  • The ATLAS semiconductor tracker end-cap module
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 575:3, s. 353-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenges for the tracking detector systems at the LHC are unprecedented in terms of the number of channels, the required read-out speed and the expected radiation levels. The ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker. (SCT) end-caps have a total of about 3 million electronics channels each reading out every 25 ns into its own on-chip 3.3 mu s buffer. The highest anticipated dose after 10 years operation is 1.4x10(14) cm(-2) in units of 1 MeV neutron equivalent (assuming the damage factors scale with the non-ionising energy loss). The forward tracker has 1976 double-sided modules, mostly of area similar to 70 cm(2), each having 2 x 768 strips read out by six ASICs per side. The requirement to achieve an average perpendicular radiation length of 1.5% X-0, while coping with up to 7 W dissipation per module (after irradiation), leads to stringent constraints on the thermal design. The additional requirement of 1500e(-) equivalent noise charge (ENC) rising to only 1800e(-) ENC after irradiation, provides stringent design constraints on both the high-density Cu/Polyimide flex read-out circuit and the ABCD3TA read-out ASICs. Finally, the accuracy of module assembly must not compromise the 16 mu m (r phi) resolution perpendicular to the strip directions or 580 mu m radial resolution coming from the 40 mrad front-back stereo angle. A total of 2210 modules were built to the tight tolerances and specifications required for the SCT. This was 234 more than the 1976 required and represents a yield of 93%. The component flow was at times tight, but the module production rate of 40-50 per week was maintained despite this. The distributed production was not found to be a major logistical problem and it allowed additional flexibility to take advantage of where the effort was available, including any spare capacity, for building the end-cap modules. The collaboration that produced the ATLAS SCT end-cap modules kept in close contact at all times so that the effects of shortages or stoppages at different sites could be rapidly resolved.

  • Two-Step synthesis of Achiral Dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes with outstanding antimalarial activity, low toxicity, and high-stability profiles
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-2623 .- 1520-4804. ; 51:7, s. 2170-2177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapid, two step synthesis of a range of dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes with potent antimalarial activity both in vitro and in vivo has been achieved. These 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes have been proven to be superior to 1,2,4-trioxolanes in terms of stability and to be superior to trioxane analogues in terms of both stability and activity. Selected analogues have in vitro nanomolar antimalarial activity, good oral activity and are non-toxic in screens for both cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The synthesis of a fluorescent NBD-tagged tetraoxane probe has allowed investigation into the mechanism of accumulation of these drugs using laser scanning confocal microscopy techniques.

  • A Sauron Study of Stars and Gas in SA Bulges
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Island Universes.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present results from our ongoing effort to understand the morphological and kinematical properties of early-type galaxies using the integral-field spectrograph SAURON. We discuss the relation between the stellar and gas morphology and kinematics in our sub-sample of 24 representative Sa spiral bulges. We focus on the frequency of kinematically decoupled components and on the presence of star formation in circumnuclear rings.

  • HomeRuleML : a model for the exchange of decision support rules within smart environments
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering, 2007. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 1424411548 - 9781424411542 ; , s. 513-520
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The demands for smart environments, which can help to facilitate as well as monitor independent living are increasing. With this comes a desire for decision support rules to process data recorded from such environments. However, testing and evaluating rules can be both time-consuming and indeed stressful for the inhabitants. Within this paper we propose a model, referred to as HomeRuleML, for representing decision support rules for smart environments. The motivating factor behind such a proposal is to provide a widely and freely accessible set of rules which can be openly used and exchanged within the research domain and beyond. This model has the potential to decrease the time required for deployment, and inevitability improve the inhabitants' quality of life. In the paper we explain in detail the structure of adopting this approach and also provide an indication of the typical types of software tools required for its use.

  • Localisation of forgotten items using RFID technology
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 9th International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424453788 ; , s. 310-313
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The frequency with which items are misplaced increases with age, leading to increased frustration and anxiety especially for those who develop cognitive impairments such as dementia. Providing ICT support to assist with relocating items can significantly contribute to sustain independent living. In this paper we present a method for locating RFID tagged items throughout a home environment. Specifically, items are located by comparing and analysing signal strength, received from tagged items, with that received from anumber of fixed location reference tags. This paper presents experiments which have been performed within a typical living environment using homogeneous and practical placement of reference tags. This is performed to consider the feasibility of RFID positioning in such environments. Results obtained indicate that the approach provides acceptable location estimation in pervasive environments with sparsely placed reference tags, however, further investigation is required to accurately quantify its value

  • Evaluation of mobile and home based cognitive prosthetics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Smart Homes and Health Telematics. - Berlin : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783540699149 ; , s. 18-25
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Those suffering from mild dementia exhibit impairments of memory, thought and reasoning. It has been recognised that the deployment of technological solutions to address such impairments may have a major positive impact on quality of life. In the current paper we present results from the CogKnow Project following the evaluation of a suite of mobile and home based cognitive prosthetics to assist persons suffering from mild dementia. The results following an evaluation of the technology conducted with 16 people with mild dementia (and their carers) across 3 different trial sites are outlined. The paper concludes with details describing the process by which the outcomes of the evaluation will be used to guide the developments of a second generation of both mobile and home based cognitive prosthetic.

  • Home-based assistive technologies for persons with mild dementia
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Pervasive Computing for Quality of Life Enhancement. - Berlin : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783540730347 ; , s. 63-69
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Those suffering from mild dementia exhibit impairments of memory, thought and reasoning. It has been recognised that deployment of technological solutions to address such impairments may have a major positive impact on the quality of life and can be used to help perform daily life activities hence maintaining a level of independence. In this paper we present an overview of our current investigations into how technology can be used to improve the quality of life of the ageing person with mild dementia. Specifically, we detail the methodology adopted for our work, outline results attained from a series of workshops to identify user needs and finally present how these user needs have been mapped onto the design of home based assistive technologies.

  • homeML - an open standard for the exchange of data within smart environments
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Pervasive Computing for Quality of Life Enhancement. - Berlin : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783540730347 ; , s. 121-129
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work describes a potential solution to the problems caused by the heterogeneous nature of the data which may be collected within smart home environments. Such information may be generated at an intra- or interinstitutional level following laboratory testing or based on in-situ evaluations. We offer a solution to this problem in the form of a system/application/format independent means of storing such data. This approach will inevitably support the exchange of data within the research community and form the basis of the establishment of an openly accessible data repository. Within this abstract we present the outline design of homeML, an XML based schema for representation of information within smart homes and through exemplars demonstrate the potential of such an approach. An example of the typical type of software browser required for the data representation is also presented.
