- The quadrupole moments and deformations have been measured for six superdeformed bands in Gd-150. The results indicate evidence for deformation driving properties of both the high-hi intruder and also low-N natural parity states at the superdeformed Fermi surface. Several new transitions have been identified and placed in the low spin non-yrast portion of one of the SD bands.

Decay-out of the yrast superdeformed band in Nd-136 : Towards an experimental extraction of the neutron pairing gap at large deformation

- A study of the Nd-136 nucleus has been performed with the EUROBALL III multidetector to establish the decay-out of the yrast superdeformed (SD) band. Three discrete linking transitions (754, 1456, and 1493 keV) have been discovered, establishing the position of the SD band at 7.03 MeV excitation energy with proposed spin and parity 17((-)) for the lowest observed SD state. Neutron pairing gap parameters for SD shapes have been extracted in Nd isotopes, using the strong-coupling model and odd-even mass difference formulas. The major conclusion of our phenomenological analysis is that the pairing correlations do subsist in the SD configurations of nuclei in the A = 130 mass region. [S0556-2813(99)01312-6].

- The nucleus Os-171 has been populated using the reaction Sn-116(Ni-58,2pn). Four new bands are identified, and the previously known bands are extended in spin, to a maximum of 53/2 (h) over bar. One- and three-quasiparticle configurations are identified, and beta, gamma, and octupole configurations are assigned tentatively. The effects of a possible intruder configuration on the negative parity bands are tested using band-mixing calculations.

Coexistence of triaxial and prolate shapes in Ir-171

- Excited states in Ir-171 have been observed for the first time. Gamma-rays were assigned to the nucleus by the recoil-decay tagging method, The ground-state band has a structure consistent with an h(11/2) proton coupled to a core of large triaxial deformation. At high spins, a bandcrossing occurs which is interpreted as a change in shape to a prolate deformation, Band-mixing calculations are performed for Ir171-175. These show that shape-coexistence between triaxial and prolate states in these nuclei follows the same systematics found in their Pt and Os neighbours. The systematics are also compared with deformations calculated for Ir171-179 using the code "Ultimate Cranker". Dipole bands were also observed, but tilted axis cranking calculations suggest that they are associated with a collective rotation.

- A spectroscopic study of Sb-108 has been carried out as a part of a larger experiment where in total twenty-nine different residual nuclei were identified. This study gives the first information on excited levels in this nucleus. A low-lying two-quasi-particle multiplet together with some of the higher lying levels are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. A rotational, strongly coupled, band is identified as, most likely, being built on the deformed pig9/2(-1) nuh11/2 configuration in accordance with total routhian surface calculations. Tentative spins and parities are presented as well as B(M1)/B(E2) ratios for some of the transitions in the strongly coupled band.

- Excited states have been identified for the first time in very neutron deficient Pt-171.172 nuclei using the recoil-or-decay tagging technique. The ground-state band in Pt-172 has been established up to I-pi = 8+. A similar level sequence, presumably built on the I-pi = 13/2(+) state, is observed for Pt-171. The data are compared with theoretical calculations based on the mean field approach and the random phase approximation and are put into the context of the systematics of platinum isotopes. Superdeformation in bismuth

- High angular momentum states in Bi-195-197 are populated in two reactions: W-183(F-19,xn)Bi-202-x and Ta-181(Ne-20,xn)Bi-201-x at beam energies of 108 and 123 MeV, respectively. Gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. Three weakly populated rotational sequences have been found. They each have properties characteristic of other superdeformed bands in this mass region. On the basis of cross-bombardment information we believe that one band belongs to each of Bi-195, Bi-196, and Bi-197. The properties of the bands in the odd-Bi nuclei are best reproduced if the odd proton occupies the favored signature of the [651]1/2 orbital, while the band in Bi-196 has this same proton configuration coupled to an additional N=7 (j(15/2)) neutron. The relative behavior of the J((2)) moments of inertia can be qualitatively understood in terms of Pauli-blocking effects.
