- Cloud manufacturing is a new service-oriented manufacturing model that integrates distributed manufacturing resources to provide on-demand manufacturing services over the Internet. Service composition that builds larger-granularity, value-added services by combining a number of smaller-granularity services to satisfy consumers’ complex requirements is an important issue in cloud manufacturing. Meta-heuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and ant colony algorithm are frequently employed for addressing service composition issues in cloud manufacturing. However, these algorithms require complex design flows and lack adaptability to dynamic environment. Deep reinforcement learning provides an alternative approach for solving cloud manufacturing service composition issues. This chapter proposes a deep Q-network (DQN) based approach for service composition in cloud manufacturing, which is able to find optimal service composition solutions through repeated training and learning. Results of experiments that take into account changes of service scales and service unavailability reveal the scalability and robustness of the DQN algorithm-based service composition approach.

- We experimentally demonstrated a series of photonics-wireless transmissions in the 300–500 GHz band at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Zhejiang University (ZJU), with special efforts to drive the data rates beyond 100 Gbps and to extend the THz wireless reach by combining the techniques of state-of-the-art optoelectronic THz devices, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing.

- We present a compilation of reliable Precambrian paleomagnetic poles from three successive international workshops (in years 2009, 2014, 2017), comprising paleomagnetists specializing in Precambrian tectonic reconstructions. The working groups compiled lists of two global classes of poles, published through the end of 2017. “Grade-A” results are judged to provide essential constraints on tectonic reconstructions; “Grade-B” poles are judged to be suggestive of high-quality, but not yet demonstrated to be primary, or perhaps lacking precise geochronologic or other constraints. Our catalog documents a resurgence of high-quality data acquisition in recent years, and highlights specific cratons and time intervals that are most lacking in the data needed to reconstruct those blocks through supercontinental cycles.

- The cryosphere (including, snow, glaciers, permafrost, lake and river ice) is an integral element of high- mountain regions, which are home to roughly 10% of the global population. Widespread cryosphere changes affect physical, biological and human systems in the mountains and surrounding lowlands, with impacts evident even in the ocean. Building on the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), this chapter assesses new evidence on observed recent and projected changes in the mountain cryosphere as well as associated impacts, risks and adaptation measures related to natural and human systems. Impacts in response to climate changes independently of changes in the cryosphere are not assessed in this chapter. Polar mountains are included in Chapter 3, except those in Alaska and adjacent Yukon, Iceland, and Scandinavia, which are included in this chapter.
