  • Unified efficiency measurement of coal-fired power plants in China considering group heterogeneity and technological gaps
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy Economics. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0140-9883 .- 1873-6181. ; 88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • China's coal-fired power generation has accounted for a large proportion of the power supply for a long time and the resulting environmental pollution and waste of resources have hindered the sustainable development of the power industry. To solve this problem, this study combines the concept of natural and managerial disposability with the non-concave meta-frontier method to determine the unified efficiency measurement of 251 coal-fired power plants in China from 2012 to 2014 and to investigate the sources of inefficiency in different areas. The results show that although the unified efficiency of China's coal-fired power plants improved significantly during 2012–2014, much room for improvement remains in terms of power generation and environmental performance. Due to the advanced technology of coal-fired power plants, the eastern area has the highest unified efficiency in terms of natural and managerial disposability. The western region has the lowest operational performance and the northeast region has the lowest environmental performance. The decomposition of the sources of inefficiency indicates that the inefficiency of coal-fired power plants in eastern China is mainly caused by management factors, whereas the inefficiency in northeastern China is due to a lag in technology. In the central and western areas, technical inefficiency and management inefficiency both account for a considerable proportion in their sources of inefficiency. Therefore, these regions need to improve both the management (e.g., reasonable allocation of utilization hours) and technology (e.g., clean coal technology) aspects to improve the unified performance of coal-fired power plants.

  • A model-experience-driven method for the planning of refined product primary logistics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Science. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0009-2509 .- 1873-4405. ; 254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Logistics planning is regarded as the most complex part of supply chain management for refined products. A vital knowledge gap still exists in understanding the trade-offs between the economy and the practicability of logistics schemes. Focus on this issue, this paper proposes a model-experience-driven method for the planning of refined product primary logistics. The method couples three sub-modules: (1) use coordinator's preference information and convex function interpolation to construct satisfaction indicator; (2) set up a multi-objective model for logistics coordination and optimization considering supply adjustment and secondary delivery; (3) adopt the augmented ɛ-constraint method to obtain the Pareto solutions and balance the economy and satisfaction indicators. The method is verified by a small-scale system, where the satisfaction degree increases by 77% while the logistics cost remains unchanged. The method is also successfully applied to a large-scale system with 29 refineries and 196 market depots, where Pareto logistics schemes are obtained and the supply–demand imbalance is greatly eased. The proposed method can help provide theoretical guidance for real-world logistics planning.

  • Parameter optimization analysis of rotary electromagnetic vibration energy harvester for performance enhancement under free vibration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: iScience. - : Elsevier Inc.. - 2589-0042. ; 26:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, three new important aspects of rotary electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting technology (RE-VEH) are concerned and investigated: (i) vibro-electric coupling mechanism of the RE-VEH system is studied through theoretical modeling; (ii) quantitative analysis of system parameters based on numerical simulation method is carried out for the optimal design of RE-VEH; and (iii) dynamic power output performance of the RE-VEH system in free vibration is discussed. The parameter adjusting methods of the RE-VEH system in free vibration mode are obtained through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The experimental results show that the power output performance of RE-VEH in free vibration mode matches the numerical simulation results. The simulation and experimental results show that the maximum voltage output and power output of the RE-VEH with different structure parameters under free vibration can be up to the level of 100∼101 V/watt. The above results indicate that RE-VEH in a free vibration environment has significant energy output performance.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-temperature fuel cells and their hybrid systems represent one of the most promising technologies with high conversion efficiency. The configuration of such kind of system could facilitate an easy capture of CO2. Several novel CO2 capture strategies have been developed based on high-temperature fuel cells, such as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). However, related review which focus on their system integration and performance evaluation is still rare. The aim of this study is to improve interest in high-temperature fuel cell with CO2 capture by providing an overview of the status of such kind of cutting-edge technologies. To approach this goal, the major strategies and technologies for fuel cells and their hybrid system with CO2 capture have been reviewed. Simultaneously, the characteristics of fuel cell technologies are summarized and the technical and economic performance of the fuel cell with CO2 capture are explored and discussed as well. The existing challenges that required to be overcome in fuel cell with CO2 capture technology are highlighted with aspects on fuel cell module scale-up, cost, safety, reliability and capture energy, etc. Finally, opportunities for the future development of high-temperature fuel cell with CO2 capture technologies are discussed. The conclusion remarks of this investigation indicate that fuel cell integrating CO2 capture process is a promising route to sustainable future, and could even be more effective if fuel cell technology can be commercialized.

  • Power generation assessment of photovoltaic noise barriers across 52 major Chinese cities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photovoltaic noise barriers (PVNBs) have the potential to contribute to sustainable urban development by increasing the supply of renewable energy to cities while decreasing traffic noise pollution. However, estimating the power generation of PVNBs at the city or national scale remains a challenge due to the complexities of the urban environment and the difficulties associated with collecting data on road noise barriers (RNBs) and radiation. This study used RNBs, 2.5-dimensional (2.5D) buildings, and hourly time resolution radiation data, to estimate the power generation of PVNBs in 52 of China's major cities. First, hourly building shadows were estimated for each day of the year, covering the period from sunrise to sunset, to identify areas of RNB that are shaded at any given time. Second, hourly clear-sky radiation data were collected and corrected using a radiation correction model to simulate real weather radiation. Finally, utilizing an inclined surface radiation estimation model, the photovoltaic (PV) potential both inside and outside RNBs affected by building shadows was assessed. Subsequently, the power generation of PVNB was estimated based on parameters of mainstream PV systems in the market. The results show that the RNB mileage in 52 selected cities represents 87.7% of China's total RNB mileage. Building shadows often result in a radiation loss of approximately 30% for RNBs reception. The installed capacity and annual power generation of PVNBs in all investigated cities are 2.04 GW and 690.74 GWh, respectively. This study estimates the comprehensive PV potential of potentially exploitable PVNBs in China, offering essential scientific insights to inform and facilitate the strategic development of PVNB projects at both the national and municipal levels.

  • A variable damping vibration energy harvester based on Half-Wave flywheeling effect for freight railways
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mechanical systems and signal processing. - : Academic Press. - 0888-3270 .- 1096-1216. ; 200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vibrational energy, often considered a negative factor, is abundant in everyday life. Especially in railway systems, the negatively impacted track vibrations resulting from moving trains can be captured to provide a practical power supply solution for wireless sensor networks. This paper proposed a variable damping vibration energy harvester with a half-wave flywheel for a freight train-based railway. A double-sided rack as the input member converts the track vibration into the opposite rotation of the two pinions, which are then transmitted to the two parallel shafts respectively. According to the work characteristics of the one-way bearing, the upper and lower vibrations can be collected separately and output a one-way rotation to the generator module. The proposed harvester with a half-wave flywheel features a larger damping force for vibration reduction during the downward track vibration and a smaller damping force conducive to returning the track's original state during the upward track vibration. The experimental results achieve a maximum output power of 10.247 W and a maximum mechanical efficiency of 74.49%. Both simulations and experiments have verified that the proposed system with a half-wave flywheel can increase the damping force in the vibration reduction process and reduce the damping force in the reset process, which is characteristic of improving its power generation performance with a good vibration reduction effect. The VEH with the half-wave flywheel achieved an average power of 5.321 W at the train speed of 90 km/h under random vibration testing, which verifies the feasibility of self-powered wireless sensor networks in railway environments.

  • An electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting system based on series coupling input mechanism for freight railroads
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibration energy harvesting technology is characterized by wide distribution, is pollution-free and independent of weather and climate, and is suitable for powering low-power sensors to ensure efficient and safe operation in freight railroads. This paper proposed an electromagnetic vibration energy harvester based on a series coupling input mechanism for the self-powered sensors in freight railroads. The design utilizes only one rack for vibration energy input to minimize the moment acting on the vibration source during the working process. Two pinions meshed with the rack convert the up and down vibrations into a two-way rotation. The one-way bearings and another pair of gears convert the opposite rotations of two parallel shafts into one-way rotation of the generator shaft, generating electricity. Supercapacitors and rectifier voltage regulator modules are utilized to store electrical energy efficiently. A peak power of 10.219 W and maximum mechanical efficiency of 64.31% is obtained in the experiment equipped with a flywheel under the 8 mm-4 Hz sinusoidal vibration excitation. The experimental results showed that the flywheel can enable the proposed harvester to achieve better power generation performance when the amplitude and frequency are relatively high.

  • Carbon footprint of oil products pipeline transportation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 783
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As climate issues gradually attract public attention worldwide, the operation and construction of oil product pipelines have been attached with new energy-saving and emission-reduction targets. Though previous studies concerning Life Cycle Assessment of oil and gas pipelines have estimated the carbon footprint to some extent, there is a lack of researches that take the characteristics of oil products pipelines into consideration. Oil products pipelines undertake the task of delivering various products to downstream demand locations, which differs greatly from other pipeline transportation systems as back-to-back sequential delivery is adopted. In this paper, a detailed Life Cycle Assessment model is established to analyze carbon emissions of oil products pipeline system from construction to disposal as well as its impact on soil environment. Data from practical pipes is adopted as the case study to reflect emissions produced in different stages, and the amount of total and unified emissions of different pipes provided through the proposed model is within the range of 2.78 to 4.70 tCO2e/t·km. Then, sensitivity analysis is carried out to identify the driving factors of emissions. According to the calculation results, pipe length, diameter and throughput turn out to be the dominating factors, and an empirical formula is derived for future planned pipes. Relevant recommendations are put forward based on the results to help reduce emissions from oil product pipe transportation.

  • Using Existing Infrastructure to Realize Low-Cost and Flexible Photovoltaic Power Generation in Areas with High-Power Demand in China
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: iScience. - : Elsevier Inc.. - 2589-0042. ; 23:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy Policy; Energy Resources; Energy Systems; Energy Management © 2020 This study develops a new concept involving using the existing infrastructure for photovoltaic (PV) generation to reduce the costs associated with increased land use and to avoid curtailment due to the mismatch between power supply and demand. We establish a method to estimate the technological potential and economic performance of the PV systems deployed in coal-fired power plants in China. The potential capacity of the examined 1,082 units in China reaches 4 GWe, which is equivalent to 32% of China's newly installed distributed PV capacity in 2019. A total of 87% of PV systems achieve plant-side grid parity compared with desulfurized coal benchmark electricity prices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the use of rooftops and coal storage sheds in power plants to facilitate low-cost, flexible PV power generation, thus opening a new channel for future PV generation development.

  • Rural tourism network evaluation based on resource control ability analysis : A case study of Ning’an, China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-445X. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organization of rural tourism resources is important for optimizing rural land use based on rational resource classification. Quantitative analysis was performed to evaluate the resource control ability of rural tourism networks. This was achieved by determining the resource control relationship and assessing the structure of the rural tourism network. The ability of resource control was analyzed via resource abstraction, which included the extraction of resource nodes and corridors, control scope analysis, and network structure level evaluation. The proposed approach was applied to the Ning’an in Heilongjiang Province, China, and proved to be effective for exploring the network degree and development trends in rural tourism resources. By examining the resource control ability, the spatial characteristics and development trend in rural tourism networks were quantitatively analyzed, especially the connection mode of key tourism resources, network structure analysis, and resource linking ability. The core resources showed a lack of outward ability in the network, and the secondary resource expansion ability was limited. Via resource control ability analysis, this study focused on areas with rich tourism but an unbalanced spatial structure, combining the directional characteristics of the network to provide suggestions for the optimization rural tourism resources network in other regions of the world.
