  • Intersectionality as a new perspective in international business research
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:4, s. 457-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the intersectionality perspective as a theoretical lens in the study of the multinational company (MNC) – with its spatial separation of subunits, language and cultural diversity, organizational complexity, and multiplicity of activity environments – will yield exciting and novel possibilities for theory creation. A prime area of study deals with career patterns, i.e., who ‘makes it to the top’ in MNCs. Especially interesting are the effects of social interaction shaped in the interplay between MNCs’ talent identification and individuals’ identification processes. We discuss empirical research strategies for applying the intersectionality perspective, and managerial implications related to raising intersectionality awareness.

  • The business of teaching and learning through multicultural teams
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Teaching in International Business. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0897-5930 .- 1528-6991. ; 19:2, s. 192-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Team working is a key skill students need in this era of global complexity. Here we combine research with practice to develop a model for working in multicultural teams which can be used in International Business curricula. We formulate the 4 Cs model focusing on two areas: composition and communication. These two Cs have been chosen because they are active research areas and because they are the areas that have presented our own student groups with the biggest challenges. Getting these wrong can lead to the third C: conflict. Getting these right can lead to that illusive: fourth C: creativity. We then illustrate how using multicultural teams in international business courses can facilitate the development of inter- and intrapersonal capabilities through conceptual, experiential, experimental, and reflective student learning.

  • A sensemaking perspective on arts sponsorship decisions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Arts and the Market. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2056-4945. ; 6:1, s. 68-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to better understand the sensemaking strategies of managers involved in making decisions concerning arts sponsorship. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative, multiple case method is employed, using multiple informants in ten arts sponsorship decisions. Within and between case analyses were conducted and examined iteratively, along with literature to generate themes to guide future research. Findings - This study finds art sponsorships may be seen as ambiguous, cueing sensemaking; the sensemaking strategies of senior managers involve response to pro-social cues while middle managers draw on commercial benefit cues; sensebreaking and sensegiving are part of the process; and the actors and their interpretations draw from cues in the organisational frames of reference which act as filters, giving meaning to the situations. Research limitations/implications - This study presents a novel perspective on these decisions, focusing on the micro-level actions and interpretations of actors. It extends current understanding of sponsorship decision making, contributing to a perspective of managers responding to cues, interacting and making sense of their decisions. Practical implications - For arts managers, this perspective provides understanding of how managers (potential sponsors) respond to multiple cues, interpret and rationalise arts sponsorships. For corporate managers, insights reveal differences in sensemaking between hierarchical levels, and the role of interaction, and organisational frames of reference. Originality/value - This study is unique in its approach to understanding these decisions in terms of sensemaking, through the use of multiple informants and multiple case studies.

  • Examining the influence of the individual in arts sponsorship decisions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nonprofit & Public Sector Marketing. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1049-5142 .- 1540-6997. ; 25:1, s. 81-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Support from the corporate sector is an important revenue source for many nonprofit organizations.  In this article, we consider individual-level influence within the decision making processes of companies as they make decisions concerning nonprofit arts sponsorship.  These decisions have often been linked to the influence of a single high-level executive, and the research contained here seeks to better understand the role of the individual in influencing these decisions.  Through qualitative multiple-case research the authors find that a single individual, termed the Advocate, is in fact influential.  Furthermore, the advocate is determined not by their title or official ranking but by their possession of expert power, a combination of knowledge and the belief of others in that knowledge.  In addition, how individuals influence these decisions relates to their application not of gut instinct, but of informed intuition.  The paper closes in suggesting new perspectives which will assist in better understanding this role.

  • Actions taken to safeguard the intended health care chain of older people with multiple diagnoses-a critical incident study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - : BMC. - 1472-6955. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Older people with multiple diagnoses often have problems coping with their daily lives at home because of lack of coordination between various parts of the healthcare chain during the transit from hospital care to the home. To provide good care to those persons who have the most complex needs, regions and municipalities must work together. It is of importance to develop further empirical knowledge in relation to older persons with multiple diagnoses to illuminate possible obstacles to person-centred care during the transition between healthcare institutions and the persons livelihood. The aim of the present study was to describe nurses' experienced critical incidents in different parts of the intended healthcare chain of older people with multiple diagnoses. Methods: The sample consisted of 18 RNs in different parts of the healthcare system involved in the care of older people with multiple diagnoses. Data were collected by semi structured interviews and analysed according to Critical Incident Technique (CIT). A total of 169 critical incidents were identified describing experiences in recently experienced situations. Results: The result showed that organizational restrictions in providing care and limitations in collaboration were the main areas of experienced critical incidents. Actions took place due to the lack of preventive actions for care, difficulties in upholding patients' legal rights to participation in care, deficiencies in cooperation between organizations as well as ambiguous responsibilities and roles. The RNs experienced critical incidents that required moral actions to ensure continued person-centred nursing and provide evidence-based care. Both types of critical incidents required sole responsibility from the nurse. The RNs acted due to ethics, 'walking the extra mile', searching for person-centred information, and finding out own knowledge barriers. Conclusions: In conclusion and based on this critical incident study, home-based healthcare of older people with multiple diagnoses requires a nurse that is prepared to take personal and moral responsibility to ensure person-centred home-based healthcare. Furthermore, the development of in-between adjustments of organizations to secure cooperation, and transference of person-centred knowledge is needed.
