  • New lightweight metal-composite-metal panel for applications in the automotive and other industries
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Thin-walled structures. - : Elsevier. - 0263-8231 .- 1879-3223. ; 36:4, s. 289-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new lightweight metal-composite-metal (MCM) panel is developed. This panel consists of two layers of 0.2-mm thick stainless steel sheet with a layer of woven fabric (semi-flexible composite) in between. The stiffness and the dent resistance of this MCM-panel are compared to those of corresponding panels pressed in 1-mm thick aluminum, 0.8-mm thick carbon steel and 0.8-mm thick stainless steel sheets. Compared to the aluminum panel, the MCM-panel exhibits a slightly smaller stiffness. However, the MCM-panel displays a larger dent resistance than the aluminum and the carbon steel panels. The new panel is 46% heavier than the aluminum panel. However, it is 60% lighter than the carbon and stainless steel panels. This new panel is expected to have many applications in manufacturing of parts for car, train and bus bodies, appliances and household machines. Machine chassis and air cargo containers are other examples of products, in which the new panel can be used. Production of the new panel requires that the tools be heated. The cycle time is short, since a newly developed and patented method for ultra-rapid heating of tools has been used in this study. The production is economical, since the cycle times is short and recycled fibres can be used. The production process is not completely optimized yet. However, the conducted experiments show that the panel stiffness and dent resistance are benefitted, if the tool pressure applied during the heating is low.

  • Immunisation of metastatic cancer patients with MAGE-3 protein combined with adjuvant SBAS-2 : A clinical report
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - 0959-8049 .- 1879-0852. ; 39:1, s. 70-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fifty-seven patients with MAGE-3-positive measurable metastatic cancer, most of them with melanoma, were vaccinated with escalating doses of a recombinant MAGE-3 protein combined with a fixed dose of the immunological adjuvant SBAS-2, which contained MPL and QS21. The immunisation schedule included 4 intramuscular (i.m.) injections at 3-week intervals. Patients whose tumour stabilised or regressed after 4 vaccinations received 2 additional vaccinations at 6-week intervals. The vaccine was generally well tolerated. Among the 33 melanoma patients who were evaluable for tumour response, we observed 2 partial responses, 2 mixed responses and 1 stabilisation. Time to progression in these 5 patients varied from 4 to 29 months. In addition, a partial response lasting 10 months was observed in 1 of the 3 metastatic bladder cancer patients included. None of the tumour responses described above involved visceral metastases. Immunological responses to the vaccine will be reported separately. ⌐ 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Pin and play : The surface as network medium
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 41:4, s. 90-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrating appliances in the home through a wired network often proves to he impractical: routing cables is usually difficult, changing the network structure afterward even more so, and portable devices can only be connected at fixed connection points. Wireless networks aren't the answer either: batteries have to be regularly replaced or changed, and what they add to the device's size and weight might be disproportionate for smaller appliances. In Pin&Play, we explore a design space in between typical wired and wireless networks, investigating the use of surfaces to network objects that are attached to it. This article gives an overview of the network model, and describes functioning prototypes that were built as a proof of concept.

  • Transepidermal water loss in developing rats : Role of aquaporins in the immature skin
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Research. - 0031-3998 .- 1530-0447. ; 53:4, s. 558-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the extremely preterm infant, high transepidermal water loss (TEWL) can result in severe dehydration. TEWL has been attributed to the structural properties of the epidermis but might also be influenced by mechanisms that facilitate water transport. To investigate whether aquaporins (AQP) may be involved in the extreme losses of water through immature skin, we examined the presence and cellular distributions of AQP-1 and AQP-3 in embryonic and adult rat skin by immunohistochemistry. The expression of AQP mRNA in skin was analyzed with the use of semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR. In rat pups of different embryonic (E) and postnatal (P) ages (days), TEWL and skin hydration were measured. AQP-1 was detected in dermal capillaries, and AQP-3 was abundant in basal epidermal layers. Both AQP displayed several times higher expression in embryonic than in adult skin. TEWL was highest at embryonic day 18 (E18) (133 +/- 18 g/m2h) and lower at E20 (25 +/- 1 g/m2h) and P4 (9 +/- 2 g/m2h). Skin hydration measured as skin electrical capacitance paralleled TEWL, being highest in fetal skin (794 +/- 15 pF at E18) and decreasing to 109 +/- 11 pF at E20 and to 0 +/- 0 pF at P4. We conclude that, as in infants, water loss through the skin of rats decreases markedly with maturation during the perinatal period. The expression and cellular localization of the AQP are such that they might influence skin hydration and water transport and contribute to the high losses of water through the immature skin.
