  • Wenlock metabentonites from Gotland, Sweden: geochemistry, sources and potential as chemostratigraphic markers
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Geological Magazine. - 0016-7568. ; 136:6, s. 661-669
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two metabentonite suites occur within the Wenlock limestones and marls of Gotland, one within the Slite Formation (M. belophorus to the C. ellesae biozones) and the other in the Mulde Formation (G. nassaM. dubius Biozone). Their geochemical characteristics based on rare-earth element (REE) distributions in apatite crystals separated from the metabentonites suggest origins from three separate volcanic sources. One of these sources has an alkaline affinity, reflected in relatively high levels of Th, Nb and Zr, which suggests that it may have lain over thickening continental crust during the waning stages of the closure of the Tornquist Sea, while the other two represent calc-alkaline magmas. The source of the volcanic ash is placed some 400 km to the southwest of Gotland, on the TornquistTeysseyre Zone, which is the northernmost expression of the Trans-European Suture Zone. Distinctive differences in REE distribution in apatite from these metabentonites should assist in future correlation studies in Wenlock stratigraphy, both within the Baltic region and further afield.

  • Screening of some European medicinal plants for spasmolytic activity on isolated guinea-pig trachea
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pharmacognosy. - 0925-1618. ; 33:4, s. 356-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eight European plants, used traditionally against diseases of the respiratory system, have been assayed for in vitro spasmolytic activity on guinea-pig trachea. The plants were collected or cultivated in the south of Sweden, and both water and 67% methanol extracts of the parts reported to be used in the traditional medicine were prepared and assayed. Five of the species did not show any significant activity at concentrations up to 0.6 mg extract per ml organ bath, the methanol extracts of 2 species (Glechoma hederacea and Hyssopus officinale) showed weak activity, while 0.6 mg/ml of the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Artemisia abrotanum relaxed the tone induced by 0.1 μmol/l carbachol almost (80%) as effectively as 2.2 mmol/l terbutaline.

  • The frequency and severity of retinopathy are related to HbA(1c) values after, but not at, the diagnosis of NIDDM
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 244:2, s. 149-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives. To examine the relationship between previous glycaemic exposure and prevalence of retinopathy 8 years after diagnosis of diabetes in 58 islet cell antibodies (ICA)-negative noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients and in a group of 14 ICA-positive 'NIDDM' and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients. Design and methods. The Wisconsin retinopathy scale was used to assess the retinopathy which was graded into mild, moderate and severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), or proliferative retinopathy (PDR). The frequency and severity of retinopathy was related to HbA(1c) levels at diagnosis, and 3 and 5 years later. Results. Thirty of the 58 ICA-negative NIDDM patients (52%) but only 2 of the 14 ICA-positive 'NIDDM' or IDDM patients (14%) had mild-moderate- severe NPDR 8 years after diagnosis (P = 0.02). None had PDR. Retinopathy 8 years after diagnosis in NIDDM (= 58 ICA-negative patients) was correlated with the degree of glycaemiC control (HbA(1c) levels) at 3 and 5 years after diagnosis, but not to HbA(1c) levels at diagnosis. The relative risk for a higher average HbA(1c) (per percentage) at 3 and 5 years was 1.56 for any retinopathy vs. no retinopathy (95% confidence interval 1.1-2.2; P = 0.01) and 1.68 for moderate to severe NPDR in comparison with no DR and mild NPDR (95% confidence interval 1.0-2.8; P = 0.04). Conclusions. Retinopathy after 8 years of diabetes in NIDDM patients was associated with impaired glycaemic control during previous years but not with glycaemic control at baseline. Good glycaemic control may prevent retinopathy in patients with NIDDM.

  • Survival of Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 9843 (299v), and effect on the short-chain fatty acid content of faeces after ingestion of a rose-hip drink with fermented oats
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Food Microbiology. - 0168-1605. ; 42:1-2, s. 29-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a controlled and randomised double-blind study, 26 healthy adult volunteers consumed, for 21 d, 400 ml of a rose-hip drink containing oats (0.7 g/100ml) fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 9843 (RHL; containing 5 x 10(7) cfu ml(-1)), and 22 volunteers in a second group the same amount of a pure rose-hip drink (RH). Significant increases in the total faecal concentration of carboxylic acids (P < 0.05 after 1 week and P < 0.01 after 3 weeks of intake), acetic acid (P < 0.01 after 3 weeks of intake) and propionic acid (P < 0.01 after 3 weeks of intake and P < 0.05 eight days after intake ceased) were recorded in the RHL group, indicating increased fermentation in the colon. In both groups a significant increase was obtained in the concentration of faecal lactic acid (P < 0.001 after 1 and 3 weeks of intake). No changes were seen in the concentration of faecal butyrate. The numbers of faecal bifidobacteria and lactobacilli increased significantly in both groups after 3 weeks of intake. Sulphite-reducing clostridia rapidly decreased in the group receiving the product with Lb. plantarum DSM 9843 after 1 week of intake, and then also in the pure rose-hip group after 3 weeks of intake. No changes were seen in the numbers of total anaerobes, gram-negative anaerobes or total aerobes during administration. Lb. plantarum DSM 9843 was recovered in faeces from all volunteers in the RHL group. Median amounts were 7.0 (5.0-8.8) log10 cfu g(-1) after one week of intake, and 6.7 (5.0-8.9) log10 cfu g(-1) after 3 weeks, respectively. The strain was still recovered from faeces of five volunteers 8 d after administration ceased (> 4.8 log10 cfu g(-1)). During the period of intake the volunteers in the RHL group experienced a significant increase in stool volume, a significant decrease in flatulence and slightly softer stools. Volunteers in the RH group experienced a slight but significant decrease in stool volume.
