  • Ten cities cross-sectional questionnaire survey of children asthma and other allergies in China
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chinese Science Bulletin. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1001-6538 .- 1861-9541. ; 58:34, s. 4182-4189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Asthma, rhinitis and eczema (allergic or non-allergic) have increased throughout the world during the last decades, especially among children. Changes in the indoor environment are suspected to be important causes. China has experienced a dramatic change in indoor environmental exposures during the past two decades. However, such changes and their associations with children's asthma and other health aspects have not been thoroughly studied. China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH), Phase I, was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 48219 children 1-8 years old in 10 Chinese cities during 2010-2012. The questionnaire includes the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) core health questions and additional questions regarding housing, life habits and outdoor environment. In health analyses, children aged 3-6 years old were included. The prevalences of doctor diagnosed asthma varied from 1.7% to 9.8% (mean 6.8%), a large increase from 0.91% in 1999 and 1.50% in 2000. The prevalence of wheeze, rhinitis and atopic eczema (last 12 months) varied from 13.9% to 23.7%, 24.0% to 50.8% and 4.8% to 15.8%, respectively. Taiyuan had the lowest prevalences of all illnesses and Shanghai the highest, except for wheezewhere the highest value was for Urumqi. We found (1) no obvious association between disease prevalences and ambient PM10 concentrations and (2) higher prevalences of disease in humid climates with hot summers and cold winters, but with no centrally heated buildings. Associations between the diseases and economic status as indexed by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) requires further study.

  • All-VCSEL Transmitters With Remote Optical Injection for WDM-OFDM-PON
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 26:5, s. 461-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a novel scheme that uses vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and remote optical injection technique in the hybrid wavelength division multiplexing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network. In the proposed scheme, 1.55-μm VCSELs are used as low-cost, directly modulated upstream and downstream transmitters. The slave VCSEL at the optical network unit is remotely injection-locked by modulated downstream signals, and no need for additional injection-locking optical sources and external modulators. In our experiment, bidirectional transmission of 1.25 Gb/s 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4QAM)-OFDM signal over 26-km single mode fiber has been successfully demonstrated. Moreover, we investigate the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) caused by the conversion of injected AM into slave AM. In addition, the experimental results show that due to this RAM, the power penalty of the 1.25 Gb/s 4QAM-OFDM upstream transmission is deteriorated by 2 dB.

  • Alternative protocols for the production of more sustainable agar-based extracts from Gelidium sesquipedale
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Algal Research. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2211-9264. ; 55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agar-based extracts from Gelidium sesquipedale were obtained by applying a conventional hot water treatment and alternative ultrasound- and microwave-assisted methods, with and without the application of an alkaline pre-treatment. The alkaline pre-treatment produced refined extracts with higher purity; however, extraction yields increased from 2–5% to 7–19% by omitting this step. In particular, the ultrasound-assisted extraction allowed reducing 4-fold the extraction time, while keeping constant or even increasing the yield (up to 19% for the 1 h extraction) with respect to the conventional protocol. Interestingly, the presence of proteins and polyphenols conferred the semi-refined extracts a relatively high antioxidant capacity (19–24 μmol TE/g extract). The refined extract produced by the standard protocol formed the strongest hydrogels (>1000 g/cm2). On the other hand, the semi-refined extracts produced by the alternative protocols formed slightly stronger hydrogels (337–438 g/cm2) than the refined counterparts (224–311 g/cm2), due to their greater molecular weights of the former ones. LCA assessment showed lower global warming potential for the semi-refined extracts, especially the ultrasound-assisted extraction, hence highlighting the potential of this method to produce more sustainable agar-based extracts for food-related applications.
