    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge 2015, VOT2015, aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 62 trackers are presented. The number of tested trackers makes VOT 2015 the largest benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the appendix. Features of the VOT2015 challenge that go beyond its VOT2014 predecessor are: (i) a new VOT2015 dataset twice as large as in VOT2014 with full annotation of targets by rotated bounding boxes and per-frame attribute, (ii) extensions of the VOT2014 evaluation methodology by introduction of a new performance measure. The dataset, the evaluation kit as well as the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

    • In this work, the effect of Re alloying on the phase composition, crystal structure, and mechanical properties of NbMoTaWRex (x = 0, 0.27, 0.57, 0.92, 1.33) refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) were systematically investigated by combining the calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD), first-principle calculations and experiment. The theoretical predictions showed good consistency with the experimental results. As the increase in Re content, the theoretical results showed that all considered alloys have a single body-centered cubic (bcc) structure and the lattice constant and ductility were decreased, while the elastic moduli and hardness were improved. To avoid extreme brittleness, a strategic suggestion was given for the design of Re-containing RHEAs in the future.

    • In this paper, we study the uplink of a relay- assisted multiuser massive MIMO system. The relay station (RS) equipped with M1 antennas processes the received signal from K single-antenna users, using maximum ratio combining (MRC)/zero-forcing (ZF) detection, and then forwards the post- processed signal to the base station (BS) with M2 antennas, according to the all-pass relay protocol. In particular, we derive closed-form approximations of the ergodic achievable rate lower bounds, assuming that MRC/ZF combining is performed at the BS. Furthermore, we examine the power scaling law of the proposed system, and find that the transmit powers of relay or users can be reduced in proportion to M1 or M2, respectively, without any loss in the achievable rate.

  • Performance optimization of a coaxial-cylinder wave energy converter

    • To achieve a wider frequency range where the device has a larger capture width ratio, the performance of a heaving coaxial-cylinder wave energy converter is optimized through actively controlled generator damping and stiffness using a linear frequency domain model. The generator power take-off system is modeled as a damping-spring system, and the numerical model is validated against published results. The coupled dynamics of a two-body model is analyzed to search for the optimal generator damping and stiffness leading to maximal capture width ratio. The optimization process, which can be decoupled into two independent steps, leads to an improved performance of the device, with increased frequency bandwidth and better capture width ratio. The effects of water depth, mooring stiffness, and the dimensions of the WEC on the capture width ratio are also studied, and parameter values are identified which correspond to optimal performance of the device.

    • Heterogeneous integration of InP and GaSb on Si substrates holds a huge potential interest in near-infrared and mid-infrared optoelectronic devices. In this study, 2-inch 180-nm-thick InP and 185-nm-thick GaSb thin layers were successfully transferred onto the Si substrates to form high-quality and ultra-smooth InP/Si and GaSb/Si templates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and the ion-slicing technique together with selective chemical etching. The relocation of the implantation-introduced damage in the sacrificial layer enables the transfer of relatively defect-free InP and GaSb thin films. The sacrificial layers were completely etched off by selective chemical etching, leaving ultra-smooth epitaxial surfaces with a roughness of 0.2 nm for the InP/Si template and 0.9 nm for the GaSb/Si template, respectively. Thus, the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was not required to smooth the surface which usually introduces particles and chemical contaminations on the transferred templates. Furthermore, the donor substrate is not consumed and can be recycled to reduce the cost, which provides a paradigm for the sustainable and economic development of the Si integration platform.

    • Quantum dot (QD) laser as a light source for silicon optical integration has attracted great research attention because of the strategic vision of optical interconnection. In this paper, the communication band InAs QD ridge waveguide lasers were fabricated on GaAs-on-insulator (GaAsOI) substrate by combining ion-slicing technique and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth. On the foundation of optimizing surface treatment processes, the InAs/In0.13Ga0.87As/GaAs dot-in-well (DWELL) lasers monolithically grown on a GaAsOI substrate were realized under pulsed operation at 20 °C. The static device measurements reveal comparable performance in terms of threshold current density, slope efficiency and output power between the QD lasers on GaAsOI and GaAs substrates. This work shows great potential to fabricate highly integrated light source on Si for photonic integrated circuits.

    • Single-crystal LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (SC-NMC) cathode with electro-chemo-mechanically compliant microstructure is regarded as a promising candidate for high-energy-density lithium ion battery. However, the research of Ni-rich SC-NCM still lags behind its corresponding polycrystalline cathode materials, mainly due to the difficulties in synthesis. Herein, the single-crystal LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode (SC-NCM811) was successfully synthesized by microfluidic technology combined with the solid-state lithiation process. The nano-sized Ni0.8C- o0.1Mn0.1(OH)2 precursor prepared via microfluidic technology enhances its accessibility to lithium salts, thus exhibiting high chemical activity for lithiation reaction. As a result, the optimized SC-NCM811 cathode shows relatively small-scale grain size (<3 mu m), low cation mixing and well layered structure, which is beneficial to electrochemical kinetics and redox reversibility. The electrochemical characterization results further reveal that the optimized SC-NCM811 cathode can well balance the cycle performance and rate capability, showing good electrochemical performance. Overall, microfluidic technology is expected to provide a new strategy for pre-paring single-crystal Ni-rich cathode materials, which may extend to the commercial application of other cathode materials.
