Immunologic responses following administration of a vaccine targeting human papillomavirus Types 6, 11, 16, and 18

- Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection causes cervical cancer and genital warts. Young women (1106) were randomized to receive one of three formulations of a quadrivalent HPV (Types 6/11/16/18) L1 virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine or one of two placebo formulations. The goal was to assess vaccine safety and immunogenicity in baseline HPV 6/11/16 or 18-naive and previously infected subjects. All three formulations were highly immunogenic. At Month 2 (postdose 1), among women with vaccine-type antibodies at baseline, vaccine-induced anti-HPV responses were similar to 12- to 26-fold higher than those observed in baseline-naive women, suggesting an anamnestic response. Following an initial, similar sized decline, anti-HPV responses plateaued and remained stable through end-of-study (3.0 years). No vaccine-related serious adverse experiences were reported. Digital scoring of haemophilic arthropathy using radiographs is feasible

- Radiographs are important tools to evaluate structural changes in many Joint diseases. In the case of haemophilic arthropathy (HA), the Pettersson score is widely used. The rising of digital radiography enables evaluation of these changes in a more quantitative and detailed manner, potentially improving diagnosis and follow-up. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether digital image analysis ill the case of HA is feasible, using a presently available method for radiographic changes in knee osteoarthritis (OA), knee image digital analysis (KIDA). Sixty-two knee radiographs were scored according to Pettersson and with KIDA, each by two independent observers. Inter-observer variation and correlations between the two scoring methods were determined. The inter-observer variation was smaller for KIDA than for Pettersson and for KIDA not significantly different from evaluation of OA joints. Good correlations were found for the two methods where comparison of parameters was appropriate. Importantly, for each of the parameters within one point in the ordinal Pettersson score, a large window still existed in the continuous KIDA grading. Digital analysis of radiographs to quantify joint damage in HA is feasible. The use of continuous variables, as used in a digital method Such as KIDA has the advantage that it enables objective and much more sensitive detection of small changes than by use of an ordinal analogue method Such as the Pettersson score. Based oil the present results, it would be worthwhile to adapt the KIDA method for the specific characteristics of HA and to extend the method to elbow and ankle radiographs.

- In the search for new spintronic materials with high spin polarization at room temperature, we have synthesized an osmium-based double perovskite with a Curie temperature of 725 K. Our combined experimental results confirm the existence of a sizable induced magnetic moment at the Os site, supported by band-structure calculations, in agreement with a proposed kinetic-energy-driven mechanism of ferrimagnetism in these compounds. The intriguing property of Sr2 CrOs O6 is that it is at the end point of a metal-insulator transition due to 5d band filling and at the same time ferrimagnetism and high-spin polarization are preserved.

- The use of jump control technique provides efficient and secure ways for generating key-stream for stream ciphers. This design approach was recently implemented in some algorithms submitted to eSTREAM, the ECRYPT Stream Cipher Project. However, inappropriately chosen parameters for jumping constructions can completely undermine their security. In this paper we describe a new inherent property of jump registers that allows to construct linear relations in their output. We illustrate our results by building a key-recovery attack on the Pomaranch stream cipher. We also suggest a slight modification to the jump register configuration in Pomaranch that allows to protect against this type of attacks.
