  • Constraints on Very High Energy Emission from GRB 130427A
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 795:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z = 0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB 130427A ~71 ks (~20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB 130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst.

  • Confirmed hypertension and plasma 25(OH)D concentrations amongst elderly men
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 269:2, s. 211-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives. The results of experimental studies suggest that vitamin D deficiency activates the renin-angiotensin system and predisposes to hypertension. Results of previous epidemiological studies investigating the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status and hypertension have not been consistent, perhaps because of their sole reliance on office blood pressure (BP) measurements leading to some misclassification of hypertension status. No previous studies have examined the association between 25(OH)D status and confirmed hypertension assessed with both office and 24-h BP measurements. Design. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated 833 Caucasian men, aged 71 +/- 0.6 years, to determine the association between plasma 25(OH)D concentrations, measured with high-pressure liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, and the prevalence of hypertension. We used both supine office and 24-h BP measurements for classifying participants as normotensive or confirmed hypertensive; participants with inconsistent classifications were excluded. Results. In a multivariable adjusted logistic regression model, men with 25(OH)D concentrations < 37.5 nmol L-1 had a 3-fold higher prevalence of confirmed hypertension compared to those with >= 37.5 nmol L-1 25(OH)D (odds ratio = 3.3, 95% CI: 1.0-11.0). Conclusions. Our results show that low plasma 25(OH)D concentration is associated with a higher prevalence of confirmed hypertension.

  • Effect of parental migration background on childhood nutrition, physical activity, and body mass index
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of obesity. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2090-0716 .- 2090-0708. ; 2014, s. 406529-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, and obesity in children have important public health implications but, to date, their effects have not been studied in the growing population of children in Sweden with immigrant parents.Methods. We estimated the association between parental migration background and nutrition, physical activity, and weight in 8-year-old children born in Stockholm between 1994 and 1996 of immigrants and Swedish parents (n=2589). Data were collected through clinical examination and questionnaires filled out by parents. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using multivariable logistic regression.Results. Children of immigrants complied more closely with Nordic Nutrition Recommendations compared with those of Swedes (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.11–1.64). They had higher intake of dietary fibre, vitamins C, B6, and E, folic acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) reflecting higher consumption of foods of plant origin, but lower intake of vitamins A and D, calcium, and iron reflecting lower consumption of dairy products. Children of immigrants had higher intake of sucrose reflecting higher consumption of sugar and sweets. Furthermore, these children had a higher risk of having low physical activity (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.06–1.62) and being overweight (OR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.06–1.65) compared with children of Swedish parents. The odds of having low physical activity and being overweight were even higher in children whose parents were both immigrants. A low level of parental education was associated with increased risk of low physical activity regardless of immigration background.Conclusions. Culturally appropriate tools to capture the diverse range of ethnic foods and other lifestyle habits are needed. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the low levels of physical activity, increased weight, and lack of consumption of some important vitamins among children of immigrants.

  • A novel bone conduction implant (BCI): engineering aspects and pre-clinical studies.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of audiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1499-2027 .- 1708-8186. ; 49:3, s. 203-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Percutaneous bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) are today an important rehabilitation alternative for patients suffering from conductive or mixed hearing loss. Despite their success they are associated with drawbacks such as skin infections, accidental or spontaneous loss of the bone implant, and patient refusal for treatment due to stigma. A novel bone conduction implant (BCI) system has been proposed as an alternative to the BAHA system because it leaves the skin intact. Such a BCI system has now been developed and the encapsulated transducer uses a non-screw attachment to a hollow recess of the lateral portion of the temporal bone. The aim of this study is to describe the basic engineering principals and some preclinical results obtained with the new BCI system. Laser Doppler vibrometer measurements on three cadaver heads show that the new BCI system produces 0-10 dB higher maximum output acceleration level at the ipsilateral promontory relative to conventional ear-level BAHA at speech frequencies. At the contralateral promontory the maximum output acceleration level was considerably lower for the BCI than for the BAHA.

  • Ivory: Socio-ecological consequences of the east african ivory trade

  • Ingår i: Ecology and Power : Struggles over Land and Material Resources in the Past, Present and Future. - : Routledge. - 9780415601467 ; :18, s. 124-142
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pastoralist populations in East Africa appear in the archaeological record 4,000–4,500 years ago, and specialized pastoralism has occurred and disappeared at different times and places over the last two or three millennia (Gifford-Gonzales 1998). While these geographically widespread pastoral societies have received much scholarly attention from a variety of disciplines, the prevailing interpretation of the long history of this socio-ecological specialization focuses on local and/or regional economic and ecological conditions. Yet, the emergence, maintenance, and spread of this form of livelihood as a productive specialization must be explained and not taken for granted. In the literature on East Africa, authors often view pastoralism as an unproblematic consequence of favorable environmental conditions and herd growth (e.g., Spencer 1998: 2–3; Marshall 1990; Schneider 1979). I argue here, like Henrichsen (2000), that pastoralism must be analyzed not as a given natural condition but as a result of wealth accumulation, which is historically constructed in contexts of social and economic world-system linkages. Furthermore, I argue that while instances of pastoralism may have occurred as local developments in time and space, the periods of widespread geographical and demographic expansions and contractions of pastoralist societies during the last millennium are linked to the global trade in ivory, and thus to the world-system.

  • Use of intrathecal chemoprophylaxis in children after SCT and the risk of central nervous system relapse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Bone Marrow Transplantation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0268-3369 .- 1476-5365. ; 46:3, s. 372-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflicting conclusions can be drawn from the available data concerning antileukemic efficacy and risks of intrathecal (i.t.) chemoprophylaxis to children after hematopoietic SCT (HSCT). To address this, we enrolled six transplantation centers with similar treatment and patient material. Of the 397 children included, 136 patients had received post-HSCT i.t. treatment (i.t. group) and 261 had not (non-i.t. group). The two groups were, apart from the i.t. therapy given or not given, at equal risk of post-HSCT central nervous system (CNS) relapse, which was the primary endpoint studied. Isolated CNS relapses were observed in 2 (1.5%) patients from the i.t. group and 2 (1%) from the non-i.t. group. Combined relapses, including CNS, involved 4 (3%) patients from the i.t. group and 6 (2%) from the non-i.t. group. Overall survival and the occurrence of neurological side effects did not differ significantly between the groups. There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of isolated or mixed CNS relapses between the two groups, suggesting little or no benefit from i.t. therapy post-HSCT in children.
