  • Early post-traumatic changes in hemodynamics and pulmonary ventilation in alcohol-pretreated pigs
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Journal of Trauma. - 0022-5282. ; 27:1, s. 40-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time relations among trauma, pulmonary and systemic circulation, and lung function were studied in pigs. Eleven animals (b.w. 25-30 kg) were investigated under balanced anesthesia. Ventilation was mechanically controlled. Hemodynamics, pulmonary ventilation, and gas exchange were serially recorded. Seven animals were pretreated with 40% ethanol in saline and four with saline only. Ninety minutes after the ingestion of alcohol or saline, the animals were subjected to a standardized soft-tissue trauma. Cardiac output decreased significantly 2 minutes after trauma and remained low in both groups throughout the observation period of 30 minutes. Pulmonary vascular resistance was significantly increased in the alcohol-pretreated group but was virtually unchanged in the control animals. Systemic vascular resistance was similarly reduced in the two groups. Total compliance was somewhat lower in alcohol-pretreated animals and 10 minutes after the trauma arterial oxygen tension was significantly lower in the alcohol group than in control animals. Carbon dioxide elimination was reduced after trauma in both groups. It is concluded that pulmonary vascular response increased and that total pulmonary compliance is somewhat decreased shortly after trauma in the alcohol group while gas exchange is almost unchanged. The results indicate a negative interaction between alcohol and trauma

  • Flow and distribution of chromium in the Swedish environment: A new approach to studying environmental pollution
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 18:4, s. 216-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Point source emission from industrial production processes has been themajor focus of environmental concern in the past. In this article it isargued that the accumulating amount of goods/products in societyshould also be focused on in the future. From these goods substances willsooner or later be leached out to the environment. A case study usingchromium in Sweden is presented in this paper as one example of asubstance that may accumulate in the environment. Total flows ofchromium for the 20th century, based on trade statistics, production ofgoods and persistence of products in the environment are estimated. Itwas found that yearly consumption emissions are higher than the productionemissions, i.e. point source emissions from different industries.

  • A reconstruction of emission, flow and accumulation of chromium in Sweden 1920-1980
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Water, Air and Soil Pollution. - 0049-6979 .- 1573-2932. ; 48, s. 391-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A reconstruction of Cr emissions in Sweden is presented. Estimations of total flows for 1920in 1980 were based on trade statistics, production of goods and life-length of products in society. Asimple model was used to calculate amounts of Cr accumulated in soil and sediment at different times. The importance of production emissions from tanneries and ferrochrome and steel plants is obvious, but, in the future, diffuse emissions of the same magnitude may occur from Cr products within urbanareas.

  • The dispersal pattern of an anthropochorous species: Genetic variation in populations of Lumbricus terrestris L. (Lumbricidae) in the Faroe Islands
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Hereditas. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0018-0661 .- 1601-5223. ; 104:2, s. 253-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ten populations of the anthropochorous Lumbricus terrestris L. (Lumbricidae) from six islands in the Faroes were scored for enzyme variation by electrophoresis. The allele frequencies were analyzed by cluster analysis and information entropy relationships. There was a significant heterogeneity in allele frequencies among the samples. Four groups could be distinguished in the cluster analysis of which one was larger (at least five sites); two sites were defined as outliers. Information entropy showed that the allele frequency data were structured differently over the sites and that the most non-random site was also one of the outliers in the cluster space. The main group in the cluster analysis also forms a geographically central group in the islands. These results are discussed against the known colonization history of the Faroes. It is concluded that the genetic variation pattern does not indicate any single point of invasion of L. terrestris into the islands. Rather, it shows that former and present-day communications between the islands are responsible for similarities and dissimilarities in genetic variation in the L. terrestris populations.
