  • GRB 030227 : The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361. ; 411:1, s. 315-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected byINTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~ 1.7days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim opticalafterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previoussearches due to its faintess (R ~ 23). This OA was seen to declinefollowing a power law decay with index alpha R = -0.95 +/-0.16. The spectral index beta_ opt/NIR yielded -1.25 +/- 0.14. Thesevalues may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball (withp = 2.0) in the cooling regime. We also find evidence for inverseCompton scattering in X-rays.Based on observations with INTEGRAL, an ESA project with instruments andscience data centre funded by ESA member states (especially the PIcountries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain), CzechRepublic and Poland, and with the participation of Russia and the USA.Also partially based on observations collected by the Gamma-Ray BurstCollaboration at ESO (GRACE) at the European Southern Observatory, Chile(ESO Large Programme 165.H-0464).

  • Variants of CYP46A1 may interact with age and APOE to influence CSF Abeta42 levels in Alzheimer's disease.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Human genetics. - 0340-6717. ; 114:6, s. 581-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have suggested that variants of CYP46A1, encoding cholesterol 24-hydroxylase (CYP46), confer risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a prospect substantiated by evidence of genetic association from several quantitative traits related to AD pathology, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the 42 amino-acid cleavage product of beta-amyloid (Abeta42) and the tau protein. In the present study, these claims have been explored by the genotyping of previously associated markers in CYP46A1 in three independent northern European case-control series encompassing 1323 individuals and including approximately 400 patients with measurements of CSF Abeta42 and phospho-tau protein levels. Tests of association in case-control models revealed limited evidence that CYP46A1 variants contributed to AD risk across these samples. However, models testing for potential effects upon CSF measures suggested a possible interaction of an intronic marker (rs754203) with age and APOE genotype. In stratified analyses, significant effects were evident that were restricted to elderly APOE epsilon4 carriers for both CSF Abeta42 ( P=0.0009) and phospho-tau ( P=0.046). Computational analyses indicate that the rs754203 marker probably does not impact the binding of regulatory factors, suggesting that other polymorphic sites underlie the observed associations. Our results provide an important independent replication of previous findings, supporting the existence of CYP46A1 sequence variants that contribute to variability in beta-amyloid metabolism.

  • Extra-intestinal manifestations associated with irritable bowel syndrome : a twin study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 16:5, s. 975-983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of genetic and environmental factors in irritable bowel syndrome. Various extra-intestinal manifestations are more prevalent in cases than in controls. Genetic effects may be important in the liability to develop functional bowel disorders. AIMS: To evaluate the associations of irritable bowel syndrome with several disorders co-morbid with the condition, using both a case-control design and a co-twin control design. METHODS: A sample of 850 Swedish twin pairs, aged 18-85 years, was contacted for a telephone interview. Through a diagnostic algorithm, 72 unrelated cases of irritable bowel syndrome and 216 age- and gender-matched controls were identified. Fifty-eight twin pairs discordant for irritable bowel syndrome were evaluated in co-twin analyses. RESULTS: Renal problems (odds ratio (OR)=3.3; confidence interval (CI), 1.3-8.2), obesity (OR=2.6; CI, 1.0-6.4), underweight in the past (OR=2.4; CI, 1.1-6.4), gluten intolerance (OR=9.0; CI, 1.4-60.1), rheumatoid arthritis (OR=3.2; CI, 1.1-9.4) and poor self-rated health (OR=1.8; CI, 1.0-3.2) were significantly associated with irritable bowel syndrome. In the co-twin analyses, the only factors maintaining significance were renal and recurrent urinary tract problems. CONCLUSIONS: The association between irritable bowel syndrome and renal and urinary tract problems does not reflect a genetic or familial mediation. Eating disorders in childhood represent a familial-environmental influence on irritable bowel syndrome, whereas the association with rheumatoid arthritis and perhaps gluten intolerance probably reflects genetic mediation.

  • Structural features and adsorption behaviour of mesoporous silica particles formed from droplets generated in a spraying chamber
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Microporous and Mesoporous Materials. - 1387-1811 .- 1873-3093. ; 72, s. 175-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spherical mesoporous particles have been produced by spraying hydrolysed alkoxide solutions containing templating amphiphilic molecules. The modified spray drying method produces up to 10 g/h of spherical non-hollow particles with a size of 1–5 m. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that well ordered internal 2D hexagonal mesostructures could be prepared using both nonionic block copolymers and cationic surfactants as the templating molecules. Disordered cubic and well ordered lamellar, onion like, particles were prepared from the block copolymer templates. Nitrogen sorption data and mercury porosimetry show that pore size distribution of the mesoporous particles is very narrow with pore sizes varying from 2.5 to 8.5 nm as a function of templating amphiphiles. We have shown that the mesoscopic pores are accessible after calcination and can be filled with relatively large molecules; the particles adsorbed more than 20% (by weight) of the cationic dye Janus Green B from aqueous solutions.

  • Multi-spacecraft observations of broadband waves near the lower hybrid frequency at the Earthward edge of the magnetopause
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 19:12-okt, s. 1471-1481
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Broadband waves around the lower hybrid frequency (around 10 Hz) near the magnetopause are studied, using the four Cluster satellites. These waves are common at the Earthward edge of the boundary layer, consistent with earlier observations, and can have amplitudes at least up to 5 mV/m. These waves are similar on all four Cluster satellites, i.e. they are likely to be distributed over large areas of the boundary. The strongest electric fields occur during a few seconds, i.e. over distances of a few hundred km in the frame of the moving magnetopause, a scale length comparable to the ion gyroradius. The strongest magnetic oscillations in the same frequency range are typically found in the boundary layer, and across the magnetopause. During an event studied in detail, the magnetopause velocity is consistent with a large-scale depression wave, i.e. an inward bulge of magnetosheath plasma, moving tailward along the nominal magnetopause boundary. Preliminary investigations indicate that a rather flat front side of the large-scale wave is associated with a rather static small-scale electric field, while a more turbulent backside of the large-scale wave is associated with small-scale time varying electric field wave packets.
