  • Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 15-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muon pair production in the process e+e- → e+e- μ+μ- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (√s ≃ mz) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb-1. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV2/c4 to several hundred GeV2/c4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function Fγ 2. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, Fγ A and Fγ B, which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes. The measured ratios Fγ A/Fγ 2 and FγB/Fγ 2 are significantly different from zero and consistent with QED predictions.

  • Measurement of the gluon fragmentation function and a comparison of the scaling violation in gluon and quark jets
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 13:4, s. 573-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons are measured in various three-jet topologies in Z decays from the full data set collected with the DELPHI detector at the Z resonance between 1992 and 995. The results at different values of transverse momentum-like scales are compared. A parameterization of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions at a fixed reference scale is given. The quark and gluon fragmentation functions show the predicted pattern of scaling violations. The scaling violation for quark jets as a function of a transverse momentum-like scale is in a good agreement with that observed in lower energy e+e- annihilation experiments. For gluon jets it appears to be significantly stronger. The scale dependences of the gluon and quark fragmentation functions agree with the prediction of the DGLAP evolution equations from which the colour factor ratio CA/CF is measured to be: CA/CF = 2.26 ± 0.09stat. ± 0.06sys. ± 0.12clus.,scale..

  • Search for sleptons in e+e- collisions at √s = 183 to 189 GeV
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 29-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃0 2 → ℓγx̃0 1), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.

  • Calibration and survey of AMANDA with the SPASE detectors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 522:3, s. 347-359

    • We report on the analysis of air showers observed in coincidence by the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino detector array (AMANDA-B10) and the South Pole Air Shower Experiment (SPASE-1 and SPASE-2). We discuss the use of coincident events for calibration and survey of the deep AMANDA detector as well as the response of AMANDA to muon bundles. This analysis uses data taken during 1997 when both SPASE-1 and SPASE-2 were in operation to provide a stereo view of AMANDA. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Measurement of the cosmic ray composition at the knee with the SPASE-2/AMANDA-B10 detectors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 21:6, s. 565-581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mass composition of high-energy cosmic rays at energies above 1015 eV can provide crucial information for the understanding of their origin. Air showers were measured simultaneously with the SPASE-2 air shower array and the AMANDA-B10 Cherenkov telescope at the South Pole. This combination has the advantage to sample almost all high-energy shower muons and is thus a new approach to the determination of the cosmic ray composition. The change in the cosmic ray mass composition was measured versus existing data from direct measurements at low energies. Our data show an increase of the mean log atomic mass 〈lnA〉 by about 0.8 between 500 TeV and 5 PeV. This trend of an increasing mass through the "knee" region is robust against a variety of systematic effects. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Population dynamics and stage structure in a haploid-diploid red seaweed, Gracilaria gracilis
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0022-0477. ; 89:3, s. 436-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1 Many red seaweeds are characterized by a haploid-diploid life cycle in which populations consist of dioecious haploid (gametophyte) and diploid (tetrasporophyte) individuals as well as an additional diploid zygote-derived sporangium (carposporophyte) stage. A demographic analysis of Gracilaria gracilis populations was carried out to explore and evaluate the population dynamics and stage structure of a typical haploid-diploid red seaweed. 2 Four G. gracilis populations were studied at two sites on the French coast of the Strait of Dover, Survival, reproduction and recruitment rates were measured in each population for up to 4 years. Eight two-sex stage-based population projection matrices were built to describe their demography. 3 All four populations were characterized by high survival and low recruitment rates. Population growth rates (lambda) were similar between populations and between years and ranged from 1.03 to 1,17, In addition, generation times were found to be as long as 42 years. 4 Sex and ploidy ratios were variable across populations and over time. Female frequencies ranged from 0.31 to 0.59 and tetrasporophyte frequencies from 0.44 to 0.63. However, in most cases, the observed population structures were not significantly different from the calculated stage distributions. 5 Eigenvalue elasticity analysis showed that lambda was most sensitive to changes in matrix transitions that corresponded to survival of the gametophyte and tetrasporophyte stages. In contrast, the contribution of the fertility elements to lambda was small. Eigenvector elasticity analysis also showed that survival elements had the greatest impact on sex and ploidy ratios.

  • Neonatal herpes simplex virus type 1 brain infection affects the development of sensorimotor gating in rats.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Brain research. - 0006-8993. ; 863:1-2, s. 233-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of neonatal brain infection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on the development of sensorimotor function in the rat was investigated using an acoustic startle paradigm. Intracerebral inoculation of HSV-1 at day 2 after birth, but not at day 4, caused a significant delay in the development of prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle. A decrease in prepulse inhibition was shown at 37, 46 and 58 days of age in these rats compared to control rats. No evidence was obtained for other behavioural dysfunctions such as differences in sensorimotor reactivity, sensorimotor response habituation, spontaneous locomotor activity, rearing activity or stereotyped behaviour. Prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle is an accepted model of sensorimotor gating in the CNS, a function which has been shown diminished in schizophrenic persons. The present results suggest that early viral infections during a neurone-susceptible period may contribute to the development of this deficit.
