe, although crude prevalence rose because of ageing of the population. By contrast, age-standardised adult prevalence rose by 15 percentage points in men and women in Polynesia and Micronesia. In 2014, American Samoa had the highest national prevalence of diabetes (>30% in both sexes), with age-standardised adult prevalence also higher than 25% in some other islands in Polynesia and Micronesia. If post-2000 trends continue, the probability of meeting the global target of halting the rise in the prevalence of diabetes by 2025 at the 2010 level worldwide is lower than 1% for men and is 1% for women. Only nine countries for men and 29 countries for women, mostly in western Europe, have a 50% or higher probability of meeting the global target.Interpretation: Since 1980, age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adults has increased, or at best remained unchanged, in every country. Together with population growth and ageing, this rise has led to a near quadrupling of the number of adults with diabetes worldwide. The burden of diabetes, both in terms of prevalence and number of adults aff ected, has increased faster in low-income and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

  • Effect of FeO on the formation of spinel phases and chromium distribution in the CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-Cr2O3 system
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy and Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1674-4799 .- 1869-103X. ; 20:3, s. 253-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synthetic slag samples of the CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-Cr2O3 system were obtained to clarify the effect of FeO on the formation of spinel phases and Cr distribution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), as well as the thermodynamic software FactSage 6.2, were used for sample characterization. The results show that the addition of FeO can decrease the viscosity of molten slag and the precipitation temperatures of melilite and merwinite. The solidus temperature significantly decreases from 1400 to 1250 degrees C with the increase of FeO content from 0wt% to 6wt%. The addition of FeO could enhance the content of Cr in spinel phases and reduce the content of Cr in soluble minerals, such as merwinite, melilite, and dicalcium silicate. Hence, the addition of FeO is conducive to decreasing Cr leaching.

  • Operando Formation of Van der Waals Heterostructures for Achieving Macroscale Superlubricity on Engineering Rough and Worn Surfaces
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 32:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Macroscale superlubricity breakdown of lubricating materials caused by substrate surface roughening and mechanochemical modification poses great challenges for their practical tribological applications. Here, a facile way is reported to access robust macroscale superlubricity in a vacuum environment, via the operando formation of graphene/transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterostructures at wear-induced rough surfaces. By trapping active amorphous carbon (a-C) wear products between TMDC flakes, the sandwich structures readily transform into graphene/TMDC heterostructures during running-in stage, based on shear-induced confinement and load-driven graphitization effects. Then they assemble into multipoint flake-like tribofilms to achieve macroscale superlubricity at steady stage by reducing contact area, eliminating strong cross-interface carbon–carbon interactions and polishing a-C rough nascent surface. Atomistic simulations reveal the preferential formation of graphene/TMDC heterostructures during running-in stage and demonstrate the superlubric sliding of TMDCs on the graphene. The findings are of importance to achieve robust superlubricity and provide a good strategy for the synthesis of other van der Waals heterostructures.

  • Minimizing the makespan for a serial-batching scheduling problem with arbitrary machine breakdown and dynamic job arrival
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Advanced Manufacturing Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0885-5684. ; 86:9-12, s. 3315-3331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many dynamic events exist in real manufacturing systems, such as arbitrary machine breakdowns and dynamic job arrivals, which makes the scheduling problem even more complicated. In this paper, we address a serial-batching scheduling problem with the above dynamic events. Jobs need to be processed on the serial-batching machines of two manufacturers and then transported by vehicles to a customer for further processing. The objective of the scheduling problem is to minimize the makespan, and the problem is proved to be strongly NP-hard. Some structural properties and a lower bound of the problem are also proved or derived. On the basis of job arrival times, we divide the problem into two phases and propose different rules regarding these two phases. Based on these properties and rules, a heuristic algorithm is developed to solve the problem and its worst case performance is analyzed. The heuristic algorithm is tested on a large set of randomly generated problem instances, and the relative gaps between the found lower bound and the solutions of the proposed heuristic algorithm are reported. The experimental results illustrate the high efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed heuristic algorithm compared with other four classic approaches.

  • Scheduling jobs on a single serial-batching machine with dynamic job arrivals and multiple job types
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1012-2443 .- 1573-7470. ; 76:1-2, s. 215-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates a scheduling model with certain co-existing features of serial-batching, dynamic job arrival, multi-types of job, and setup time. In this proposed model, the jobs of all types are first partitioned into serial batches, which are then processed on a single serial-batching machine with an independent constant setup time for each new batch. In order to solve this scheduling problem, we divide it into two phases based on job arrival times, and we also derive and prove certain constructive properties for these two phases. Relying on these properties, we develop a two-phase hybrid algorithm (TPHA). In addition, a valid lower bound of the problem is also derived. This is used to validate the quality of the proposed algorithm. Computational experiments, both with small- and large-scale problems, are performed in order to evaluate the performance of TPHA. The computational results indicate that TPHA outperforms seven other heuristic algorithms. For all test problems of different job sizes, the average gap percentage between the makespan, obtained using TPHA, and the lower bound does not exceed 5.41 %.

  • Serial-batching scheduling with time-dependent setup time and effects of deterioration and learning on a single-machine
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Global Optimization. - : Springer. - 0925-5001 .- 1573-2916. ; 67:1-2, s. 251-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with serial-batching scheduling problems with the effects of deterioration and learning, where time-dependent setup time is also considered. In the proposed scheduling models, all jobs are first partitioned into serial batches, and then all batches are processed on a single serial-batching machine. The actual job processing time is a function of its starting time and position. In addition, a setup time is required when a new batch is processed, and the setup time of the batches is time-dependent, i.e., it is a linear function of its starting time. Structural properties are derived for the problems of minimizing the makespan, the number of tardy jobs, and the maximum earliness. Then, three optimization algorithms are developed to solve them, respectively
